  1. i can't honestly answer your poll, because while i like cars, and forced to choose i prefer F1 above all... My favorite kind of "car" does all those things. Packaged into one amazing little machine...but it only has 2 wheels OHHHH BABY, Nick Hayden suuuuure looks good in red! 2. ok. ask your friends or family how little they would be willing to work for, and what jobs they'd be willing to do. Pick avocados? wash dishes in a restaurant? Now ask yourself how much you'll pay for avocados (or your fruit or vegetable of choice. I know there are some poor misguided people on this earth who hate avocados ). Blaming it all on the illegals is an easy way out. But what about the people in America who have become so puffed up and egotistical that see all of those jobs as "beneath" them? I give you this thread in Bonfire: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3516085;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread as a perfect example. So blame the dirty mexicans because it's easy and they look or sound different than us. Yep. It's ALL their fault! 3. I think you put the quotes around the wrong word there. What is the "problem" exactly? People who want work and are willing to work for less compensation are hired to perform tasks. Those people are compensated in accordance with their agreements. Goods (and services) are produced more cheaply, benefiting anyone who consumes those goods (or services). So, um, what's the problem here? It just kind of seems like basic economics in action. Oh, I agree with you. I was actually trying to bring the "kick em all out!" people to task to actually THINK about what that would really mean for them. I guess i'm a bleeding heart, but i still think "the poor, tired, huddled masses yearning to be free" should be welcomed, not hated. 4. didn't say anything about making new laws. I guess i'll ask you then. How much are you willing to pay for a head of lettuce? a pound of tomatoes? A meal at your favorite restaurant? $2 for the lettuce? $5 for the tomatoes? $50 for the meal? Mind you i am NOT making a judgment here as to the rightness or wrongness of paying illegals lower than min wage. I am asking, do you really think americans are willing to put their money where their mouths are? Are YOU? Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  5. Because there's no incentive. Do you HONESTLY think that raiding businesses and arresting the aliens is going to change things? What i want to know is...why aren't they raiding said businesses and CLOSING THEM DOWN? Target the true source of the problem. You know who that is? The business owners, farmers, and yes, even your average American who is used to super-cheap goods and services. Until you change those minds...there's never going to be a "fix" to the problem. However, it's much much easier to blame and punish the ones who are different from us, right? Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  6. Out here in California, people with pickup trucks seem to think it's OK to pile all their household shit in the bed and roll down the freeway at 80 MPH, with only a piece of twine holding it all in. So i've had to swerve around couches, boxes, a chair, and some sort of appliance (i am thinking it was a box freezer, since those might be light enough to fall out of a truck). Another common occurrence is the "mattress tied to the top of the tiny sedan with twine". which of course leads to "mattress lying in the middle of the fast lane on the 15...." 7. right. Notice the results do not indicate a total lack of belief in a god or higher power. just lack of "religion". I wonder if the poll even asked who considered themselves a "follower of Jesus", which is what MANY non-denominational churches and their members are calling themselves these days. Why? for exactly the reasons Wendy enumerated. To me the poll doesn't necessarily indicate a large rise in atheism, rather a small rise in atheism and a larger rise in those who may believe, but don't identify with a particular church. 8. not sure horse racing is all that popular anymore...unless the story is set in the 1920's. poker or blackjack or sports book betting, on the other hand, might be seen as more reasonable nowadays. only time i've been to a race was the kentucky derby in 1999...i put 5 dollars on a little unknown horse named "Charismatic" and won. 30-1 odds! Why that horse? because like any little girl i always wanted a horse, and i was going to name my horse "Charisma", should i ever get one. It was fate, i tells ya! FATE! 9. totally depends on your experience level. My SV 650 has a race shock on it and i can either double tip-toe or easily 1-foot it. I usually 1-foot. As for a first bike, i wouldn't go for a sportster either. Look for something 500cc or smaller. if that's not possible, a 650 may be ok. The suzuki SV-650 is actually a great little bike, and quite affordable. My first bike was a Honda CB-1, a little 400cc sport/standard, but i doubt you'll be able to find one of those, since they were only sold here in 1989 and 1990, lol. 10. never lied. However, i've considered leaving stuff off my resume to get a part time job at a retail place. every place i go to get a job like that tells me i'm "overqualified" and they don't want to pay me manager-level pay. I couldn't give two fucks about that, i just want the damned job. so i've considered leaving some education/experience details off...but i never do because i would just end up talking about it anyway. I have a big mouth! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  11. i have to wonder how much the average "kick em all out" believer would be willing to pay for a head of lettuce. Or a tomato. Or how much for a night out at their favorite restaurant. What about those of you with no job at the moment? Willing to spend all day in the fields for minimum wage or less picking vegetables? washing dishes or cooking at a restaurant? Obama is not to blame for illegal immigration. It's hard to place blame when there's so much to go around. How about educators, who have stressed "self-esteem" in schools to the point where american kids are unwilling to "settle" for unskilled labor. Heck, most skilled labor positions are hurting right now because who wants to be a welder? that's waaaaay too lower class for us! Or how about blame the business owners who hire illegals because they'll work for less than minimum wage, thus driving costs down and profits up? Isn't that the capitalist ideal? Or as i mentioned before, how about the average american who is so used to paying $1.29 per pound of tomatoes that any sort of price increase would drive them screaming out of the supermarkets? AHHH, but it's so much easier to blame the immigrants themselves, right? yeah. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  12. good. replace "mexicans" with "gays" in your sentences and you have stated the point EXACTLY. NOW, my question is, since i don't have a legal education, what is the PROCESS to get said state constitutional amendment struck down under the FEDERAL 14th amendment? I've been reading that it will never go to the USSC, because it's a california matter. But if the state's constitution violates the federal, what then? You would expect it to be challenged in court. Is that not what's happening now with prop 8? Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  13. this thread is funny I would call you out for blatant trolling but...you seem so vehement and sincere! I think it may just be *real*! hahaha Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  14. What i'm saying that you are also saying is that civil unions are fine. What i'm saying that you seem to overlook is also that CURRENTLY, there ARE laws in California that ONLY apply to "married" couples. as in, the term "married" is in the law, NOT the term "civil union". So the easier and more practical solution is allow gays to use the word "marriage". That way they are also covered under the laws that require "marriage". Or you can try to get the legislature to completely strike the word "marriage" from all of it's laws. Honestly, i think this is the best solution, but realistically, i don't think it will happen. it's probably a logistical nightmare. I don't think anyone is writing off civil unions as being not good enough. What i'm saying is RIGHT NOW, they are not considered "marriages" by many many laws in california. So if you consider it in those terms, yeah, civil unions aren't good enough...yet. Thus any rights afforded by laws which use the terms "marriage", "married", or "spouse" could next be on the challenge block by people who want to take rights away from people who are different than them. 15. Good. In all cases? no, but you're generalizing, so shall I. Read this as to WHY i think it's good and why prop 8 was bad news. http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/1114/p09s01-coop.html civil rights have a progression. Do you honestly think that had it been put to a majority vote in 1964, the integration of public schools and the "separate but equal" doctrine would have been voted down by the majority of the public? HONESTLY? Brown vs. Board of Education was a landmark case because it "overturned the voting power of the majority". the sky didn't fall, and we're a better place and "separate but equal" is viewed as ridiculous by the vast majority of people today. all the "marriage" vs. "domestic partnership" argument is now is "separate but equal" packaged up in different terminology. Unless CA changes every single law that mentions "marriage", "married", or "spouse" then there is no equality under those laws for these people. If you don't think a greedy insurance company won't capitalize on this difference of language, you're living under a rock. 16. it's an event to raise money. actually putting on the event (organizing, operating, etc) COSTS money, i.e. overhead. sorry if i was vague. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  17. It depends on where you go. The farther you get from Kansas City and/or Memphis, the less likely it is to find good BBQ. Over the past eight years, I've lived in four different Florida cities, and spent quite a bit of time in a few others. I've yet to find decent BBQ in this state; it's just too far from Kansas City. A general rule for finding a good place for BBQ is that if you walk into a BBQ joint, and the chairs all match, the best option is to turn around and walk right back out. oh but that all depends on the type of BBQ! For example, my absolute favorite BBQ is eastern North Carolina BBQ...pulled pork slow cooked in a vinegar-based "sauce" with NO tomatoes ANYWHERE near that pig! soooooo good.... 18. Jan, normally i agree with most of what you post, but this is like a nice big kick in the...well, i would say balls, but none of the JFTC jumpers actually have those, so how about this...a nice big kick in the boobies for anyone looking to raise money to participate in JFTC. If you personally don't agree with or care to give to any JFTC participant, fine, don't. But don't come in here and advise people to screw their friends and fellow skysisters out of their opportunity to participate. Yeah, JFTC has overhead, but that's, um, kinda the point. jesus. 19. heh, last census i believe fewer than 20% of americans had a passport. Pretty sad, when you think about it. I bet skydivers as a sample are skewed, though. we do a lot of traveling to far off places for boogies, events, etc. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  20. hehe, cliff, you may wanna ask around about Amazon's background before jumping down her throat. Let's just say she's probably been in a position to have been able to inflict much more pain and "brutality" on subordinate people than many cops ever are. The difference, though, is that she probably never chose to abuse that position. This guy in the video? yeah, he did. Jeanne, don't fall for his trolling... 21. I know Lori, the trouble is, one of the big CAUSES of the superbugs is overuse and overperscription of antibiotics and antimicrobial *stuff*. Not to mention people never letting their kids get dirty. I'm not saying i don't wash my hands, of course i do. I just don't go to paranoid lengths to avoid all contact with germs. If something *looks* dirty, i don't touch it. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  22. This, this, a thousand times THIS! overuse of antibiotics, hyper-cleanliness, and all that craziness leads to the superbugs that are immune to anything we throw at them. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/27/health/27brod.html?em i've never done any of the things you listed. wanna know another secret? I *gasp* actually SIT on the toilet seat in public restrooms (if it looks clean and dry, of course) and i don't even use the paper cover thingies. i don't think i own a bottle of hand sanitizer...maybe for the garage? i'm rarely sick. I attribute all this more to my personal laziness than any lack of fear of germs. Doing all that silly stuff takes *work*! 23. Are you looking to race your car...or a motorcycle? Anyway, scca as suggested above is a good place to start. Some east coast tracks that probably have track days: Loudon, NH (http://www.nhms.com/) Mid-Ohio, as mentioned above Putnam Park in Indiana (a great, fun track: http://www.putnampark.com/) Road Atlanta (http://www.roadatlanta.com/) Virginia Int'l Raceway (http://www.virclub.com/) Summit Point in WV (http://www.summitpoint-raceway.com/ Beaver Run in PA (http://www.beaverun.com/) New Jersey Motorsports Park(http://www.njmotorsportspark.com/ those are off the top of my head, my husband having either raced or taken pictures of races at each of those places. There's also Daytona, of course, and JenningsGP in florida if you are talking about motorcycles. Barber in Alabama is an amazing new track, but those are kinda far... Also, if you're talking bikes, i know most tracks will require you to either take their local road-racing course, or show them an expert racers card from AMA or another roadracing club/association in order to go out on the track for track days. of course you'll also need full leathers and good gloves, boots, and a helmet. If you are talking bikes, a lot of times your local motorcycle shops will have track day information on hand. There are roadracers hiding everywhere, and they tend to set them up and try to advertise as much as possible Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  24. I don't care if they're purple or speak Swahili, i was using a local example. hell, maybe in Minnesota there's illegal scandinavians standing on the corner. I don't know, and it doesn't matter. What is pertinent to the question is if they are illegal or not. It seems the majority of folks think it's not ok, no matter your ethnicity.
