1. very true.. reliability is determined by the number of critical failure points, not by the type of failure (mechanical, electrical, programming etc..) but as a general rule mechanical devices include fewer critical failure points.. adding electronics, and programming to them (very nearly) doubles the critical failures at each level.. a helmet (for example) has 1 (possibly 2 if you count the closure system) critical failures ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
2. having been through St L. quite often i'm always in awe of the arch... thanks for the info.. something else to remember next time i pass by...but i second Tom's suggestion... definitely worth remembering, but his actual fatality had very little to do with BASE.. my vote No. would you include him if he were simply planning to land on and slide down? does someone who dies on a climb up to a BASE exit count? how about a car wreck in route to an A? just my .02.. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
3. Guess he should have thought of that before he hopped on the back of his bike without a helmet...... Given that so many of them didn't think of this before, what is your solution for them? Just let them die? exactly, if you decide to ignore the guidlines offered by civilization you shouldnt reap the benifits unless you have made arrangements for your care (insurance)... maybe after a few hundred graphic illustrations of why not to be stupid people will wise up... then again, maybe they wont..but either way, its about time some form of darwinism was reintroduced into our society... we are that far away from drowning in each others sweat... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
4. its a complete shit weapon... my additional duty at my first assignment was as the company armorer (was WAAAY better than driving the bus) we had a few M9's with less than 600 rounds fired, that were woefully inaccurate at any range... they were damn near indirect fire weapons.. was fun to give the worst ones to the LTs who thought they were hot shit... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
5. well if yea gotta go..... the last one nearly killed me.... and i still cant stop flying towards the flame.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
6. Bansky qualifies as a 'performance artist' more than a visual artist in many ways... the point isnt nessesarily about the art work (which none the less is very good) but instead about the statement made and the manner in which he does it... i've been a big fan of his graffiti efforts for a while... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
7. Yes I am aware of that. The statement stands though. Not everything that works on a small scale can be transposed to a big scale. You can't agree with that? absolutely... now what evidence do you have to support your proposition that THIS specific issue would not scale? Wrong way around, don't assume a relationship unless you have evidence for it. Did Kennesaw GA have a crime rate like DC before the gun mandate? apples and oranges.. what should be compared is relative crime rates in each locale before and after the change to local gun ownership laws. his conjecture is that the measure in GA would not scale.. What evidence supports that position? now compare that to the evidence that support the assertion that a ban on firearms lowers violent crime rates? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
8. and hence creates a completely ridiculous situation and pointless argument, when crime rates OVERALL are used in a discussion that pretty much only relates to VIOLENT crime and the potential need for defense.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
9. I think you mistake me for someone else. I just asked about "maximum" heartrate. or perhaps he just hit the 'post reply' button to the last post in the thread and provided information relating to the topic?? hmm ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
10. 10,000% sounds like a tax rate I'd vote for if these fucking stoners would shut the fuck up... ok, lets base it on relative harm. Which would mean that (at your scale) alcohol will now be taxed at a 100,000% rate.. so much for cheap beer... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

12. Excuse me??? I normally don't get involved in discussions like this, but who are you to decide what God's motives are? If her situation serves no other purpose but to encourage people to get an Advanced Medical Directives done and that eases the pain and suffering for many familys in the future, then something good came from this. I don't know if this is what we are supposed to learn from this but for you to say it is because God doesn't care is pretty pompous. very simple.. i know what "God" and "His" motives are, the same way his followers do, I read his past actions and statements as accounted in his "one true word". You can read it for yourself.. Perhaps you should, and pay careful attention to the character of “God” and the number of contradictory positions he takes throughout the tale, its quite an enlightening on the actual basis of that particular religion.… apparently her parents were meant to suffer through 12 years of sorrow and emotional agony... one could suppose that will make them better people, and that the lesson is to teach the rest of American society to get their wishes legally documented in writing to prevent the next parental unit slavishly devoted to a particular religious interpretation from keeping your husk alive. But its pretty clear it has instead left them broken, bitter, emotionally, and financially drained while she dies anyway… after dragging them through years of unnecessary torment …... if she had simply died initially, they would have grieved and then already gotten on with their lives...but as the beliefs of their chosen religion contributed to a complete unwillingness to let her go when she was really already gone…. apparently "happiness" isnt included in "God's Plan… hence “God doesn’t care” and some people are meant to suffer. capitalized intentionally... pay attention to details ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
13. are you aware that this argument was once used against democracy?? until it has been tried we cant 'agree' on anything of the sort... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
14. i actually saw a very experienced PST swooper and test pilot do this... he and a team mate were jumping some test canopies and apparently switched bags without unpacking the chute... they were doing clear and pulls and so were first out... that thing opened FAST...looked really painful... we watched him fly around for a bit before he cut it away but there was some discussion as to if he would try to land it backwards... but given his wingloading even with his skill level it would have likely been a very bad idea... some of his teammates were also on the load with him (doing some coaching, I was one of the students) and filmed the exit from the plane... we even watched the video again on the way up to full altitude and everyone had tears in their eyes from laughing ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
15. the early church had this problem.. the heathens were dying just as well when thrown to the lions as the faithful... if dedication as shown by a willingness to die is proof of ‘truth’, then I’d like to point out the scoreboard currently shows that the Muslim extremists (and mind you there are extremists in every religion, so I’m not singling them out) are in the lead... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
16. if you don’t like the games that are played in there then don’t come in it’s not very difficult really…the forum works very well to keep the 'people under the stairs' and the arguments they find entertaining from spilling over into the bonfire and disturbing the "who's ass is hottest?", "i really need some virtual attention" and "how drunk are you?" threads...no one is required to participate or even view what goes on inside, enter of your own free will.... assuming freewill still means anything honestly I’d prefer a ‘virtual waiver’ and have everyone don their flame proof suit at the door, debates would get more lively, more entertaining and we could discuss nearly anything without someone continually whining for moderated protections..… Just my 95.40 ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
17. so whats the real story? is carebear mind candy now the order of the day for off topic forum discussions with other skydivers? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
18. no religion or belief can claim a moratorium on 'spirituality'. Quite clearly (to everyone but her parents and the zealots) her spirit is no longer present. Or would you argue that the things that make her unique from everyone else are still present and trapped inside the husk that reamains? if "God' cared 'He' would have let her body die when her mind did 12 years ago... instead of putting her parents through 12 years of unending grief and sorrow. She's been gone for a long while... but her parents just cant seem to let go because the shell still moves... and that is the saddest part of all... i wonder if the people arguing for the parents have completely missed their statements as to exactly what they would be willing to do to keep her alive... by any and all medical means, including amputation should it become necessary due to her deteriorating condition apparently they’ve lost the capacity to think rationally on the issue of their daughter’s best interests….hope can be terrible thing... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
19. get rid of seat belt laws as well... its your life, risk it in any manner you chose... but i dont believe anyone should be required to pay for your stupidity either.. no insurance? oh well....your stay here wont be to long anyway... every individual should be able to decide what risks they are willing to take, and waive the 'benefits' of civilized society if those risks exceed the consensus... i'm still pissed there are places you cant legally camp over night simply because the cost of a potential rescue is to high... if you walked in, you should walk out.. if you cant...... at least the natives wont go hungry that week... freedom seems to mean less and less every year.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
20. Correction, living in Europe means living in a free minded world. just as long as you dont mind EVERYONE and their brother making sure you arent doing anything they might not approve of... no thanks i've been there, and its a beautiful place, but the people and governments get into each other's business and personal lives FAR to much for my taste... unfortunately its happening here as well... and there arent any more continents to emigrate too... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
21. or they could train their kids what it is, how to use it, and basic discipline and respect in the first place... there has been a gun on my parent's headboard as long as i can remember... it was there so that my sister and I have access to it should the need arise as well.. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
22. We're in the current mess, IIRC because he listened to his advisers, not because he didn't. not quite. we are in this current mess (and in itlargely alone and paying for it all) because he listened ONLY to those advisors who agreed with his agenda, and blatantly and publicly ignored and derided the military experts who's estimates and predictions have since proven to be 100% accurate. Bush's record clearly shows he makes a decision, THEN looks for evidence to support them... a piss poor way to lead... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

24. the key word there is "director" not writer... Ran is one of the best interpretations of Lear ever, and certainly on of the very best screen versons... but a live performace with good actors will always trump a 2D screen projection IMO ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
