For those AFFI's jumping with a side mount setup with their students... What type lens and camera are you using and is working well for you? Thanks for your help... Miami

So using the method I talked about above it looks like my .42 and my .3 are both actually giving me a field of view of about .407. This is with the lenses mounted on a pc110, face of the lens 3ft from the wall, the width of the picture without a lens of 24in, width of the picture with the .3 of 59in. Anyone care to input as to whether that is the right way to figure the field of view? Also does anyone have the black eye (.25), preferably mounted on a pc110, and have any idea what the actual field of view of it is? Thanks, Miami

Well what ever it is... I was going off of the idea that a telephoto being 2X magnification makes everything 2X as big, therefore .3X magnification would make everything .3 times as big. But shouldn't the field of view be at least a little close to what they say it is? And how do you calculate that field of view? Very frustrating... Miami

So I went and got a .3 from Way Cool (the red eye). Mounted it on my PC110, everything looked good. Decided to throw my .42 made by Bower (cheap-o) that I normally use on my TRV17 for tandems on the 110 to see just how much wider the .3 is. Well, it isn't. They are exactly the same. Now I know different lenses measure differently, and I would assume my nice new expensive lens is much closer to its stated magnification than my cheap older one, but how the hell do you tell what the exact magnification really is? Here's what I'm thinking to figure that out... Take the camera without lens, place it a certain distance away from the wall, measuring from the wall to the face of the lens. Measure the width of the wall captured in the lens. Then put the wide angle lens on, place the camera the distance away from the wall needed so the face of the lens is the same distance away from the wall as before and measure the width of the wall captured. Divide the first measurement by the second and you get the magnification. Is that right? And then on another note...anyone had any experience with the black eye or black eye X? Thanks for the help... If you have a friend in the military you can pick up a 300d with that kit for $749, no tax and no shipping charge. Aafes.com is for military only and has good deals here and there. Same place has the 10D (body only) for $1199 and the 20D with the same 18-55mm as the 300D for $1499. Edit to add: They also have the Nikon D70 with an 18-70mm for $1199. Hope this helps... Miami

I second that... Gold Coast was my home for a long time. I am very eager to hear about how it went. Mike is no stranger in the courtroom, I have confidence in his abilities in there. Miami

Very interesting...learn something new every day. Thanks for the info guys. Miami

What was the video quality like? Hehe, don't hold your breath...I wouldn't spend my money on a JVC for myself... Miami

Thats what I figured. Eventually though you would think they could come out with something similar to this that would work for us. Miami

Well yea, thats a given...but what if Sony made something similar to this...would the hard drive be able to withstand opening shock without scratching the piss out of the disk? And when's the next B3? The last one kicked ass! Miami
-
Anyone had an opportunity to play with one of these? Any opinions about how a hard drive would hold up to the rigors of jumping? Miami

Same here, I picked up three 300-qrc's from this guy for $125. You can usually get a single one for around $40 in his other auctions. Hope this helps... Miami

Has any TM ever taken a paraplegic on a tandem before?
Miami replied to TALONSKY's topic in Instructors
We had a quad at Gold Coast that we took on 25 tandem jumps back in '97...became the first quad to get his restricted A license. What worked best for us was to tape his thighs together a few inches above the knees and tape his ankles to the TI's ankles, with the bottom of the TI's feet a few inches below the passengers. Found after the first jump when his arms came loose that they did not need to be secured...they just naturally went to the proper position. His medical conditions got too severe for him to continue jumping, when he passed away his mother requested we take his ashes up for a final jump. Mike Mandel was his name...we called him MadDog. It has closed down unfortunately. Just didn't have enough business is what it really boiled down to...had nothing to do with the crw incident. I was working there, one of 4 employees, and I think the final nail in the coffin was when 3 of us got injured (all non-skydiving...one motorcycle wreck, one rolled ankle, one broken arm) and could not jump for a while. They do still say they are going to host special events but I haven't heard anything yet. Miami

I have had line twists on both my 21 and 27 loaded at 2.9-3:1 and have never had to chop them (knocking on wood as well). Each time I had line twists the canopies flew straight and there was no problem kicking out. It's all about having the risers even. Edit to add...about 1000 crossbraced jumps and line twists 3 times, once on the 27 (3-4 twists) and twice on the 21 (1-2 twists each time). Hope this helps... Miami

I would consider anything over the manufacturers recommended suspended weight to be heavily loaded. Miami

The only thing that comes to mind that fits that description is the FFX that is no longer made by 2kcomposites. There was one in the classifieds a while back...it might be a stretch but if you were looking for one you could post a wanted add for one there. Hope this helps... Miami
