  1. I once saw someone base an ultralight from 300 feet at a midwestern DZ. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. Well, surely you think it should be actionable when a company sells a dangerous product, or you would support the open sale of fully automatic assault weapons, wouldn't you? Or, maybe the issue is really just varying degrees of 'dangerous' ofset by the amount of assumed risk? I find that most people who complain about the McDonalds coffee case really don't understand how profound the negligence was. Alternately, would you prefer that instead of allowing case by case lawsuits, the government overly regulate every part of life? (off topic tangent)It's fundamentally rediculous to complain about lawsuits. It would be much smarter to complain about verdicts. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  5. Has anyone ever done any quantitative analysis on the benefits of a soft reserve handle? Is it proven to be less hazardous in freeflying? I ask only because while listening to a jumper get chewed out for not having one by a skygod, it occurred to me that among the jumpers I know, the idea that having one is a no-brainer is essentially rote knowledge. It seems like nobody really can explain WHY one is more snag-resistant then the others, the implication is always that it should be abundantly clear, and anybody who questions their value is obviously not as smart as the rest. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  6. If people could learn how to skydive by reading, we'd screw this whole first jump course thing, and just hand out a manual. I would caution you to think about what you want to take away from these boards. You're going to learn an aweful lot in your first jump course, but you'll manage because you'll learn by listening, watching, practicing, and yes - reading. These forums were not created to teach someone how to skydive. Try to keep your expectations reasonable. Just a thought, _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. Quite frankly, I'd be surprised if anybody visited the museum period... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  8. In the spring, I've got an appointment to jump gear CONSIDERABLY older then me, too... Strangely, I'm looking forward to it. No, I don't think a 'cut-off' date works. If the gear is good, let them jump. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  10. Here's my thoughts. Corrections, Opinions, sly jokes always appreciated. I even grabbed a few frames off the video to illustrate my points. Take a look at the file called "TreeTop.jpg". You're a good 50 feet off the ground, and you're already starting your flare. Flaring a canopy isn't like breaking a car, starting early will NOT help you out. You also appear to be doing a very slow gradual flare. This isn't going to help you. You'll have better luck if you do a stronger flare much lower to the ground. In the file called FlareDone.jpg, you're a good six feet off the ground. You have absolutely no flight left in your canopy. It's COMPLETELY stalled. From here, you're essentially falling DOWN. Remember you want to stall your canopy right at ground zero, not ground zero + 6. Lastly, in the file called 'EvenFlare.jpg', you can see clearly that your toggles are very uneven as you finally touch down. This is what is knocking you over. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. Quite a few of us shop at dbuys.com - great prices and very good service. I ordered mine at 5:30pm monday, and it was on my doorstep at 8:00am the next morning... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. http://www.ftc.gov/bc/compguide/illegal.htm A definition of price fixing by the FTC. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. If in fact this is true, it would be simple to end - just notify the FTC, and ask them to lay charges. Having 'minimal price' limits enforced on dealers is a clear violation of anti-trust laws in the US. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  14. Designs change. You're comparing a 7 year old canopy to a 12 year old one. The only people how can tell you definitivey if there's a difference is the factory. Call them. It may be that they were simply TSO'd to a different standard, and are constructed the same way. Or, it may be that they are constructed differently and one is stronger. Ask the manufacturer. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. I made that mistake... Moved to Cleveland for a job that paid nearly double my last one, but ended up leaving after a year. I found the city depressing, and moved to Chicago. I hope you have better luck. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  16. If I am going to spend that much money on cutom work, it is going to be done to my satisfaction. If I was willing to settle for something that looks 'sorta' what I wanted, I would've bought one off that rack. That said, I also work in customer service, (albeit, corporate customer service) and I know how important it is to keep your cutomers happy. Mirage should, and will be more then happy to fix it for you. I'm the kind of person that would look at that rig, and every time see the mistake they made. It would stand out, glarind at me. Give Mirage the chance to make things right. That might involve replacing the center panel, or it might involve a few t-shirts. Don't you not have a main yet anyways? You can't jump it anyways, right? So, sending it back for a few weeks wouldn't keep you from jumping, would it? Also, I disagree with phreezone. It should not take them 3-6 weeks to fix. If it does take that long, there's something very wrong with their customer service. Fixes due to their error should get first priority. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  17. Why dude, Cleveland sucks. Anyways, the closest DZ is Cleveland Sport Parachute Club is the closest, have that 'club' feel, and fly 'club' planes. (read: last time I was there, a piston twin-bo, and twin beach). Aerohio is abit further drive (i guess it depends where you live in the city thought). Aerohio is a profesionally run DZ, with top notch instructors, beautiful planes, etc. Give them both a try, and pick for yourself. For me, Once I went to Aerohio I never went back to Parkman (cspc). _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  18. Yes, I don't think I'll ever forget sitting in a classroom, roughly in the sixth grade, proudly watching a the next takeoff. We actually had a former astronaut in the class explaining what was going on. We really didn't understand what was going on when it blew up, we weren't old enough to connect the dots between the puff of white smoke and an explosion. The teachers and the astronauts were useless, they were speachless. They were staring at the screen in shock, we were staring at them wondering why they stopped in mid-speech. Slowly, it dawned on us that something very badly had gone wrong. I never would've imagined we'd be seeing the same thing happen again. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  20. Chicagoland Skydiving Center - 100 jumps @$16. Skydive Chicago, assorted specials based on when in the year you buy the package - $13 up to $16 for a hundred jump package. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. Put me down again for a definate MAYBE! Seriously, I can't plan nearly that far in advance. I'll see what I can do to make the finances work, but it'll depend more on the work schedule, and I can't really control that. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

    Gasoline origin

This is a bit of a misnomer. The US only buys about 10% of its supplies from arab countries. Yes, seriously. About 30% from Canada About 30% from Mexico about 20% from venezuela About 10% from the gulf region about 10% domesic and "other". What am I saying here? Am I saying it's all a big conspiracy? That whenever politicians talk about gulf gas they're feeding us horseshit? No. The world gas market is largely integrated. While the US doesn't buy a lot of Gulf gas, the world as a whole certainly does. Most of the Gulf gas ends up going to Europe. My point here, is that because the gas market is a world market, supply and demand being what it is means that even though gulf-gas doesn't actually end up in the US, the amount of oil coming out of the ground in that part of the world seriously impacts the prices Americans pay for gas - even gas that comes from other parts of the world. Generally it's a bad idea to pass on those long rambling emails that always seem to be going around. They're usually wrong. Life is never that simple. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  24. There is a long list of people who've decided that Sony's are two expensive, bought something else, and regret later. There's a very good reason the entire industry has standardized on Sony, and it's not because we're brand snobs. If you buy anything other then Sony, you will not be able to use a Cam-eye, you MAY not be able to fire-wire. You will have dificulty in buying a pre-made helmet mount, you'll most likely have to make your own. You won't find anyone at the DZ you can borrow a remote from when you forget it at home. Personally, I have seen some very weird stuff happen to JVC cameras during opening sequence. Save up until you can afford a Sony. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  25. Absolutely no question, it's your loss. Some packers charge an extra buck and call it a 'guaranteed pack job'. In this case, it's questionable. My understanding is the extra buck covers a possible repack, plus sometimes a masseuse showing up at your tent at WFFC. I've never heard of a main getting replaced in this scenario. If the packers offers "packing insurance" - like Packing Kathy, I can see there might be an argument to be made. If the don't, or you didn't ask about their guarantees beforehand - I can't see how you could possibly expect the packer to cover it. I frequently pay packers, and I accept all the risks that come with that. If I didn't want the risk, I'd pack for myself. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
