"I think I'd rather take my chances rigless than wear one of those things" Hey Ted, I recall discussing building escape parachutes here, just after 9/11....aha, here it is... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=48395#48395 Upshot of that chat was that some flame retardent overalls, gloves, a smoke hood, and a chem light stick stashed in a wee baggie would probably make more sense. Its a legal requirement (here anyways) that people are trained in the use of any specialised emergency equipment that they have to use, so this might give that excuse to finally take up BASE. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Kris, can you get at the sockets (firewire and composite) without taking the cam off the mount? Well I'd rather cut my hand off and eat it than use it to vote for our right wing Conservative party. Our left have kinda lost the plot, see Tony Blair's recent gaffes following Dubbya into the desert. Our Liberals are a joke. I'm going to give my vote to King Alex and his SNP. But I'm not sure that this is what you meant Ted. Beer time here, I sure wish it was a Shiner, have a good one folks. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Just out of interest, will there be any difference in foreign policy if there is a regime change in the US? I'm beginning to suspect not. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "If you want the upperlevel coaching rants, the ones with absofuckinglutely badass-amazing blending of those damned 4-letter words into your rant, well, that costs a wee bit extra." Y'see this just another example of the fundamental difference between you and I.... "Maybe someone should tell him that very few deer hunters ever "crawl around on (their) bellies."" Ach, they do over here, most of our red deer at least are shot in pretty open moorland, stalking them requires a fair bit of heather munching (lucky Heather eh). At least, I recall spending a lot of my time on my belly as a certified deer stalker.

Why is it when you're injured, friends seem to disappear?
nacmacfeegle replied to Muenkel's topic in The Bonfire
Au contraire Chris. I've two close calls in my life. The first invovled a lot of flames and charred flesh. I had cards and support from people I didn't even consider to be acquaintances. The other time, low turn and kinda dumb, but I still had a lot of visits from pals. If only to give them the chance to regail me with their tales of derring do and to point out at the skyvan climbing near the hospital. Some people do have an aversion to hospitals, but I'm prepared to wager a beer or three that if you pitched up at the DZ, you might have more friends say hi than you might imagine. -
Whatever the reasons, I reckon abandoning apartheid was the right thing to do. I like to think it was a morally the right thing to do, but it doesn't really matter now......... Its gone and after the period of Truth and Reconciliation, the country has returned to an albeit fragile peace. Compare the transition of SA to that of Zimbabwe and you get something of an idea of what could have been, had things not gone so well for you guys. "But that's our story. Yours, and that of the US, is still being written." Ah yes, but I can't help feeling the final chapter in the Book of the British Empire is already on its way to the publishers, along with the preface for the New American Century. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. For what its worth, the 'Tory-graph' is notoriously right wing (for this country anyways) in its reporting. Its got the best job adverts of the daily papers though. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "he's done the American people a diservice in the same way that many South African politicians during the apartheid era had massive (white minority) political support, as well as government support from many nations, but turned ordinary South Africans, both Black and White, into pariahs abroad for not doing more to put an end to apartheid." But apartheid was banished was it not? At least officially, and despite the efforts of the likes of Terreblanche. The country survived the enormous change that was required. That change process was largely down to an individual who had spent most of his life incarcerated on terrorism charges, but who nevertheless emerged from a prison cell to lead the country through an extremely difficult transition. People who are looking to radical reforms, and even regime change could do a whole lot worse than to follow South Africa's model. Just my opinion. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Well, at lest there appears to be anelement of consistency in your thoughts. Its not my intention to address the rights or wrongs of the death penalty. We'll never draw that one to a close. I'm more interested in addressing the apparent inconsistency between say, upholding the death penalty, whilst condemning stem cell research and abortion, or vice versa. This is an inconsistency that I currently share with Dubbya, and that, to me is alarming! -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Why is a convicted murderer's life more important than an unborn child's?" I don't really know, the question is more inquisitive than rhetorical in its purpose. Just for a change I'm actually looking for answers as opposed to just being my usual irritating self. BTW where do you stand on the death penalty? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "In both our countries, we tend so far towards socialism that if you package it in nice words...etc " Yes indeed, we are both probably best described as either socially minded capitalists, or business oriented socialists. "I'm talking UK as a whole, and the laws of London, I don't claim to understand the intricacies distinguishing Scottish versus English versus Welsh versus Irish parliamentary issues" I'm glad, as not even I understand what is going on there. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Socialism is..... Much reviled in a capitalist society. Not quite communism. defined as.... "the set of beliefs which states that all people are equal and should share equally in the wealth of the country, or the political systems based on these beliefs" As opposed to communism.... "the belief in a society without different classes in which the methods of production are owned and controlled by all its members and everyone works as much as they can and receives what they need" I see socialism as a balance to capitalism, there must be balance, otherwise the capitalism will tend to fascism, just as unbalanced socialism will tend to communism in the absence of capitalism. Society needs to embrace elements of socialism and capitalism to function, without reverting to extremism. Thats an awful lot of 'isms' for one post though, fancy a beerism? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Hi John, welcome back.

I'll definitely update you after I've tried to break my workmate's one. Mark (workmate) has had his for about 6 weeks with nothing to gripe about so far. He is into some funky stuff like hacking X boxes, PS2s, overclocking already blisteringly fast pooters etc, so I guess he knows his stuff. I'm not sure if he'll let me take his one up for bit of suck it and see..... He loves it by the way, and I'm verging on getting one purely for its intended purpose of being a portable VCR. Don't really know about the Linux thing, judging by what Mark was telling me, if its not compatible, somebody will probably hack it and produce a workaround. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. The UN gave your boss an excuse to settle a family grudge.... sorry . Yeah, I did say it was less than perfect, but look at all it could be and tell me thats not worth working at. That all looks good to me, but I am sad that you wish to leave the UN. I still have pretty high hopes for a forum where nations can "jaw jaw, not war war".
