The Economic Fallout Has Decimated the Black Middle Class
PLFXpert replied to dreamdancer's topic in Speakers Corner
I do not know they are equal, but I find truth in the answer I gave to your question (even though it was not to me). See this is where it gets foggy. I believe a lot more people are concerned about their pocketbooks if the crime is not personal (i.e. not their spouse who was murdered or their child who was raped). And if poverty equates a reason for crime as vortex mentioned, then would there not be less crime if some of the more fortunate were not "stealing" from the less fortunate. It trickles down. (Also, I would never included "rape" as a mostly black crime--unless I misunderstood you.) Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

Agree with your statements thus far, but to play devil's advocate: Because a lot of white crime is less visible. I.e. not literally being carried out in the streets but in the privacy of their own homes and offices without witnesses or loud disturbances. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -
So, my beloved mutt goes to daycare once or twice a week where he can play all day with other dogs in the inside/outside doggie playground. This time, when we picked him up, the daycare lady said he got a flea. Here it is: Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

You ain't fibbing, cowboy. "Ain't" is a word and it ain't no longer excluded from the dictionary. I go by Merriam-Webster circa 1980-something. It is my first dictionary as part of a special Costco trichotomy featuring a dictionary, a thesaurus and something else (I forget what--never used it). My dictionary has my name written inside it in my own beginner's handwriting and resides forthwith in such a locus where I can consult it for big words transcribed in my fashion magazines such as "coquettish" and "haute". Do kitties catch mice? In all seriousness--if I had never considered the situation before and had time to think about it--I truly believe my instinct would be to save my furry baby and much for the same reasons Chaoskitty described: my responsibility, my job to protect, super-cute. Excluding the last reason, the first two for me are instinctual. I am the alpha. My animals look to me for everything. My cats even come when called. Sabre is now nine years old--I nursed him with mother's milk from a syringe at two weeks when he was abandoned and separated from mama cat. Just after he was a year old, the place we were renting was treated for bug control. An hour after the bug guy left, Sabre jumped in my lap and buried his head and moaned. Cats normally hide when they are hurting. Sabre jumped in my lap and told me he didn't feel well. I don't care what anyone says, my cat told me he needed help. The emergency vet said had I been to see him much later, Sabre would have died. I realize it is silly to some, but for me it is a very tough question to answer without doubt. Yours is a good point--hindsight being 20/20. Had one never considered the hypothetical queried and was--in fact--in such a situation I think then Kitty makes a good point as well (no pun intended. ). Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

Awesome!

RL! Great to hear from you.

It makes sense to me. I get a rush from anything I find myself smiling ear-to-ear for a period of time and then laughing uncontrollably afterward. It doesn't have to be anything particularly "scary" or "death-defying". It is simply exciting. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

Bill, you are a pet owner? Honest question. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

I thought of that, too, of course. That is the problem with a simple hypothetical--everyone wants to beat the question. One can not expect any straight-forward answer without a lengthy disclaimer attached to the question. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

This is true for me, as well.

Nothing that I know of; they were just not in the proper position... See, I tend to think my instinct would be toward my love, my baby (my furry, precious angels). Seeing a panicked, human face, however, might strike my emotion; it would under other circumstances not involving my beloved fur-balls--I always help. So, I don't know. I am a few mango-mimosas into my Saturday evening. I will have to get back to this tomorrow. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

On one hand (probably not one of yours ) I agree. On the other, I view the question as not a matter of love for a pet, but more of one of value of life. You say instinct says save the stranger; emotion says save the pet. I say that is debatable. But, let's say you are correct. Which do you think might/likely will generally rule out the other in a life or death situation? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

So human life comes first, unless the person stole your plasma TV. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

I wish I had thought initially to make this a poll. I think more people answer honestly with anonymity. If it is possible for a mod to make this a poll (options: Pet, Stranger, Depends) that would be terrific.

If a situation arose in which you must choose between saving the life of your pet or the life of a stranger, whom would you rescue and why? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

OK, so for me I draw the line here. Am I the only one who finds TVs & DVD systems in cars, silly? My best friend (my baby-godson's mama) does not have such a system in her Mercedes. She did mention having to sing "eee-yi, eee-yi oh" most of the way home from visiting us, though. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

I do not have the knowledge to know if kallend is being over-charged or not, but I would tend to agree with your assessment. Unfortunately, auto tune & repair shops are notorious for taking advantage of customers. I admit, it is worth my weight in gold having a close friend in the car industry. His guys have always taken care of my cars for free and I know they are doing an amazing job. My hunny is a contractor and I often hear him on the phone going over estimates with skeptical prospects. I always play devil's advocate when he gets frustrated, because while I know he is charging them fairly for exceptional work, even my jaw drops when he describes to me what the customer wants and his price. I am very happy not to be in his shoes dealing with all he deals with as a business owner with a product that everyone wants to pay someone to do rather than learn about/do themselves but no-one wants to pay more than their own unknowing/unwilling estimate pulled from thin air. What does ownership means in the digital era?
PLFXpert replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
If you created a digital copy by scanning your book and made such a copy available for sale--while the "third party outlet", aka the retailer, would not have the right--I would not go as far as to say "no one would have the right to just come on in and seize those items from me". I agree Amazon could have handled the situation better, but I really do not see the big deal. Per the NYTimes article, the engineer will not buy another Kindle if his breaks. Well, that's silly. I guess he does not expect new, convenient options to have a learning curve and/or bumps in the road to make a better product. The British technology officer is frustrated because he is confused he has lost some right to his download? That's weird. The student did not have any sort of backup for a class assignment and relied on a new device as the end all/be all for "his work"? It's a "summer assignment", silly--you have all summer to do it over and learn from your mistake. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -
I concur with hiring your own realtor, but just for a go-see I would say calling the buyer's realtor is fine. I like open houses, or just seeing if the back door has been accidentally left open; they are less formal. I have to second this. One thing I love to do is drive by after a hard storm, during the late evening, etc. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

No problems at all! I should note, we have yet to use the automatic function. Thus far, we manually start the cleaning cycle when needed. The Genie comes with a guide with tips on how to acclimate your cats to their new "litter box". Since we were moving their usual location altogether, we first put their old litter box in the new location for about a week. When we caught them using it, we gave them treats next to their box immediately afterward. The cats did not seem to mind the new location and took to it right away. Once we switched to the Genie it took several days before our cats used it. This was not a huge concern as both our cats spend an hour or so a day outside. Sabre stays in the backyard and has never once attempted to jump the fence or leave. Zoe' never goes farther than the neighbor's house. A rainy 5th day resulted in the kitties missing their outside time and by Noon both cats had used the Genie.

Oh em gee, a thermos!!! I had a matching one. I also had a glow worm and several Jabberwockies whose eyes lit up when I squeezed them.
