Steel doesn't burn it MELTS. And it depends upon the TYPE of steel. >http://www.cowtown.net/mikefirth/techspec.htm#MELTINGP The three main ingredients required for combustion are fuel, oxygen, and heat. If oxygen is present along with a fuel combustion will occur when the ignition temperature is reached. Ignition temperature is dependent upon several variables which include, but are not limited to, the materials properties, surface area, density, and composition. Don't think steel can burn? Take a match to a piece of steel wool. Better yet, talk to anyone who has made a living using an oxy-acetylene torch.

Sorry, couldn't watch the whole thing....was laughing too hard! Is this the same group that is now claiming the Titanic was sunk by a nuke? (Saw it in a tabloid at the market.) I would find that to be much more believable. Think about this...If, as you say, this was all planned, then why did they go to all the trouble of imploding the buildings into nice neat (relatively) piles? And why fly the planes into the buildings so far off the ground? If you want to give the impression that the planes brought them down, you fly them into the lowers levels and drop the buildings on their sides. That would be what most would expect to see happen and would avoid all the wannabe experts trying to convince everyone that this was somehow a giant government coverup.

I buy used when possible. At Ohio State there is a web site run by students where used books can be bought, sold, or traded for less than bookstore prices. There may be something similar at your school. Borrowing from a library is also a viable means, as is borrowing from friends. Sharing of some notebooks is possible. Lab notebooks usually have 3-4 times as many pages as needed. Share the cost of these with a classmate and devide it up. Two situations I have got caught in, had no way of avoiding, and HATED when it happened was buying a book that will be replaced after that quarter/semester. The bookstores won't buy 'em back and won't inform you of the situation when you purchase. The other is poor quality. $160 for a calculus text just to have the bindings fall apart after a month. Everyone had the same problem yet neither the bookstore nor the publisher would replace them. I know it sucks big time, but high book prices and being nickel & dimed to death with fees is a part of student life. Adapt, improvise, and overcome!

Um dude, in war winning IS everything. Unless you are satisfied with the outcome of coming in second. Right on! I searched all through the web and didn't find a single video clip or even a photo of the Japanese parading around after the surrender shouting, "We got second! We got second!"

44 years old, 3rd year back in college, and they call me a "mature non-traditional student". I actually prefer what most classmates call me...."old man". Political correctness attempts to minimize the diversity that is the strength of our society.

Sounds like an abscessed hair folicle (sp). I agree...pics would be nice.

I don't know if this has appeared here before but if it has...here it is again. In Praise of Women Over 30 Here is a piece written by Andy Rooney (Reporter on CBS' 60 minutes) ... When he's right, he's right: Andy Rooney says, "As I grow in age, I value women who are over 30 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why: A woman over 30 will never wake you in the middle of the night to ask, "What are you thinking?" She doesn't care what you think. If a woman over 30 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do. And it's usually something more interesting. A woman over 30 knows herself well enough to be assured in who she is, what she is, what she wants and from whom. Few women past the age of 30 give a damn what you might think about her or what she's doing. Women over 30 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it. Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated. A woman over 30 has the self-assurance to introduce you to her women friends. A younger woman with a man will often ignore even her best friend because she doesn't trust the guy with other women. Women over 30 couldn't care less if you're attracted to her friends because she knows her friends won't betray her. Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 30. They always know. A woman over 30 looks good wearing bright red lipstick. This is not true of younger women or drag queens. Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 30 is far sexier than her younger counterpart. Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off you are a jerk if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her. Yes, we praise women over 30 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart,well-coiffed hot woman of 30+, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year-old waitress. Ladies, I apologize. Andy Rooney Edited to add the following... "This item was not penned by Andy Rooney; it is an embellished version of a piece created by Frank Kaiser, a columnist whose Suddenly Senior articles are published on his web site and syndicated to a variety of newspapers across the U.S."

White House forbids former aide's critical op-ed

Same thing every administration for the last 200 years has done. No more, no less. -
One day a small ape-like mammal climbed down from the safety of it's tree and walked out across the African plain upright. 300,000 generations later....voila!

Whoever told you that knew not of what he spoke. A licensed dealer is required to have a "yellow form" filled out by the prospective buyer on which the buyer affirms that they are not a felon, drug addict, illegal alien, etc. No form=no sale. A private seller, however, is not required to ask but can be and, in more than one case, has been held partially responsible for crimes committed by a felon to whom he had sold a firearm as well as being charged with illegal transfer of a firearm. You are not only within your rights to ask but would be prudent to do so. If a potential buyer has a problem with that then it would be wise to stay clear and refuse to sell. I agree with your assessment of someone who would take enjoyment from thinking they had found a "loophole" by which they could sell to someone who otherwise would be unable to purchase a firearm. The sad fact is, the states and feds are always passing new gun laws but provide no financing to enforce them. These laws then inevitably fail to slow the rise in crime leading to the thinking that even more laws are needed.
-
FWIW, in most states, convicted felons are prohibited from owning, buying or selling guns. Not like that stops them. But it's unlikely a convicted felon desiring a gun will go the route of submitting a form to the government asking for permission. It is Federal law that anyone convicted of a felony punishable by one year or more imprisonment (regardless of actual sentence given or served) is prohibited from even touching a firearm or ammunition unless granted an exemption by a Judge. Unforunately this is one of those laws that is seldom enforced.

Should there be a televised Christmas excecution of Saddam?
willard replied to vortexring's topic in Speakers Corner
Publicity is what Saddam wants. He wanted to be executed by firing squad since it is more honorable (in his eyes). He should be hanged in private with as few witnesses as needed and with no fanfair at all. Deny him the attention he so desperately craves. -
Sure GW sucks. But it coulda been worse....Gore or Kerry could have won. Or Hillary (God forbid). But seriously, two points to consider in any presidential race... 1: Anybody intelligent enough to actually be a good president is smart enough to stay the hell away from politics, and... 2: Why would anyone vote for someone who is so arrogant to think they are the best person out of 300 million to lead this country ???

It seems where ever you turn these days someone is being proclaimed a "hero". But just what is a hero? Sports stars? Public servants? Are we somehow degrading what a true hero is by slapping the title onto anyone who saves a kitten from being deep-fried in a New York resturaunt? Your thoughts please.

Quality, price, and the way it feels in hand. Plus a Sig points almost as nicely as a 1911. 9mm are cheaper to shoot, recoil less, and generally have a larger capacity. A .40 and, my favorite, a .45, push a bullet that weighs up to twice that of a 9mm and leaves a much larger wound channel. Being a relatively low velocity family of firearm pistol projectiles stop (kill) by blood loss (unless major damage to the central nervous system occurs). Virtually any situation a handgun may be called upon for defense will be over in seconds and more than 6-7 shot capacity would never be used. The situation most likely will also not allow a carefully aimed shot, but rather a point-pull type shot at center of mass, a situation where bigger is always better. When trying different guns, try this (with the cooperation of the rangemaster, of course). Tape a white target app. 12" square onto the target frame. Cover the gun sights with black tape. At a range of 20 to 25 feet, have the rangemaster turn off all the lights and shine a small flashlight on the target. By just pointing your firearm at the target, squeeze off 3 or 4 shots. This is a good way to find how well a particular gun points for you. Each person will find they have a certain grip angle that points best for them. But hey!

First those poor Monks find out that after centuries of remaining celebate they find out there was a typo and the word was actually celebrate, and now this.

As I am sure you have already learned, the only way to become and stay proficient with a handgun is practice, and lots of it. Unfortunately the cost of ammo for a .40 or .45 limits the time most of us can spend at the range. With that in mind I will offer the same tidbit I always do when asked a similar question...buy two guns. A good quality .22 semi-auto costs app. the same as 1000 rounds of ammo for the big bores and, quite honestly, is more fun to shoot. The model I currently enjoy is a Ruger MkII. This allows you to spend time on the fundamentals of breathing, grip, sight picture, stance, and trigger pull without concerning yourself with such thoughts as recoil and the fact that each time you pull the trigger it costs you 25-35 cents. For a big bore sidearm I have always been partial to Mr. Brownings design of 1911, those made by Springfield Armory in particular. In a .40 the Sig 226 &229 are nice , and the new kid on the block Smith & Wesson M&P looks and handles like a winner.

Hmmm.....imagine the look on the Judges face when he confuses the two!

"We have a man's man in custody right now, by the name of Saddam Hussein." I assume, and hope, that remark was intended as sarcasm. Hussein was and is nothing more than a coward.

"...anyone have a "so there I was" story for that day?? " In a town near where I grew up lived a quiet man. He never talked much about his days in the war, and very few knew his story until he was interviewed by a reporter and his story was published in a local paper several years ago. The brief version is that he served aboard and was on the USS Arizona when she was sunk at Pearl. He was then reassigned to a carrier, the USS Yorktown. Six months later, at the Battle of Midway, the Yorktown was sunk by repeated Japanese torpedo attacks. He survived this atack as well and was reassigned again to another ship, this time a destroyer (whose name slips my memory). This ship was also sunk during a battle in the Pacific, the sailor again survived, and he was finally assigned to shore duty for the remainder of the war. Undoubtedly the Navy was having trouble finding men who would sail with him! To help visualize what happened 65 years ago. One period for each American who lost their life on December 7, 1941 at pearl harbor. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...
