Our soldiers put themselves in a lot of risky situations on our behalf. I'm just glad someone thought up that system. I think that when the Jumpmaster decides to use it that they try to determine just how securely entangled the jumper is. And I don't even know what the state of the jumper's consciousness or unconsciousness has to do with that decision. I'm thinking that they evaluated the risks to that option and decided they were greater. If one of the parachutes inflated just as they got him back up to the door, it could maybe entangle with the tail. Scary stuff. Makes skydiving look tame sometimes. AFAIK the US military doesn't use one of these systems. If you're knocked out, they will attempt to pull you back into the plane, if you're awake, you just keep your nice tight body position (that you were holding since you exited, right?) and as soon as you feel yourself drop (they cut your static line), you activate your reserve. Both ways sound sketchy, but Im sure it beats landing with the plane. I never said it was a bad thing, only that, according to the USPA's numbers, most of the fatalities have been by people with 400+ jumps. Since a "D" requires (at least) 500 jumps, I submit that making advanced canopy flight a "D" license prerequisite is the way to go. What do you consider advanced? What does the USPA consider advanced? (going by median jump numbers) with the means showing it happening much more to higher jump numbers. Just make sure you're current enough to downsize before you get the hair up your ass to jump it. IIRC, many landing injuries are due to jumpers knocking the dust off come spring (mostly in the northern states) and not being current enough to jump the rig they were used to several months ago. Throwing a downsize in the mix is a bad idea. There is only 2 wires on the power cable at the DC end. Positive and negative (7.3 volts or something like that) Just solder the DC plug and jack so that the wire with the white strip is the same on both sides. (IE center/pin is white stripe, outside/shield is the black wire) It is an extremely simple modification to do, just don't reverse the wires. Its far better to test with a voltmeter before and after on the plug, so you know which side is positive and negative, and once you're done, test it again to confirm it. Then put heatshrink over the wires (individually) to ensure that they don't bend and short out. Mine works like a champ!
