Just a couple of things based on experience with FSDO people. Go ahead and file the form even if the inspector is wrong. It isn't a big deal. They can get away with almost anything by saying 9-11. Make sure the form is completed in a way that looks professional. Aerial photographs of the landing area with dimensions drawn in are good. It might be a good idea to get a "team" name rather than file in your name. It just adds a greater degree of credibility to the form. Don't forget the other details mentioned here like ATC and airport management. ATC might take a couple of weeks to clear if you are near a control tower. If it looks like you know what you are doing, you will get less of a hassle. If the inspector does get unreasonable, don't be hesitant to bring out AC 105 and present the facts in an emotionless way. My manual says to turn it off if you will be flying somewhere or driving in hilly terrain. I leave mine to turn itself off at all other times and I easily get the two year battery life. Ed

Pictures of making a dual can smoke bracket for M-18 military smoke. Email me if you want them. Sufficient detail cannot be achieved with the attachment size limitation.

I cannot know for sure, but upon reflection, I think I know what caused the spin-up on my canopy. It was one of those "aw, it'll be fine" pack jobs. I recall that there was very little line slack between the bag and the riser. This caused a little line tension against the reserve pack inside the tray. It was "sort of" pulling the risers toward the center. I believe that as the bag lifted from the tray that one line side caught, the other was free and the bag probably spun off of my back. I will be careful to try two things, at least for a while. 1. Leave a little (more) slack between the riser and the bag. 2. Be ready, but touch risers as late as possible. All comments have been helpful and I hope relating the experience has been helpful to others in deciding what is best for them. By the way, I do not have (nor want) an RSL on my freefall rig. My record is still intact. I haven't had to cut away since before most of you were born (1972). Ed

I normally grab my risers on opening, but I am re-thinking that procedure. On Saturday my Sabre2 did one of those "slam" openings (never happened before) and spun up catching my left hand in the risers as well as my altimeter. It pinned my chin to my chest, quite awkward and painful. Even though I couldn't see my altimeter (or my canopy), I was altitude aware and could see my handles and if needed could have cut away with the right hand. It would have been scary if it had been my right hand that was caught!!! It cleared and landing was uneventful. Have I been alone in grabbing risers early during opening? Ed

I have found that the B/W cameras give a better night image than the color cameras, even when specs are the same. Ed

Big-way, hard pull, reserve, biplane, tree landing

It's good to know we have someone here who is smart enough to make these decisions for the rest of us. Ed -

Allen, Dave has been criticized for everything from his choice of reserve to rescuing himself. The reserve by the way is a common choice. I have a number of jumps on a rig with identical numbers. You know people die skydiving as well as climbing down from trees and many consider skydiving stupid. I will whistle my tune and others may whistle theirs. He made the decision to come down after a long period of time. It was a good decision as proven by the end result. Ed -
Thanks, I am in Raeford and my manual is at home. If I put the unit in slo mode and take it to terminal, will it matter? Do I have to change it before each different type of jump? It's not unusual to sign on for 3500 and get 5500 by the time the Otter is on jump run. Ed

This week, while using the Pro Track as an audible and the Neptune as a visual, I made a number of hop and pops. The Neptune recorded all correctly, the Pro Track missed any jump under 6 seconds of freefall. Ed Edited for spelling.

It is a violation of every merchant agreement that I have ever seen to add a fee if one uses a credit card or to discount if they do not. I am not aware of any law in my state that would forbid such a practice. With that said, the credit card companies do not care what the merchant does since I am aware of complaints and nothing was ever done about it. Ed

Caution. Reformatting and reinstalling Windows does not always work. I once had a virus in the boot sector of my hard drive and even reformatting did not wipe it out. I had the same problem after all of the work. Make sure any virus is gone before you reformat or try any other solution. Ed

FAA question: Can a private pilot fly a jump plane?
EDYDO replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Here we go again. Same topic, same people, same answers. I agree with everything that has been said above until you get to Hookinswoop's final statement, "Bottom line, you must have a commercial license to fly jumpers." That wasn't correct when he said it in the past and it isn't correct now. There are times when a private pilot can fly jumpers, but flying for someone sitting in the back who is paying (as described in your original post) is not one of those circumstances. Ed -

Terrible for all involved, but also terrible for skydiving. I am concerned about copy cats. If you want to kill yourself, please don't involve our sport. Ed -
I can't believe the air is that clear!!! Ed

On arrival, JR rewired an RV space for the motorhome. We had a mechanical problem and he found a mechanic who came to the DZ and fixed the problem without ripping me off. I enjoyed the organized jumps. They do a great job at making one feel right at home.

When I arrived the RV park was full, but they found a place for me to park and would not charge for it. Then they gave me an orientation tour and explained their system. The planes stayed busy because of team jumps and assured space for me. One non-team jumper made 20 jumps a day for several days (PD tests). You can get in the jumps if you want to. I liked the computer manifest screens. You can always tell where you stand. I was allowed to get out low when I wanted to work on my PRO accuracy and the S&TA observed from manifest. Easiest PRO jumps I ever made. (Yes, I missed one but not the fault of the DZ.) I walked the DZ and observed grippers on suits vs no grippers and knew who to approach about jumping with me. The teams have uniform outfits and are obvious. I had no problem getting in 4 jumps a day with 3 to 5 others with similar interests. (I could have made more.) I did have to ask around for them, but big deal. Oh yes, take your notebook computer, the restaurant has a wireless internet link.

Short SCUBA course: 1. Put that thing in your mouth and breathe. 2. Don't hold your breath because it will kill you. 3. Ya'll be careful now, ya hear. Ed

Got both, like both. No problems with either. The Neptune is water resistant, does more and costs less. Neptune batteries are easier to find. Ed
