Projekt Ikarus I'm sorry, I'm not obsessed really!

Exit looks a bit higher than 1000ft but the opening does look low. Strange how there is no ground footage of that. What did your country's Skydiving and Aviation authorities have to say about the jump? streaming video (captured and uploaded to ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/BASE/s3-01item20.asf)

Which leads to Wannahves TV - Red Bull Mysteroius Felix and a streaming video (captured and uploaded to ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/BASE/s3-01item20.asf) of "Mysterious Felix".

Saturday's Tandem Quote Of The Day
cpoxon replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The student's reaction was the only thing I don't feel I was really prepared for when I imagined myself doing tandems. It is just the best thing. I find myself saying, "AND I get paid to do this?!" to them! Four more this weekend, bringing me to the grand total of 24. A weekend of firsts. My first thankyou letter (from my first student), my first puker (not very much and she had the bag in her hand before her first heave) and my first tandem tracking (the guy wanted to be "superman" and when I grabbed his hangs to swing them back he forgot about it and I had to summon the strength of Superman to move them!). Beer was bought :-) -
Not quite as good as getting a certain blonde female Langar jumper to take the ladder (used to board the Caravan) to the Let :-D Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Yes please. As a recently qualified Tandem Instructor I would like to see a separate forum and for the current Tandem threads to be moved to it. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Yeah, that's really what I meant. The stability of it on one's head in freefall. Worried about it slipping around. What brand was yours? ProTec? I'd like a chrome ProTec or Blokart :-)

I wear a large floppy jumpsuit with no booties. As I said in the helmet post, I have 20 "real" tandems under my belt. I wear the floppy jumpsuit because I'm a freeflier and that's what I'm used to. I also want to add to my surface area for more control. We are currently suffering, I mean enjoying, a heatwave here in the UK. I'd love to wear as little as possible but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable doing that until I have a few more under my belt, with regards to control in freefall. Some of the experienced tandem instructors have recommended booties to me for more control with the legs leaving the arms more free, but not being a belly flier I wonder if they'd do more harm than good? I'm thinking of getting a pair of BirdMan Pantz and wondering whether I could use them with tandems, but in these hot, no wind days, I'm sliding them in (more to save my back than anything - idea for another poll perhaps?) and don't want to ruin an expensive pair of trousers like Dave! The suit I use is older and I don't mind if it gets torn. One other thing, on our course we were recommended to wear jumpsuits as it appears more professional and it makes the student more comfortable when you ask them to wear one. I've worn a frap hat on all 20 of my tandems with real students (it's the legal minimum requirement in the UK, for the students also). In my previous 900 jumps, I'd never worn a frap hat (except when I went on the front of a couple of tandems for currency jumps). On my course I wore a full face (Oxygn) with the visor removed (as that is what I was used to when not wearing a camera as helmets are required in the UK) but I found it made it difficult to converse with the "student" so I switched to a frap hat when doing it for real. I'd like something with a bit more protection that also allows me to hear under canopy so I'm thinking about a half-shell. Does anyone know how well they hold up to freefall? Another issue is attaching an audible but that shouldn't be too difficult (I'm thinking cable tie a bracket between the straps that pass either side of the ear) There seems to be a lot of Tandem Instructor related threads recently, which as a newly qualified one I'm happy to see, but it wouldn't it be cool to have a separate Tandem forum for instructors? John mooted it before but nothing came of it. I wasn't interested then; I am now! :-) Edit to add: an experience instructor also recommended I go back to the full face since my geeking the camera was taking the focus away from the student in the video! I think he was joking...

Frap Hats More Dangerous Than Going Without A Helmet??
cpoxon replied to slotperfect's topic in Safety and Training
I've heard this before but I don't quite get it. Since most trauma will tend to be to a point (albeit blunt) then so it will be with a frap hat? Are you saying that there is something in the design of a frap hatthat actually directs and concentrates an impact from a larger area to a smaller one? Since the frap hat is not rigid and the ribs have compresable material in, how does that work? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -
That was Sibson's Ronnie O'Brien who released the reserve on Mike Smith's tandem (Richard Maynard was the student). I have it on video someone. Must try to dig it out and get it uploaded to skydivingmovies.com. Would aslo be interested to see if he pulled the reserve handle or RSL. Felix Baumgartner to Cross the Channel -- Press Release
cpoxon replied to quade's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've capped the two main news channel reports here in the UK and they're in a better format than the streaming ones you may have seen. I've uploaded them to skydivingmovies.com: BBC (5.81 MB) ITV (5.36 MB) Also, can anyone see a problem with the slider in the attached image that would have required Felix to hack it in two? Edit: fixed links...again -

The streaming video has now been updated to incorporate images from his exit and onboard cameras, including his opening and "the tangled cord". My favourite quote, "And now the massive publicity opeartion begins" Also a new diary style article on the BBC website. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -

Hmm, so nobody actually saw it then? :-) I hope he was carrying a GPS or visible on radar. I would be interested in seeing the data. Classic piece of journalism! What he actually said was, "On opening, I went directly into the opening with my legs so I had to cut my slider in pieces because it was hanging up in the lines, but I made it, which is great" Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -
