  1. Would you say life becomes less worthwhile as you age? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  2. Do you think things like psychology and sociology will eventually loose their value in society? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  3. Please include a brief description as to why.
  4. Great post! I'd like to come back to this when I have more time (no pun intended ). Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  5. In what way might you just keel over dead at 75? If the process of maintaining such a biological age is realized, wouldn't one who decides "they've seen enough" resume natural aging once they've stopped the process? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  6. Only if the immortality one desires is physical. What about age-defying immortality? One could still be killed today by anything which could kill a person today, except for age. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  7. It's pretty clear what the spiritual believe w/r/t immortality, but the idea is not one limited to the religious. Immortality seems to appeal to a wide-range of people from all walks of life. I don't have any specific question I'm looking to have answered, but rather just wanted to open the topic for discussion. I'm hoping for ethical arguments as well as opinions on desirability (or undesirability). Would you want to "oscillate between being biologically 20 and biologically 25 indefinitely" as gerontologist Aubrey de Grey hopes to achieve? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  8. I saw the second photo on the news this morning. I don't know if the photo I saw on the news was enhanced, but it had a much more vivid contrast of the glowing reflection of the sun and the blackness of the belly of the wave. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  9. But American Idol voters have watched diligently from the get and know who sounds better than the other. Not a good analogy; American Idol is about vocal talent. Actually, American Idol is exactly why a TV contest can be so valuable in our society. I mean, I haven't watched since Kelly Clarkson, but would she have had a chance "to make it" otherwise? I loved her. I cried when she sang "A Moment Like This" in the finale. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  10. My hand would have remained at my side for both X and Z, but I've been known to dabble in Y. And I like House, too. Would that be a considered a Z by definition? I would have to add an additional "N" category for news networks. If you watch any of them, at any time, surely you're very likely to have seen & heard said ads. I DVR the shows I enjoy and fast-forward commercials. I do sometimes enjoy various news networks, though. And I like the first 15 minutes of Ellen.
  11. I agree it would help if it were worded differently... Kant is not suggesting one should "act on the supposition of [God] being real." The passage merely offers a reason why one might choose to believe in God despite lack of scientific evidence He exists. I don't think it's a "stupid" reason as JackC asserted. Kant believed our sense of morality is not God-given. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  12. I think there is a difference between accepting something as true and believing it to probably be true. Faith is not mutually exclusive from doubt. "If one cannot prove that a thing is, he may try to prove that it is not. And if he succeeds in doing neither (as often occurs), he may still ask whether it is in his interest to accept one or the other of the alternatives hypothetically, from the theoretical or the practical point of view. Hence the question no longer is as to whether perpetual peace is a real thing or not a real thing, or as to whether we may not be deceiving ourselves when we adopt the former alternative, but we must act on the supposition of its being real." ~ Immanuel Kant Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  13. My apologies for that assumption... This premise never occurred to me. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  14. Not really. But FWIW, I was offering Palin's perspective in a thread overwhelmingly bashing her. I have some earlier posts in this thread you might be interested in reading for clarification (pages two & three). Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  15. I think our famlies would get along just fine. For us, it's always been about the vino and the laughs on Christmas Day. The presents stopped when I graduated high school (they gradually decreased through high school)--and it's been even more fun ever since. The only "gifts" we bring now are really hilarious, ridiculous things that provide a ton of entertainment. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  16. "She also denied a report that she didn't know Africa was a continent, not a country, and that she didn't know the members of the North American Free Trade Agreement" Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  17. I agree! Going sans gift was the best thing we did for one another in so many ways. It was SO much more fun the first Christmas we just got together and so on. I mean, with kids, it's different. Beyond that, it's so sad to cheapen what the occasion really is about. I'm biased a bit because my father once told me--not too long after I started supporting myself--something along the lines of not buying him shit if I hadn't paid my bills and put money into savings else he'd be greatly disappointed. He said it with more charisma & wisdom than I just did. I understood the message and still do.
  18. Here are some of my favorites: Wine. Ma favorite. Wild Animalopoly I personally love handcrafted glass and original art. Not suitable for everyone--I understand--but still a (beautiful-to-me) idea worth mentioning. Really cool organization!
  19. Fair enough. Just be sure to keep the box out of Fido's reach. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  20. That reminds me of Bill's Tita (SO cute!)--before she passed--she always just gave him a nice, thick pair of socks with a piece of candy and a wad of cash stuffed inside them. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
