Oops, just read Kevin's post about not pushing off from a balloon; goes to prove my inexperience. Doesn't stop you from presenting your chest and arching, trying to stay head-high. If you can't you just build up the speed and fly out of it. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

I've not done a balloon jump, wingsuit or not, but I have done a couple of wingsuit jumps from helicopters and half a dozen or so from big walls. The main issue with with still-air wingsuit jumps for the inexperienced is that you are likely used to stabilising yourself with your arms out in front/above you, but this is more tricky when your arms are restricted by the suit. To counter this, I favour having my arm wings extended but my leg wing collapsed (and tends to be bent back as well). Once I have some airspeed to work with, if I haven't gone head-low, I extend my legs and the lower wing and push down to level out. Of course, a good exit position is the best way to avoid going head-low. Like with a BASE exit, focus your eyes above the horizon, and push from the chest more upwards than outwards. Since one of the best things about jumping from a balloon, I would imagine, apart from the initial still-air, is the perception of falling relative to the balloon, so you might want to fall off backwards. Have you done much back flying? I haven't tried this, but I would guess trying to fall of flat backwards, woul dcause you to flip, so you might want to fall back bent at the waste, but with wings extended, and then slowly flatten out as the speed increases. I'm only getting 8 KB/sec on this download and I'm on a fairly fast link here. What are the other four getting? Le Roy, I thought you were on a T1? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

It was in the Uploads directory yesterday (which only the admins can see) and I dowloaded it, but I can only play it with the DivX player and it restarts after the first few seconds despite seeming to have the whole file. Either one of the other admins deleted it for the same reasons (Dave?) or it went missing when they tried to move it. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Tandem Masters: What is your favorite Otter/Caravan exit?
cpoxon replied to PhreeZone's topic in Safety and Training
Another one for the tandem forum! :-) Of the 64 tandems I've done, 14 have been from a Caravan and this is the method I've used. Being a low-time instructor, I like to be able to present myself square to the slipstream by pivoting on exit. Aren't the Otter and the Caravan two different beasts though? Isn't the door of an Otter significantly bigger (at least, higher?) than a Caravan? I'd be interested to know the exact dimensions if anyone has them (are the doors different in a Grand and regular Caravan?) Also, Otters have benches (and taller fuselages) which make it easier to get into a standing position for exit. Whereas in a Caravan you sit on the floor. I find it easier to shuffle along the floor of the caravan to the door, taking care to lift myself up (and therefore the bottom of the rig) so as not to snag any handles. When I set up in the door I check that my handles haven't been snagged and when I pivot out I also lift myself up so as not to catch the drogue on the edge of the door. The other more experienced instuctors do a mixture of this, floating exits and back lay-outs from a seated position. I've not done a tandem from an Otter but I have done the majority of my tandem's from a Let which is similar and has a pretty huge door. I like to do a standing, poised exit, so I can present to the slipstream on exit. I also done a few diving exits (still presenting to the slipstream, but head low). Now that I'm more experienced I'd like to try different exits like floating and lay-outs, but I think I'll wait until the Let returns next Spring. Oh, and I also have one Skyvan tandem exit, which I floated and was a lot of fun! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -

I've finally got around to uploading the segment about Felix "crossing the Channel" for the third programme in the Extremists series, that recently aired on Channel 4 in the UK (basically a shameless plug for Red Bull). This is at least a couple of months since it supposedly took place, therefore allowing them at lot more time, than the initial news reports, to include actual footage from the jump but there are still a lot of inconsistencies that have me wondering... Anyway, the video is up on skydivingmovies.com (21 MB requires Media Player) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

The intention was and still is, to put it on DVD, but there were some format (-/+R PAL/NTSC) issues so that has been delayed but we still intend to do it so let me know which format would be of interest. Will look at (S)VCD too. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

The Team Crank video is a compilation of jumps by numbers 782, 796, 802, 803, 806 and friends over the past couple of years in places such as Belgium, France, Italy, Norway, Russia, South Africa and the UK (running time approximately 45 minutes). It was our intention to send 20 NTSC videos to Bridge Day, via such British friends, to be sold by Rob and Kathy on their stand. Due to a monumental cock-up by the Royal Mail, as well our leaving it until the last possible minute, this will not now be happening. All may not be lost though since we have managed to send a PAL version of the taster and a couple of extracts (Belgium and Norway) from the tape for inclusion in the VideoFest on Friday(?) evening at the Holiday Inn, so long as the technical barrier of the PAL format can be overcome. I've also uploaded the taster (6.51 MB) to SkydivingMovies.com for those that aren't going to be at Bridge Day, or for those that can't wait! It's a shortened and updated version of the original Dead Air Dummies (45 MB) that has been on SkydivingMovies.com now for some time. That in itself has been tweaked and is included on the full tape. Advertising isn't allowed so this isn't an advert, but we've now got 20 NTSC tapes so if anyone is interested in one, drop me a line and we'll see what we can do. Have a good, safe time at Bridge Day! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Pulling tandem handles in wrong order

It didn't fire under the 99 but it did under the 86. Vertical speed under a 74 wasn't significantly higher raising the question of a canopy "terminal velocity". The article is by Troy Ketsdever on page 27 of the latest Skydiving (Issue #266). This was with an original Cypres though. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
