  1. Yes, enjoy. It is amazing how fast time passes. I remember having a spot of grass in my yard that would not grow because it was where the kids played. I remember thinking that in a few years, I will be able to grow grass. That day came. I remember looking at the nice grass a few years later and wishing it was bare again. That was 20 years ago. Ed
  2. The helmet camera setup is indeed awesome. I am buying Zak's old FFX. It is the one that the camera installs from the inside. (PITB right?) I had an opportunity to jump with Arvel Sunday and do video while he was videoing a tandem. What is even more awesome is to watch him working the tandem with that setup. His pictures are truely professional. He is good at what he does!! Ed
  3. The classifieds here and at Enclave have always worked for me. If the price is right, it will sell, so cut the price before the gear gets any older. Ed
  4. I have been playing with my new PC 109 and my IP-5. I found that while I cannot firewire between them, I can use the S Video cable that came with the IP-5 and S Video between them. the quality is quite good, but, I expect, not as good as firewire. That leaves two reasons for my change over. Most important is digital editing on the computer and of some importance is the lack of a lanc port. Ed
  5. I am not an instructor and I do not advocate teaching students in this way. However, what you saw on the tape is essentially my personal procedure. I believe it would be to your benefit to do some more practice pulls in freefall. Instead of bringing one or both arms in, bring your right hand to the cutaway handle or reserve handle and at the same time, bring your left hand over your head. You will find you can fall with stability through an entire skydive in this position. Another point. You will likely do exactly what you practice. Most are taught to "look red, grab red, look silver, grab silver, pull red, pull silver". I have seen too many who had difficulty with the "pull red" part because of the strength of the velcro. I have added to my thought process and pull practice to instead, add in "peel red" just before "pull red". That involves a peel out of the velcro because a direct pull is often fighting the highest strength point of the velcro. Ed
  6. I feel like such a loser. I don't have a star yet!! Ed
  7. I have been using an IP 5 (very similar to IP 7). It is very compact, lightweight and the videos are of good quality (I think great). As long as you use the A/V jacks to output you will have no problem. It is when you try to firewire to a DV that you find it isn't compatible. I tried doing digital editing and in spite of claims by Pinnacle that their software works with MicroMV, my experience was that it never worked well. There also is no lanc port, so I used a 1/2" round mirror on my altimeter to allow me to see the light on the front of the camera. With this said, I recently purchased a PC 109 to get better digital editing. I think that MicroMV would have been the best way for us to go, but somebody dropped the ball at Sony and they never quite finished the project. Ed
  8. I admit to only reading part of your post. Think of it this way. What would your landlord or anyone taking over the building do with a bunch of empty apartments? You are the most important person in the equation. Ed
  9. If this guy had checked out and started skydiving again, he would have been in for a real dose of reality. I know I had to swallow some of that cockiness, skydivers today are far better than we were in those times. Whippersnappers, don't get cocky over that, we blazed through a trail of unknowns for you. Ed
  10. Has anyone told you how lucky you were that it wasn't worse? All I can think is, Yeah, I sure am lucky!!! Ed
  11. Me too. Most of my cave diving buddies are dead. Some were world class and held records, but still died. Taught basic scuba and cave diving for a number of years and owned a dive shop. Used to fly groups to Eleuthera, Bahamas about once a month. Several of us bought a 28 foot Luhrs and used it for diving when loran first became available for civilian use. Later we upgraded to a 42 foot Atlantic and started taking groups. I was fortunate to be diving at a time when electronics allowed us to find things that could not be found earlier. I have found a number of artifacts, one of which is a 275 pound bronze bell that is on display in the dive shop at North Myrtle Beach, SC. Ed
  12. If you go through all of this to make things more foolproof for the image of the sport, you still have military demo teams exempt from the rules when doing civilian demo jumps. The Rockingham fiasco was done by an exempt group. What is proposed as a test of skill would, in this area not be a legal demo jump because the 15 feet all around is subtracted from the 5000 sq. feet landing area, ie, if you can't land there, it isn't landing area. We are required to add it to the legal landing area. I am happy to do that. Ed

    Close call...

Did you know your web site is for sale?
  14. A limited commercial pilots license is a commercial license with a limitation. In this case, without an instrument rating. The answer to your question is, yes. See FAR 61.133 Commercial Pilot privileges and limitations. (b) Limitations clip clip and does not hold an instrument rating in the same category and class will be issued a commercial pilot certificate that contains the limitation, "The carriage of passengers for hire on cross-country flights in excess of 50 nautical miles or at night is prohibited." (See above reg for complete and exact wording.) Then when you get the instrument rating, the limitation is removed. 15. I received a reply from them (2K) last week on this subject. They say it is not an exact fit and that they have not had their hands on one of the cameras yet. They reported that one of their dealers had done it and some modification of the bracket was required. They expect to fit to it as soon as they get a camera in hand. Ed
  16. Sony HC 40, PC 105 and the PC 109 can be bought for about the same price. Which has the best features and which is smaller. I am considering a 2k Composites helmet. Ed
  17. Squeak, Gun talk is frowned upon in this forum, check your PM's. Ed
  18. So can anyone here give me (a senssible & serious) reason WHY any civillian NEEDS an automatic assult type weapon, as opposed to a breech loader or semi auto? I expect to see this moved as well. They don't. The media has misreported this so many times that 98% of people believe this. Automatic assault type weapons were illegal before I was born, they are today and they will be next year. No action is required on anyone's part for this to be true. Ed
  19. Until I saw the "smiley wink", I was confused by the question. David knows and I expect with all of those ratings, you do too. Welcome to the group. Ed
  20. Too bad, but at least you made a good choice. Ed
  21. As has been stated, it is largely a cost issue with General Aviation. My first rig cost $45 for main, h/c, reserve and modification. My first plane cost $1400 and I made lots of jumps from it. I didn't make much, but I could easily afford to fly and jump. There were many small planes around small airports that are now deserted. Insurance was not required and very few had it. I charge more than half of the responsibility to the court system. Lawyers include just about everyone in a lawsuit who made a part for a plane that crashes. At one time, more than 50% of the cost of aircraft manufacture went to insurance. One example is the Piper that ran out of fuel and the propeller manufacturer was included in the suit. I really miss the old days of General Aviation. I would not be a skydiver or a pilot if the costs then were as much as they are today. You need to have been around a while to see what has really happened. Ed
  22. Whatever you do, don't try using a Lexmark. They do not make a water resistant ink. I have had good results with HP. Best Buy had a factory rep for Epson this week. I spoke with him about water resistance and fading. They have an ink that he swears by. I have forgotten the name, but it is something "Brite", I believe. The printer has to be compatible with the process or it won't work. You can't just buy the cartridge. Ed
  23. Everybody gets a turn. In South Carolina, we are expecting as much as 8" of rain and tornados within the next 18 hours. The ground is already saturated. I still prefer the "well used" hurricanes over the "fresh off the water" ones. Ed
  24. I just want to know what is going to hold up that elevator tether into space and if it falls, will it hit my house? Ed
  25. I don't know about legal, but wouldn't that put a B-12 too close to the groin? OUCH!!! I have had the manufacturer modify rigs for me and the average cost was $100. Ed
