I guess it (Iraq) wasn't about oil after all
willard replied to akarunway's topic in Speakers Corner
Three of the top five oil companies in the world are not based in the US: BP, Shell, TOTAL, ExxonMobile, Chevron. Everyone's getting a piece. Who would you rather rebuild the infrastructure? China? Iran? Russia? Some project that Iran's exports will evaporate in the next 6-8 years. This arrangement will keep you warm in the winter, provide jobs as the talent re-emerges in Iraq, send kids to school, and instill a new stability (hopefully) in the country on a more positive model of development. Just curious....what reasons are given for Irans oil exports will dry up? Are their resources running out or will it be a political thing? Maybe some other reason? -
Sorry about the ankle. But you kept both hands on your ding-a-ling, right?

Think gas prices will go up if Iran get nuked?
willard replied to akarunway's topic in Speakers Corner
Gas prices will go up if this happens. Gas prices will go up if this doesn't happen. Will it go that far? I don't know, but I sure hope not. I find it hard to understand why they would consider nukes when they have other weapons that would work just as well without the international condemnation that would surely follow. -
Officer to be Court Martialled for refusing to go to Iraq
willard replied to Lucky...'s topic in Speakers Corner
Though I don't agree with his reasoning I do understand it. But that doesn't free him of the responsibilities he undertook when joining the Army. Regardless of whether or not the reasons behind overthrowing Hussein were real or falsified, the fact remains that our troops are there, they are there now, and they will be there until we figure out a way to get out of that screwed up mess without the whole country decaying into anarchy when we do leave. That being said he has a duty to follow orders given to him unless those orders are illegal. He will have a VERY hard time proving that his orders are illegal. I admire him for taking a stand, but his duty to his men, his unit, and his country outweigh any duty he may feel to his conscience. Just my $0.02 -

I figured that since you didn't know who recorded "My Din-A-Ling" you couldn't be very old at all.

There was a song my mom and dad played...called "My Ding-A-Ling" live version. To this day I haven't been able to find it I don't remember the guys' name who sang it. At the time I thought it was nasty. Would love to find it. My we are youthful, aren't we! That song is a classic, performed by none other the Chuck Berry himself.

...that define what our youth was like. For me it has to be "Gotta keep a runnin'" by The Godz. "But it feels so gooood!"

Funny...You should make this a sticky for newbies!!...and experienced!

Guilty as charged. -
1 year ago I thought that anyone who would jump out of a perfectly good airplane needed their head examined. Now that I have the first four jumps towards my "A" license done my thoughts have changed. Now I know that anyone who would jump out of a perfectly good airplane needs their head examined!

No offense taken. BTW, I've been told the Guinness is much better in Ireland but I've no first hand knowledge. Have you ever been there? If so, could you tell the difference?

So, did ya take down the holiday decorations yet?
willard replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
Two replies come to mind... 1. "What decorations?" 2."You're supposed to take them down?" -
Me? Hate alcohol? That could be, but since I love a pint of stout once in a while, as well as a good porter and an occasional splash of rum or even a bit of tequila on ice you would be hard pressed to prove it. No, I don't hate alcohol. In fact, I enjoy it. But what I do hate is people who have consumed enough to impair their ability to safely drive, yet drive anyway. As for this thread, I am done with it. I have repeatedly asked for you to show where the sociological benefits are for someone to drive drunk and you have offered nothing but a circular path back to the idea that you want to be able to legally drive while intoxicated without fear of being punished until you cause an accident. If you aren't happy with the way the laws are you are free to try to get them changed or move to a place where the laws, or lack of same, more closely resemble your ideals. As for myself, I will continue to do my drinking in a responsible manner and gladly offer my services as designated driver if asked. You see, drunk drivers are a threat to every other person on the highway and I chose not to contribute to that problem and try to help reduce the problem when I can. Others refuse to acknowledge the danger and recklessly contribute to it unless measures are put in place to stop them. One of these is DUI laws. No, they aren't perfect. But they stopped you. And that's the way it is, Saturday, January 6th, 2007. Goodnight

I have no intent on flaming you. Your post was informative, to the point, and presented accurate statistics and your interpretation of them. I think I'll have a Guinness myself.

Simple Give them all a frakkin piss test in Congress/// like so many other jobs require. OK, I will break my "no responses to amazon" statement to say here. Right on!!! I agree!! I'd be all for it. Only problem is, the ones to get tested are the ones who would have to require it. Congress has never been very good at policing their own.

No law is telling you that you have to hire a taxi, only that you are not allowed to drive on public highways after your BAC reaches a predetermined level. Whether you hire a taxi, call a friend, walk home, or stay where you are is entirely up to you. Agreed. At least these people take their responsibility to society seriously. In what way? Please share this information with the rest of us. DUI laws are not in place due to what you perceive as a hatred of alcohol, but as a measure to deter those who would drink and drive from doing so. The laws have been proven to be quite efficient in detering drunk driving. You yourself admitted that you don't drive when you suspect your BAC is anywhere near the legal limit due to being subjected to the penalties if caught. Once again, I challenge you to show where there is any benefit to society by allowing people to drive while intoxicated. While you are at it, you can show us where these laws distort the economy and damage it. Since you seem to be concerned only with the financial implications of DUI laws and not the cost in terms of lives lost or destoyed, maybe you should read up on the financial impact that drunk drivers have each year just in the U.S. The cost in lost days at work, medical bills, etc. runs in the billions.

You mean like a cross between a BMW and a Hummer is a Bummer? Seriously, though, they are a step in the right direction from an environmental standpoint, but they have a long way to go before they have a substantial impact.

In a word...yes.

I just finished reading the book and it brought back so many memories of dogs I have had over the years. One dog in particular kept coming to mind, a Brittany that I took in as a rescue case. Former show dog, wonderful confirmation, steadfast loyalty, but dumber than a bag of hammers. He knew to come and sit, but "stay" was one command he never got the hang of. Until the day he died he interpreted "stay" as "Ok, I can follow but I have to keep my butt on the ground." He would follow me, dragging his ass like he had worms, until I told him to heel. Then he would resume a normal posture. Damn I miss that dog.

Drug abuse and dependency among politicians goes back as far as you care to track it. The Greeks and Romans had problems. U.S.Grant was an alcoholic. Jack Kennedy was addicted to pain killers and other prescription drugs. The problem knows no party lines. I don't like the idea of people making important decisions on our behalf being strung out like they were still at Woodstock, but I haven't a clue as to what we can do to prevent it that hasn't been tried.

I wonder what they would do if you had a sizable refund due and didn't file? Anybody willing to give up their refund this year to find out?
