  1. There is another thing to consider here. Cypres bases their 4 year update requirements on manufacturing date. Let's say you buy one that sat around for two years and was then sent in for the 4 year. That Cypres will need another 4 year in only two years. That's crazy, but that's the way it is. Ed
  2. I read those. What must someone do to be banned from membership for life? It must be pretty serious. Ed
  3. When I sent mine in for service it came back with the back plate removed. Instead they are using a washer on each screw.Quote At one time there was a warning posted that the backplate added support to the unit and prevented flexing when used as a visual. I can't find that warning, but I intend to keep the back plate just in case. Ed
  4. Sorry you lost the Neptune, but that was one of my favorite all time jumps. Ed
  5. Just before a skydive, we were both admiring and discussing our somewhat new Neptune Digital altimeters that we were using as visuals. During the skydive, we both saw his leave his hand and there was nothing we could do about it. That was a $250 skydive. The moral to the story is that if you have an electronic altimeter and you use it on your hand, install the metal back plate or you will likely lose it. Ed
  6. One more story to add: We used a Para-Commander and it worked well for the guys. Then a lightweight young lady wanted to try and she did. After climbing up, the canopy did a cartwheel just like a kite with no tail. She missed the ground a foot or two and we never tried it again. I don't think water would help very much. I remember when Delta Two's were popular, a couple of guys decided it would be fun to spin them down into the water. The results were fatal. Ed
  7. Noon Sunday: Fox News just reported that they believe he is dead, dna tests will confirm that the body is actually his. Ed
  8. March issue has a Larsen & Brusgaard (Pro-Track) ad. It is a picture of a hybrid jump, two way flat with a jumper standing on their backs and another hanging from their chest straps. Most skydiving pix are pretty cool, not sure if this is the issue you mean. Buy the book. Ed
  9. I suppose you are referring to the Haliburton charges for delivering gasoline by truck into Iraq. I don't pretend to know what that is worth, but man, can you imaging what that would be like? Ed
  10. ] Ed, you said the each of the above quotes in two different posts. Can you see a little inconsistency in your comments? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with either, I just wish you would make up your mind. My mind is made up and stated. I began jumping before AAD's were available, hence the fact that I have more R/W jumps without an AAD than with. As for the accuracy rig that I presently jump, without one, that is soon to be remedied. I want all of the odds in my favor. Finally, I support each person making up his own mind. Ed
  11. Today's paper has a writeup about George Bush's next skydive at age 80. There will be a $100 fee for spectators with proceeds going to charity. There is a photo of a previous jump with his cheststrap just under his chin. Hey guys, please get him a better fitting rig this time!!! Ed
  12. They have? Since when? Your post made me realize something about my views toward AAD's. I primarily look at them as, "they won't hurt me." They mis-fired pretty often in the beginning. Yeah, I still view their effectiveness as, "maybe" mine would actually save me. Ed
  13. True, but life is filled with risk management. I choose who to skydive with and in what situations. That's what I make my decisions based on. Not if I have a Cypres on my back or not. If you like, I can come up with other possibilities. For example, do you choose who jumps out behind you and isn't supposed to be there? There are lots more. It is difficult to see how an active skydiver can avoid jumping with strangers. I do it every week. Ed
  14. My wireless is on 24/7. It can only be picked up in the yard, but if you're in the area, feel free to park in the driveway and hack to your heart's content. Ed
  15. If you're going to jump with them, make sure they have a TSO. Ed
  16. A lot of you (experienced jumpers) are missing the point of having a Cypres (AAD). If you feel you need one because your skills are lacking, you should consider another sport. If you think you don't need one because you are really really good, then what about that dummy on the load with you who dives right into you so hard that you are rendered unconscious? To answer the original question, I have two rigs, one has a Cypres and one does not. I do only low solo jumps without a Cypres. Over the long haul, I have more RW jumps without an AAD than with, but they have been perfected and I just don't trust others to be safe and proficient. The odds are with you, but it could happen. With this said, I support your right to choose for yourself, but please be informed. Ed
  17. Actually, nothing has changed. As a kid back in the 60's I used to listen to Radio Moscow on the shortwave. It was political propaganda and music. I sent them a signal report with my location via United States mail. The feds came to my door, and.........that was the second time they had come!!!! Ed
  18. Human animals are made of meat. You don't eat humans though, do you? No. All animals suffer pain, whether human-animals or non-human animals. If humans treated other species with a bit more respect by not eating them, maybe we could learn to treat each other a bit better You're serious, aren't you? Whay do you not post information about yourself in your profile? Ed
  19. QuoteIt's so important, I started a new thread, but will repeat here: Sorry, but I think sending more than $50 or $100 to "someone on the internet" is just plain stupid. There is a very simple and effective way to protect both buyer and seller, for a reasonable fee, $47 on a $1,500 transaction (more if by credit card) ___________________________________ Here is something I did on a deal that sounded too good to be true on a telescope. I called "Mailboxes" in that town, made arrangements with them to pack and ship and I sent them the money. When the guy brought the item in, in good condition, they were to pay him and pack it up. He did, they did and I still use it. I just couldn't pass up the deal. Ed
  20. Suddenly, I don't feel like I'm the only one anymore. Anyone come up with a universal solution for mothers? Yep, after 35 years or so they figure if you haven't killed yourself by now, you won't. Ed
  21. He'll be jumpin' with ya before you know it!!! Ed
  22. I haven't jumped with this thing yet, but based on the service will be telling everyone I know about them. I'll try it out this weekend and the Paralog too. You will like the Neptune. I use mine as a visual and it is the best I have ever used, big numbers, lightweight and small. I attach it to my glove, no straps. Ed
  23. I don't know why people think that "W" is a conservative, he clearly isn't if you look at the record. What bothers me is that we can choose between "somewhat liberal" or "extreme liberal" and I am a conservative on most issues. Ed
  24. My family considers skydiving a normal thing and has no reservations about watching. Some participate. My mother was the last one to accept it, but now she shows the freefall photos to her friends. My grandchildren come out and watch on occassion. My wife went into labor with my son (now a sometimes jumper) at the airport and I missed a lift that day. She could have waited, don't you think? Ed
  25. Actually, I have been on very few loads in the last year that the exits were even on the true wind-line, much less good enough to get a round back to the airport. Fortunately, you can put one in, just about anywhere. I have two round UNMODIFIED (for the young whippersnappers, that means no steering capability at all) reserve landings. In today's jump environment, you aren't going to find very may people even capable of spotting for a round. I believe an unconscious or incapacitated person landing under 1.2 to 1 has a very good chance of serious injury or death. Ed Consider how few of today's jumpers can spot for a square main much less a round reserve... I think I'll stick with my square.
