First rig advice - Wings with a 145 Safire
ianmdrennan replied to lintern's topic in Gear and Rigging
I've seen an instructor with 3 identical looking rigs (2 with Vengence 150's and 1 with a Velo 103) accidently give the 103 to a jumper looking to jump the 150. Scary part is that the jumper was experienced enough (200+ jumps) to be able to tell the difference between a 150, etc but had NO FRIGGIN IDEA that he had a small x-brace above his head. Guess he never looked up . He did land it just fine though. Glad he never made any turns low to the ground. There was also a case where a studen in Deland took a 96 for a spin because the rig has the same colorings as their student gear (or something like that). It happens, just fortunately not a lot Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -

Hey Chuck, Can't remember them all off my head and some may be a place or 2 wrong (hopefully Chris will post the complete list). Here's the top 10 as I remember them. There were about 23 competitors I believe. 1st - Ian Bobo 2nd - Junior (from Deland) 3rd - Mark Schimmle 4th - Paul Roussouw 5th - dunno 6th - Brian McNenney 7th - Ray Dutch (I think) 8th - Ian Drennan 9th - Greg Compton 10th - Chris Hayes They changed the scoring system for this meet so that intermediate and advanced were scored directly against one another. The format works well as now the ONLY difference is that intermediates have to hit the 10ft gates and advanced have the 5ft gates. Overall it seems to have done a much better job at making sure an intermediate can't dominate the overall score because of good rounds against other intermediates. Good job to Chris and the team for improving the scoring system. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -

Hey Jason! Was great having you out there dude. Congrats on your first meet, you did great!. These comps are just spectacular for spending time around some really good competitors who are good people and love sharing advice. It's a wonderful learning environment so we hope to see you there more -
Hey Bella, Sure, if you're paying !! I'd love to go but the Florida Swoop League is chewing away all my funds this season (and it's been great so far!). Hopefully next year I'll be ready to come and play with the big boys on the PST! Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Hey Bella, Please don't get me wrong, my thoughts on the DVD don't reflect my opinions of the team or their capabilities as canopy pilots. I've been lucky enough to meet and talk to everyone but Heath and watch them all in action on the screen and in real life. They are unquestionably top notch, helpful and inspirational folks with amazing piloting skills. My thoughts on the dvd were as a consumer comparing it with what's currently available for entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. It's never pleasant hearing someone say something negative about something that somebody put time and effort into, but I felt as a consumer of the product I should share my opinion of it (right or wrong). The idea was that maybe if there were others out there who felt the same way, the people involved would take those opinions into consideration when taking on their next production. Guess there's not much more I can really say. Sorry Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Hey Brains, Please post what you thought of the vid when you're done watching it. Hopefully my thoughts won't swing you in a direction, I'm interested to see what other peoples "untainted" opinions are

"The Parachute and its Pilot" Book
ianmdrennan replied to BrianSGermain's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Yeah I got mine in under 3 weeks. I still want to read it one more time before putting out my thoughts. I did enjoy it, I'll say that much so far. Did the check go through? Also I'd suggest contacting Brian directly. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -
Yeah, practice turning and "saving yourself" (yank a front riser up high and after 180 degrees get on the toggles like your life depends on it). Make sure you take note of how the canopy responds and just how high the toggle pressure is. Other than that, as suggested by others, take a canopy course and always, always consult your local instructors. EDIT: I see you jump @ ASC. You have a great resource Nate Gilbert there, as well as Dave Hebert and Hans Paulsen at "The Farm" just down the road. Don't be shy to use those resources. They're all good, approachable people. Hi Dominik, I got the dvd today and have watched it twice trying to come up with some sort of a review, so here goes... As a PD fan, and customer, I've come to expect superior products and service from them and have never been let down....till now. The service I received from PD was still superior and prompt, but I'm afraid the product falls flat. The total running time of the "movie" is 12 mins 30 secs. The "movies" footage was good, but the editing and music choice (basically 1 song for the entire 12 mins) left me feeling bored after the first 5 mins. I think this is largly due to the monotonous techno track that left me feeling like my cd player was skipping to the beginning of the same track over and over again. There are nice bonus features like interviews with the team members, which were interesting to watch; a gallery;and 3 different promos for the dvd. Personally I liked the promo's better than the "movie". The first 2, available on PD's site for free, felt well put together and that they had the editors "heart" in them. The 3rd was pretty good as well but not as exciting as the prior 2. Interestingly enough the combined time of the 3 promos was almost as long as the "movie". All in all I have to say that I MUCH prefered "Out Of The Blue" and the "PST 2003" dvd. I believe this is PD's first DVD and I remember Icarus taking a bit of heat for their overediting style in "Out Of The Blue" and toning it down in their next endevour to a well produced "PST 2003" dvd. I believe PD will do better next time, I KNOW they are capable of it. Flame on Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

dual front risers or just one
ianmdrennan replied to flyingarab's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Hi Jeff, While it initially seems like a good idea, it's actually quite inefficient. Remember the less distortion of the wing the better, not to mention you're now also going against momentum by changing the wing direction. Jim Slaton had a good tip on not forcing a bad situation. You can recover some of the excessive altitude by using both fronts, but I'd advise against counter rotating, not only for loss of performance but also traffic consideration factors. The best approach would be continuously evaluating your altitude as you did the turn and extending or shortening the turn speed to keep you in the correct altitude for that part of the turn. Sometimes we're just too high. Better to go and try again than force a situation. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team
