  1. Which is why we didn't lowball them. $40 for 3 hours isn't bad...plus benefits (if you count free lunch as benefits ) Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  2. hehe. well, the story was: my husband and his brother went back to NM this weekend and packed up all the rest of the stuff we had left in the house we just sold. They were planning on spending the day unloading said stuff into the storage unit here. My brother-in-law hurt his back. I can't really help because i'm currently sitting on a torn ACL/MCL/meniscus. The rental truck was due back before 5 pm today, and it needed to be unloaded. Unlike Bill's case, it was pretty obvious we wouldn't be able to find a reputable "contractor" or mover in time. So we hired them. Two guys, 3 hours of work, $40 each. Plus i made them sandwiches and iced tea. Now, i chose the "i'd use them in an emergency" option, because that's what we did. The issue comes, of course, in the legality of the hiring, the legality of their residency, and the moral issues of helping the poor vs. standing behind the principles of immigration law, etc. I have to admit, even though we hired them for the day, i didn't feel 100% comfortable doing so, mainly because of the legal and moral dilemmas it presented. Which is why i posted in SC, of course! fire away! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  3. If you live in the southwest, i'm sure you've seen it. Maybe even elsewhere, with other cultural or ethnic groups...i will stick to my local example for now. You drive to work in the morning, and every day, at the same spot, there is a large group of hispanic men standing around, waiting to be hired as day labor. You know with about 99.9% certainty that they are not in this country legally, nor do they have regular jobs. Who hires them? Could be anyone. The local general contractor, a gardening service, Joe Schmoe who needs his house painted and doesn't want to do it himself. How much do people pay them? who knows, it probably depends on the type of work to be done. Obviously, this works for them and they take what they can get. The poll above DOES have relevance, as my husband and i found ourselves in a situation today where the question arose: do we hire a couple of them for the day? what are our options here? I don't want to influence this, so i'll post the situation a bit later. As for now...what do you think about it? 4. troubling. I'm torn about kids being tried as adults. some kids should be, and some shouldn't. I just don't know that there's any concrete way to determine which. I have a hard time reading that story...the victim's last name is the exact same as my maiden name and it's creeping me out. And it's not exactly a common one! 5. yah, this is sad news. i used to listen to both Adam Corolla and Tom Leykis when i lived/worked in LA. both were great shows. Yes, i'm a chick who loves Tom Leykis's radio show...i know, it's weird, but i would guess i'm not typical, heh. 6. Be careful you don't confuse "incompetence" with "hamstrung by the 7,000-page FAR and other accompanying rules documents". Most of the government employees (myself being one of them as a member of the AF acquisition corps) were far from incompetent. we just weren't allowed to use common sense to get anything done. To play devil's advocate, the FAR and all those rules were originally written in response to the contractors suing, complaining, and otherwise raising issue with any sort of government actions. They were written to try to keep things "fair" for every competitor involved. It's kinda ironic, how a huge book of government regs was written to try to keep things as "capitalistic" as possible (promoting fair competition, etc)...and in the end all it led to was more SOCIALISTIC actions, mainly by people trying to get around the rules. As for the government not checking things out...when they try, all you get is screams by businesses of "OH NOES! SOCIALISM! GET OUT OF OUR AFFAIRS!" And we end up where we are now. Yes, i'd argue that sometimes, a little "socialism" can also be a good thing... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  7. lol seriously, try bump starting it before buying a lot of stuff...might just need to recharge the battery a bit. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  8. bump start it. Hopefully you have a nice gradual downhill somewhere near you (a sloped driveway should be enough). Or some nice buddies who would be willing to push you ;) if it's the battery, that will work, and you'll get it running, and get the battery charging. 9. That would be Nepenthe(http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/)It IS gorgeous, and surprisingly less expensive than you'd expect for what you get...it's a pretty well-known place. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  10. i second the Monterey aquarium. one of the best i've seen, by far! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  11. Avid, you could say. My browser homepage is gamespot.com ;) And i'm not ashamed. Video games is the largest and still fastest growing segment of the entertainment market. It's not just for nerdy kids anymore. As a matter of fact, most of the people i know through gaming are in their 20s or 30s. PC and Console, mainly the xbox 360. I'm less of a shooter fan and more RPG/action type game fan. Currently playing wow and eq2 on the PC, tooling through Lost Odyssey on the 360 (JRPG), next will be Prince of Persia and/or Gears of War 2. I'm a bit behind on the console, since i took several months to try a bunch of different MMOs... I loved CoD4...probably the most realistic and gripping shooter i've ever played. 12. where did i say i didn't "believe" in evolution? trust me, i am firmly in the evolution camp. I'm just saying they don't have to be mutually exclusive. I'm not blaming one side or the other, BOTH sides of this argument seem to think that they can't co-exist. You seem to imply that i can't "believe" in both? Why not? edited to add: I put "believe" in quotes because all this talk of "believing" in evolution is rather silly. you don't "believe" in science, it's a very thorough and established process for determining answers. "Belief" is left for faith and spirituality. so why can't we have both? I believe in god. I also am educated in the scientific method, understand how it works, and am enlightened by scientific discoveries. they just ARE. there's no "belief" about it. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  13. another thread about this...why do they have to be mutually exclusive? How about this. I'm a Christian. I'm a college-educated scientist/engineer. I believe that science provides and in fact is itself proof of God. It's one of the ways we draw closer to Him. As for anti-intellectualism, that's another thread, imho Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  14. Ran across a guy once at my former church who felt that if ALL of your activities weren't done to glorify God, then you shouldn't be doing them. Not so much that they were sinful if they didn't...just that he couldn't ever see skydiving as a way to possibly glorify God, so therefore it was a waste of my time. *shrug* Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  15. um, yes? Basically you said "fuck my kids or their kids, who the hell cares if they can breathe or have food to eat! it doesn't matter, as long as *I'm" good!" By the standard definition of the term, that's, um, pretty selfish. And we CAN stop it...but people with attitudes like yours are the reason we never even try. 16. another DIRECTOR/Explorer here. pretty accurate, actually. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  17. overpopulation is something that can not be stopped, so who cares if we realize it or not? some day the sun will get really big and engulf the earth too, but i'm not going to lose any sleep over it. i'll be dead before either one happens. it really doesn't make a difference if its 1, 2, or 1000 generations after i'm gone. How unselfish of you. I am quite sure your children or nephews and nieces or friends' children or grandchildren truly appreciate that attitude. 18. right now? seriously? I'd say stick the money in a short term money market fund or CD until the stock market settles down. Or look at bonds. I would say his money might be safer under his mattress right now than in the stock market. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

    WTF Bra

lol...agreed! I'm not that big, but there's other reasons i pretty much can't be bra-less and comfortable, mainly being that...well...certain areas of my body are somewhat...ah...shall we say...overly sensitive! 20. So why not provide a little guidance? tell me what scientific study/experiment/evidence WOULD prove or disprove it? Since the hundreds of things previously posted don't seem to do it, what WOULD? Do you see the conundrum? You want people to provide proof, yet it's never the kind you want to see. So how are we to know what you DO want to see unless you tell us? Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  21. I have asked it repeatedly and never once seen an answer to that question. Sure, i'll ask again. This time more specifically than ever so they can't hedge and insist they answered it. Rush and other anti-change advocates (on the issue of global warming and the environment, i mean), please, tell us a specific scientific experiment that would prove to you that yes, it is worth it and necessary to change NOW. Oh hell, it doesn't even have to prove it to you, it just would have make you think twice. Design an experiment for us that you would see done and tell us what results would make you rethink your "position" on this issue. You say nothing has been proven. Step up. propose something that WOULD prove it, in your mind. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

    The germ quiz

10/11 I really truly wish they would have put a question in there about overuse of antibiotics. I was happy to see a poster in my doctor's office about how colds and flus don't need antibiotics. Now if we can just get off this "disinfectant, antibiotic, germ-killiing" product spree, maybe we won't speed along the superbug =/ Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  24. Well, let's put it this way. My parents bought one when i was 10. I am now 33. It still runs perfectly and i don't think they've ever had it repaired, or had any problems with it. if you buy one, it's definitely pricey, but then again, you may never ever have to buy another vacuum in your life. 25. MIT has a Masters in Auto Repair? I listen to them on the radio, just have always tried to figure out that connection. no, they are mechanical engineers. MIT certainly has degrees in that. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
