Bush says bible probably not literally true
Rstanley0312 replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
Is your church anything like THIS ONE? > Today. Drudge JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A divorced Jacksonville woman said her former church has threatened to "go public with her sins" and tell the congregation about her sexual relationship with her new boyfriend. Um..... no! This is what I am talking about. Muslim does not = terrorist and Christian does not = this craziness! Rstanley0312 replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
My original question was this - if only parts of the Bible are true (which has been stated by Bush, and I think by you), and everyone gets to decide for themselves which parts are true, doesn't that undermine the credibility of the entire religion? A religion which bases it's entire foundation on this supposedly historical book that seems to change a lot? No... I think it is all true but you cannot defend faith with fact otherwise it would not be faith! I am just stating that the historical events in the Bible cannot be ignored as many of them have been proven true. Again, I believe it is all true. I have no doubt that will change again and possibly soon. I agree both are wrong! I really feel there is a strong hate towards Christianity these days and it may be because I am a Christian. All I know is that no one deserves the ignorant hate that is spewed in our world. Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. Bill.... that totally came out wrong... this is why I need to proof read. What I meant was people get upset when anyone who is muslim is classified that way but so many others are eager to lump in Christians with their crazy counterparts. I am not saying anyone has accused me of that but in general I hear a lot of comments towards Christians that are unjustified. A girl was perfroming in a Christmas play last night at my church and there was a horrible accident and she died. On Cincinnati.com the story is posted and blogs are allowed. Some of the stuff that was said on there was horrible. People attacked my church, Christians in general, etc. when they should be focused on a poor girls death and her family like the church is..... so my comments were a bit fueld by that. I have never felt anyone here attacking me to this degree which is yet another testament to the relationships and diversity of the skydiving community. If you have "faith" in the story, then good for you. But I take exception when you tell me that something is true when it has not been proven. I am telling you anything is true or not. The flood is a divine act but even considering that it is there are many things that are divine and historical that have been proven true i.e. Jericho and its collapsed walls. I know not all of it has been proven true my point is only that the historical context of the Bible is very important. Faith is faith and if yours is different that is fine. I do want to say one thing... it always seems that whenever a Christian is refered to that the most extreme nut case "christians" are the one being used. Like the doomsdayers. Not a knowck on you but why is it that it is so horrible to classify Islam as a bunch of terrorists because that is the extreme sect of the faith but when it is Christianity it seems like it free game and all the insane "christian" are always the ones brought up? Just a question.... Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. Ron, I don't disagree with anything you are saying either and yes "best" is relative. I hate thinking about all of those people that have the gun "just in case" and do not take the time to learn how it shoots or to be properly trained but it is the world we live in. This may sound a little crazy but I also want to be able to kill the guy with the least amount of damage tomy place..... ha :) But I have been shooting my whole life and have had to draw a weapon on someone once. It is just like skydiving in a way.... currency and muscle memory. Oh and an M4 would be a very reliable and solid weapon to use as well.... cheers Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. Quote12 ga shotgun....It is the best HD weapon really. This is something I have always not really agreed with. Don't get me wrong, I have a loaded shotgun in my place but I just think it is a bit slow. I try to think of it like this...... the bad guy could come in when im taking a crap, in bed, in the shower etc..... it is easy to keep a pistol by you and it is fast to draw and crack off several rounds. I do shoot pistols more so I probably am biased and yes it takes more practice but I think if you are willing to put the time in which you should if you are a gun owner than my preference is a pistol. I have my 1911, another .45, and my .38 spread out in my home if needed. JMHO Rob Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. If you haven't fired a weapon in 18 years I'd suggest a pistol for you wife to carry. Sure shotguns are all well and good if you're not spot on target but they are only useful if you have them to hand, are you really going to carry it with you throughout your home? opition. I agree..... I say a .38 snub nose revolver with a crimson grip. I carry a S&W Airweight 5 shot revolver. It is hammerless and if it misfires you just squeeze the trigger again. Learn to shoot it without the laser but a red dot on someone from a gun definitley gets them to stop and think. I think it is almost as effective as chambering a round with a pump shotgun. You are certainly entitled to your belief, but to me, all of the Bible "historians" sound exactly like Chuteless - how many times do you need to revise the story after it's proven false? Please do tell what in the Bible has been proven "false" that is not divine? I do agree that the flood is historical but it is also divine and has never been proven false. as for the NKJV they did correct many of the slanted translations that were done as well as the inaccurate ones. This is not meant to be a dig but how exactly do you know how close our translations are to the original text? Can you read Greek and Hebrew or is this just something that you have been taught or read? Kall how did I know you would have something to add that of course has the intention to mock...... Bill, I like the NJKV but my preference is the NASB which uses the same translation style and is really close to the NJKV just a slightly different language. Chronicles is interesting and you are right... the author wanted to "add" or correct "history". If you look at early translation you will find that one of the two exmples you gave is what was originally written or the earliest we have. With the King James version not only did they get a lot of the translation wrong because the court wanted its own slant on it but they also had a few differences in early manuscripts so in the example you gave they decided to use both..... ah human error..... anyway I believe in the Bible and its over all truth because of my faith but I have no defense against mistakes over time or wrong translations. Faith in what I believe to be the over all truths is what matters to me but any Christian who says there is not content in it to be argued is insane. I believe what really matters has endured. Glad you are cool with that.... I of course believe it is accurate in more ways than that but that is my faith and belief. It is impossible to argue faith with facts. I realize this unlike most Christians. I am saying it is historically accurate though. That really was the only point I was making but everyone wanted to flog the Christian boy....... HA I am kidding of course Blues Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. Bill........... you are missing what I am saying. I think the earth being created in days is "divine" and I don't believe creation is science. I am talking historical accuracy of what has occured after creation like wars, people, cities, major events excluding the divine. I already stated it still comes down to faith and if you don't believe I have no problem with that nor would I ever look at you or anyone else differently for it. It is my faith and it is okay you have yours whatever it may be. I am not preaching nor am i asking anyone to believe in the divine acts in the Bible I am stating I believe but I am also stating the significance of what the Bible has given us in the way of history and archeology. I first response was to someone basically discounting the Bible entirely I am just stating you cannnot do that. Umm. Riiiiigght. You must've been there to witness those goings-on? I will refer you to some basic info about the King James Bible. This, for example: Or maybe you were talking about the Bibles before the Hampton Court Conference. Maybe the Bishop's Bible? Or the Great Bible? The king James version originally was horrible so I agree with you on that account. The translations were a disgrace however the New King James Version has sinced corrected those errors and the slant the court put on the version. As for my quote on histoical accuracy...... the staement is FACT! Take out the divine and focus on the events, wars, etc. and it is proven accurate. It is used every day to find tels to dig at and has never been proven wrong. A majority of historians and archeologists would agree to that point. Don't try and make me out to be a fanatic or something. One of my biggest pet peeves are what I call "stupid Christian"... the ones who preach all of the time and have the stupid bumper stickers on the car that say "in case of rapture this car will be unmanned" but i have a right to my faith and never press it on others. I don't think Christ ever did that so I don't either. What I am stating about the Bible is true though..... again you do not have to believe in it but you can not detract from its historical significance. uh no you should let the language experts tell you. It is not difficult to tell how something is written once you know the language. I read Coine Greek (New Testament), Hebrew (Old Testament) and some Aramaic which some of the Bible is written in (New Testament) I was stating that we have found mistakes made in previous translations the New American Standard just tells you the 2% that is unsure and tell you all the posibilities. By the way that 2% is not entire versus rather individual words. By the way I am not an "expert" but studying the languages since 98' I can tell you it is not that hard to know the intent or what the author was saying despite the argument that it can be translated however one wants to translate it. That simply is not true! You can choose to believe or not but what is written is written. It really is that simple. It should be noted the the Greek and Hebrew languages are way more specific than English. i.e. we have one word for love where Greek and Hebrew have four a piece to define specific loves so you cannot use the same word for love in a phrase like "I love ice cream" and "I love my wife". Different words for each. Blues! Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. Just curious, and I'm asking without intending to offend anyone. But if the Bible is not literally true, does that mean the 10 commandments are really only general guidelines? I mean, isn't it hard to separate what you think might be the word of God (i.e. literally true) from what may just be a parable that shouldn't be taken literally? If everyone is allowed to judge for themselves which parts of the Bible are worth following, and which aren't true, then it seems like the entire foundation of western religion is null and void. It all depends on the book you are reading. If it is written in metaphoric style i.e. Revelation which is apocolyptic literature then it is metaphoric but if it written with literal language then it means what is says like the synoptic gospels excluding the parables which are just that, parables. Just for the record the Bible has not really changed since it was originally written and actually the mistakes in translation have almost been completely eliminated. Where we are unsure, many versions like the New American Standard Bible will tell you where there is confusion and the possible options. That is only 2% of the scriptures. Bottom line though it still comes down to faith even though the Bible still is the most hisorically accurate document ever created. Blues! What are the odds he's going to be proficient at the items on BillVons downsize list? Doing each thing once and crossing it off the list isn't the intention. If his instructor says he's okay with a 150 then maybe he is, for now. He's not going to be ready to get rid of it in 50 jumps either, so I wonder what the instructor has to sell him. He will not be proficient and thaqt is the problem. I spent most of my first 100 jumps under a PD 254 (exit weight of 225) before I downsized and even now I may be doing it too soon. I think people pushing jumpers to downsize too fast is a BIG problem and I hate to hear instructors do so???? A 170 will be fun and plenty for you to handle! I would never be loading above a 1 with a little over 25 jumps. Blues!! Rob Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. Great...... Now that I have read the post I know some stuff that happened on the last episode. I got back from the DZ late last night so it is dvr'd and awaiting my lazy ass to watch it tonight. I am a fan of the show and I hope it does not end early like Deadwood but the way I understand it is Deadwood was so authentic that production costs were through the roof so it became a money burner despite its popularity and how good it was.
