  1. You mean it wasn't Al Gore!!??? Tim Berners-Lee "only" invented the World Wide Web (the most popular application on the Internet besides email), so Al can still claim that Internet in general if he wants. You might want to check out Stiff, by Mary Roach. Excellent and funny (while remaining respectful) book about what happens to our bodies after we die.
  2. Uhhh...I'm really not sure where the attitude is coming from. I'm just asking questions. I feel pretty much the same way as JP. The only right you or I have is to ask the operator, and if we don't like the answer (or lack thereof), we can leave.
  3. That wireless router also has four wired ports, so you can plug the desktop right into it.
  4. I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday, except it was my right hand. I got out of it by un-velcroing my glove and yanking my hand out, then kicking out of the line twists. I guess I'm going to have to stop making a habit out of grabbing my risers on opening. When I felt my hand get caught as the lines started to twist, my first thought was "please don't start spinning." I got lucky and it flew stable while I worked things out. I'm still trying to figure out what I should have done if it had turned into a spinner. The best I can come up with is to cut away, hope I clear the main, then go to my reserve. Not really a satisfying solution.
  5. I agree. The IT department that I work for sells old equipment on eBay on a regular basis. I have the records from over 100 sales, sometimes the only difference being the reserve or lack thereof (experiments at the company's expense ), to back me up. People just don't want to fuck around with "feeling out" the reserve when there is another guy selling a similar scanner or router or ham radio without one.
  6. I just don't see how this is possible, even if everybody is perfectly honest. We've been busted for incorrect grips that we didn't notice in freefall. Also, although I can guess, I can't tell you exactly when we hit 35 seconds and what point we were on when it happened. Not to mention, if it's an NSL meet where the scores are used to calculate national rankings, the meet shouldn't count. It just wouldn't be fair to teams in other leauges that are scored by the book.
  7. The FDA actually has a document called the "Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed Per Eating Occasion", which lists water at 8 fl oz. This page explains how serving sizes are calculated from that list.

    Disc Golf

Don't say Frisbee boy, do you wanna get sued? There's a course right down the street from me. I play a couple rounds a week. Only own one disc, which makes the serious guys cringe ("Dude, you need a driver and a putter, minimum"). Unfortunately, about a month after the 9 holes were installed complaints forced the park district to remove two holes. The neighbors insist that it brought troublemakers, but as far as I could tell it kept the problem kids away by bringing foot traffic to an essentially abandoned park. Can't drink beer in the woods when people are always walking by. Anyway, only having seven holes doesn't bother me too much, but it keeps the experienced players away.
  9. Bonehead Composites sells a chincup assembly (cup, two ladder straps, and some bolts 'n stuff) for $65.
  10. PD claims that an F111/ZP hybrid or all F111 Lightning can be deployed at terminal.
  11. It's an art exhibit, so probably not. Info and video here.
  12. It's actually in London, but yeah, I'd use it if I had the chance.
  13. I'm planning on showing up late on Friday (probably too late to jump), doing the 4-way meet on Saturday, and maybe sticking around until Sunday.
  14. I'll tell you what I'd do, man - two chicks at the same time, man. (movie reference difficulty: easy)
  15. The last I heard about the situation was a message on the CRW mailing list that the WFFC was still looking for an organizer. The CRW section of the load organizers list at freefall.com has disappeared sometime in the last couple of months. Last year there was a little (very little, it seemed) unofficial organizing at the CRW tent. So I'm not counting on anything official, but I'm bringing my hook knife just in case.
  16. What units are those numbers in? None of miles/hr, kilometers/hr, feet/s, or meters/s make sense. The first three are all impossibly slow*, and meters/s is really fast (170-ish miles/hr). I had the same problem when I was starting out, and I've seen it in other people. I would have no trouble getting down, but once I shifted my attention from getting to the formation to taking grips I would relax my arch and float out. The solution for me was to practice, practice, practice. I'd be willing to bet that you are doing the same thing (*disclaimer* but of course it could be something completely different, take my advice with a grain of salt as I hold no ratings, talk to your instructors, blah blah). * Ok, so 87 mph is probably achievable without a wingsuit, but most likely not without an extremely baggy suit and a lot of work.

    How far is it....

    Just under 30 miles.
  18. My log book might be +1. I know I bought 15 jump tickets at Rantoul last year. I know I left with zero. I remember thinking I was short one ticket at one point (lost it or something), but I think I was just confusing myself. I'm pretty sure I did the jumo, so I put 15 in my logbook. Otherwise, I check with manifest when I cash out at the end of the day, so I know that's accurate.
  19. O'Hare is about 140 miles away, Midway is 115, Bloomington is 60. Champaign is a little under 30 miles. How are you planning on getting to the convention? If you are hitching a ride, Champaign would probably be your best bet. O'Hare and Midway obviously have car rentals available, as does Champaign. I'm not sure about Bloomington.
  20. T-Mobile will sell you one of these, which will enable you to get online with your laptop anywhere that your T-Mobile phone works. It is only for Windows, it is pretty expensive, and it isnt much faster than a dialup connection. Another alternative is to get WiFi, which is almost a standard feature in new laptops. Then all you need is to get within a couple hundred feet of a wireless access point (Quade posted a good list of free ones earlier in this thread) and go. Works with MacOS and Windows. It is also much faster than the T-Mobile service. The downside is that you need to find an access point to use it, but they are available a most Starbucks, a lot of hotels, libraries, etc.
  21. Big Songs For Little Attention Spans (free!)
  22. Finally, somebody applies The Science.
  23. 4177, first try. Time to hook up the Wacom tablet, or maybe borrow a touch-screen from work.
  24. A live jump is not required. Most likely you will put on an old unairworthy student rig, get in a hotel pool or pond, and do the thing. Expect to pay anywhere from a case of beer to $40 for the training, depending on where you do it. I'd ask around your DZ and the other local DZs first. Most likely you'll find somebody doing one in the near future. If that doesn't work out, Chicagoland Skydiviving Center in Hinckley, IL (3-4 hours from Sheridan) is doing water training the morning of the 18th. Details here.
