  1. Trustworthy? "NationMaster is a vast compilation of data from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, World Resources Institute, UNESCO, UNICEF and OECD." >edit to add, the source for that particular stat for example is from "Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems, covering the period 1998 - 2000 (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention)"< Of course its open to challenge, and the data is not necessarily up to date, some stats I've seen there are 5 years old. If anyone has a similar comparative site, I'd be glad to refer to that in the future. "It seems to indicate that gun related crime is higher per-capita in the US than the UK." Hard to swallow isn't it? Thats my opinion too, gun related murder isn't particularly high over here, despite the howls of disbelief from the Hoplophiles. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. Not yet, but I reckon Auchenblae is way down the list of targets. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  3. "Too soon to say, IMO" But are we too late to change our effect on it? That report suggests that even if we cutback CO2 emmissions RIGHT NOW, it will take a huge time for the scab to heal. "The EEA underlines the very long time it would take to slow the rate of climate change, because of the longevity of many gases. 4. "As long as it takes you to go to the Halliburton site." Aw c'mon Bill, I'm going to deploy the 'we were only following orders' defence here. Haliburton, Bechtel, AMEC, Costain, Agip, Aker etc design and build (amongst other things)petrochemical facilities around the world. They all generally work to a basis of design provided by their clients. This BOD will detail things like, amongst others, limits of environmental disharges, fugitive emmissions etc etc. The limits on environmental performance are placed upon the designers by the clients and are generally a combination of local license agreements with the host's government (huge effect), the clients own enivironmental policies (medium effect), and Halliburton's code of business conduct (very limited effect). So for example a refinery in Nigeria's Delta region, will be dirty and dangerous because the local laws allow it, and project economics (client will normally only pay to adhere to the license agreement) dictate it. Until we have governments tightening up the license agreements, a bit like your EPA rules for cars, it is very difficult to make a business case (cost benefit analysis and prosecution of the ALARP argument) for improved environmental performance and safety, to the client from the designers point of view. The real baddies in this case are the local governments, and the the people who refuse to pay for environmental 'responsibility' as what is often seen as a nice to have. Those baddies are the clients, eg Exxon Mobil, Conoco Phillips, BP, Shell, TFE, Texaco Chevron etc. NB I have included European majors in this list, and I am currently working on projects for most of those on that list.
  5. "Any link that proves that?" Depends on how you want to measure quality of education.. http://www.nationmaster.com/cat/Education Loads of statistics here, fill your boots. Its a pretty good site, but some folks just don't like it, can't think why. With due respect to our colonial cousins, just because its popular, IE people sending their kids from abroad, doesn't mean its effective. Some stats show the USA up top, others show a different picture. Statistics..depends what you measure, how you measure it, and how you report it.
  6. "And I agree with Kennedy that we are more likely seeing and recording changes to the environment that occur naturally with or without man's involvement." I agree that weather is cyclic, however I also believe that we are accelerating the process. A bit like picking at a scab and not letting it heal. Ultimately that graze on the knee will result in gangrene. The EEA report is nicely summarised here. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3570602.stm "There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities." Is that clear enough for everybody? Rape the land and poison the sea, just don't take away my SUV. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. Skycat, International Mountain Rescue Handbook Hamish MacInnes ISBN 0094753601 Is a great place to start. Lots in there (from memory) about setting up self, partner, and organised rescue. The author is pretty well respected, to say the least.
  8. I'd also like to hear how people would react to the not dissimilar situation described by Wendy further up the thread. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1202460#1202460 Its an equally unpleasant place to find oneself. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. Can you capture etc without premiere? If so are your premiere capture settings correct? You should be saving as a PAL preset, should be loaded into the capture settings as PALDV or similar. Set device control to a generic sony try PC7 as this works with most rogue cams, and was an early cam. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 10. "I am guessing that this format isnt recognised by DVD/TV players. " Thats basically it, let us know if the above works for you, glad to help.
  11. Yep, go here, download the latest tsunami encoder. http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html This will help you make a VCD or (better quality)SVCD. The entire project (I'm assuming you dumped a whole load of footage onto a cd as AVI?)will require to be rendered into this format then burned to disc. It should then play on your DVD player, not all DVD players can read VCD/SVCD, but its almost certain that your one can't read raw AVI files. I'll chat with you in the avvo about your other prob.
  12. "Simon had other options available to him." Such as? "There's a reason Simon was shunned and outcasted in the mountain climbing community." I recall attending a lecture by Simon Yates, and he was anything but shunned, well at least in the Clachaig Inn where the lecuture was held. He was welcomed, appreciated, and the lecture was oversubscribed. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 13. Definitely seeing it here, try logging out, deleting your dropzone.com cookie, then log back in, you'll need to sign in again. 14. "by the way, what happened to the little link that used to let you link directly to a post?" This discussion is nothing to do with me, but isn't the 'copy shortcut' under the avatar over here..
  15. "I don't like it, its my opinion." Different strokes for different folks, some of our grub is crap, but not all Texan food is wonderful. What we need is a blend of the best.... 18. What about currency considerations? Would you do anything to manage AGL effects? Finally planform and performance considerations. I'm not knocking you for having a go at trying to address a serious issue, that in itself is admirable, its just that it could be a little more complex than wingloading alone.
  19. Hey Zen.... "Big man, pig man, ha ha charade you are. You well heeled big wheel, ha ha charade you are. And when your hand is on your heart, You're nearly a good laugh, Almost a joker, With your head down in the pig bin, Saying "Keep on digging." Pig stain on your fat chin. What do you hope to find. When you're down in the pig mine. You're nearly a laugh, You're nearly a laugh But you're really a cry."
  20. "Hey NacMac? It's "colors". Spread the word, huh? Seems like just about everybody over there is getting that one wrong." I do like your sense of humour, Deuce. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. "What goes good with Freedom Fries?" A nice tall glass of cool Mecca Cola.
  22. "Favorite Pink Floyd quote" Man, thats like asking what your favourite beer is, they are all good. Personally though... Wish you were here, all of it. The album means a lot to me and it helped get me through some pretty lonely times in nasty places with it on my walkman. This bit in particuar... So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? And did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage? How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears, wish you were here.

  25. Gaddaffi has distanced himself from the Arab nations, and now considers himself more of of an African than a Middle Eastern. However the leopard can apparently change his spots, but before we embrace him like a prodigal son,we really ought to recall just what he was up to when he wasn't our friend.... Aha, the Olympics start today, he was a suporter of the Black September gangs (terrorists) that -amongst other attrocities-murdered 11 athletes at the Munich games. Financer and supporter of the PLO, in fact from wikipedia.."widely regarded in the West as the principal financier of international terrorism" Lets recall the Berlin discotheque bombing. And finally, the Lockerbie bombing, could have been a whole lot worse, a couple of minutes later and it would have been over Glasgow. Recall the Libyan embassy siege? But he shows up with a wedge of cash, a truck load of oil, and he's our friend. I ask the world in general again, how much cash would OBL have to come up with to say sorry for 9/11. Our anger and desire for justice is obviously negotiable, and a commodity that has a value, so how much?? Gnash, gnash, give Iona a hug from me Mike
