  1. pretty much, yeah. I jump a relatively highly loaded stiletto. I have had opening where toggles come undone. A jumper aware of whats going on during opening should be able to get control of a canopy before it spins up from a popped toggle. On larger canopies, you can just grab the other toggle - er, rather - grab BOTH toggles so you don't need to think about which one. On smaller, more loaded canopies it's smart to pull on the riser on the side that popped, to control the spin as it starts up. I've never chopped from line twists, wether caused by a popped toggle or not. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. I'm getting search odities again, simple results not showing up. Time to rebuild the index, again? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  3. Ice storms really are just another form of Natural Disasters. I was living in Ottawa, Canada in 97, an ice storm hit, took out enough power lines to knock out power to Ottawa, Montreal and parts of upstate NY. Parts of Montreal was without power for over 3 weeks, in the middle of February. Steel structures that are build innexpensively (like antenas and high tension power corridors) are prime targets for destruction during ice storms. Unless a particularly nasty storm hits - like the one that took out central Canada in 97 - it's cheaper to build innexpensive structures and pay for the odd one that falls over then to build them all properly. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. So you do think beginners should jump fully eliptical canopies? Stilettos? Crossfires? Heatwaves? Cobalts? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. Stop arguing so much. Altimeter manufacturers advertise accuracy to within +-500 feet when they're new. Being at 1000 feet off is entirely possible, and I imagine it's surprisingly common. I've seen my Suunto watch and Alti-3 700 feet different! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  6. I dunno what thread you're reading, but I'm reading one called "Cobalt Canopies", which seems to me, is talking about the Atair Cobalt, one which IS fully eliptical. Moreover, it's a fully eliptical canopy (biggest size, 170) who's manufactuer is on the recored HERE, preaching its use as a STUDENT, FIRST JUMP canopy. And you're coming to his defence, whether you know it or not. Context, dear F1... Context! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. Do you think that sentiment lasted? As you look around to your friends, your coworkers, your family: do you see people who are "on alert"? Or, did you see people who thought the extent of their patriotic duty was buying duct tape and plastic sheeting? I also disagree that the changes made by government are innefective. Total Information Awareness - in all its nastiness, WILL give the FBI and the CIA all it needs to find whoever they want. It's just unfortunate that these types of initiatives completely destroy the values this country is supposed to stand for. Thank god, for us, that TIA seems to be stalled. It would've helped with terrorists, but also would've made this a country not worth living in. The government changes DO something. It's just that as a side effect, they also just do exactly what the forefathers thought they were running away from. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  10. Not at all. In fact, the CEO and CMO (marketing) of my company use my videos in their sales presentations, frequently. But then we're a tiny little struggling startup, and me jumping from planes is tame compared to the business descisions we take daily. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. probably me. I have a horendously crappy laptop as my primary computer, and the keyboard is completely useless. It makes writing code for a living rather interesting. That, and I frequently post while drinking. ;) _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. Why? Because you don't trust her? I am madly in love with my girlfriend. I trust her completely. Likewise, I know that she loves me like nothing else, and she trusts me completely. Neither one of us would ever check up on the other, because we're completely honest and upfront about everything and everyone in our lives. She knows I talk to my ex-gf every few weeks, she knows I'm friends with people I've been interested in the past. This doesn't bother her because she knows I love her like there's no tomorow. Likewide, she tells me about, and keeps in contact with some of her ex's. it doesn't bother me at all because I know how much she loves me. You want to check up on her because you don't trust her. Either a: there's something going on in which case you should dump her, or b: there's nothing going on in which case you're being an ass for chasing her down. You don't trust her, and you need to trust the person you love. Get rid of her and go find someone you can trust. Either that, or check your suspicion and jealousness at the door the next chance you get. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  14. "So damn close, I almost spocked him!" That would've been my fault.... Zennie spocked me just a short time later when I was down for the Aggie Casa boogie. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. I disagree. I believe firmly that Amerians are obsessed with the opinions of celebrity, you only have to look at the once popular show "Politically Incorrect", which was a political talk show where the commentary came from hollywood. Before that show shot itself in the foot, it was one of the most highest rated current events shows. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  19. Eeek! Hold the phone! Numbers like ".5" and ".6" are COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS!!! Manufacturers have NOT come to a standard definition in terms of what these numbers actually mean! In some cases, they mean different things even within the same manufacturer!!! For example, LtDiver's Sony .6 is about 30 degrees wider then my Kenko .5. Do you believe that? We got witnesses! Also, within the Kenko line of lenses, there's cheap ones, and there's expensive ones. The expensive .5's are again about 20% wider then the cheap .5's. The wide discrepancies in the meaning of ".X" numbers is so bad, I really think we need to start recomending lenses by model number. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. Both canopy fabrics are very good. Both will last far longer then you care about, you'll ditch the canopy long before either fabric wears out. PD, Precision, and Icarus canopies are made with Dupont SolarMax, which are then coated with a product called "SoarCoat" to give it it's zero perosity property. Canopies made by PISA, Aerodyne, and Cobalt are made with a fabric of South African origins called Gelvenor. The Gelvenor fabric is treated in a different way then the DuPont fabric. Both treatments yeild a fabric that will maintain near zero-perosity over a long period of time. The DuPont fabric is very slippery when it is new, which makes it very dificult to pack if you're not used to it.. That slipperiness will wear off after about 50 packjobs. As you travel around to different dropzones, you'll find people at each dropzone that adamently insist that one fabric is better then the other, and that you're a fool for buying a canopy made with the wrong fabric. After you year these arguments made over both fabrics a few times, you'll start to get bored with the whole debate. Neither fabric has ever been shown to last longer then the other. Neither fabric is "better" then the other. South African Gelvenor fabric IS easier to pack when new. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. It really depends on what kind of training it is. Putting static line students out without altimeters is more common then you would think. By definition, static line malfunctions happen instantaneously, so you only have to teach your students to deal with the emergency as soon as it presents itself. In static line progressions, being aware of specific altitudes only becomes relevant once the student is practicing longer delays. Likewise, a first jump tandem "student" does not have a great need for an altimeter. This is even more true if the jumper does not plan on continuing afterwards. If you're talking AFF - well, I can't imagine an AFF jump without the student having one. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  23. I agree completely, actually. US leaders should be leaders, not followers. The problem here is that while bush keeps trying harder and harder to lead people one way, more and more people are turning against him. To me, the definition of a leader is a person that people follow. It seems, Bush is turning out to be a very poor leader. Nobody's following. History will tell if this path proves to be an honorable one. So far, my bets are against that. On one hand I do admire Bush for following his beliefs, but like most Americans I also question his motives for doing so. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  24. The US system is way too often based on public opinion, sadly I think Bush is no exception then those who came before him. That wasn't why I posted it, I like somebody else here pointed out, Bush doesn't read the forums. I offered the numbers to those here who seem to be arguing quite loudly how we MUST go into war, and to those who're saying that sending our soldiers out to die is somehow the only patriotic thing to do. Fortunately, it seems most Americans disagree with both sentiments. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
