150,000 ft. skydive for East Huntspill man
skyjumpsteve replied to skyjumpsteve's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A cyclist is going to attempt a 150,000 skydive?!? Is he going to pop into Staples and buy an "Easy Button" before he attempts this? Good god...... at least he is going to go to "skydiving school" in Spain before making the attempt. Maybe he should team up with Mr. Fournier..... A CYCLIST from East Huntspill is aiming to set a new world record by completing the world's highest skydive. Joby Ingram-Dodd, who grew up in the Sedgemoor village, needs to raise £3million for the 150,000ft jump, which he hopes to carry out in Spring next year. During the 20-minute fall Joby will reach speeds of up to 800mph, breaking the sound barrier. The 28-year-old competed as a track cyclist for eight years and took part in the 2002 Commonwealth Games before retiring and getting a job in London as a stock broker, which he has since given up. Joby said: "Going from such a high adrenalin sport such as track cycling to then working in an office from 9am-5pm was too much of a change. "I wanted to do something that would challenge me again, so when I saw footage of Joseph Kittinger completing a similar jump in 1960 I thought about doing it myself." Joby, who now lives in London, has never done a skydive before and is currently taking part in some physical training. He is due to travel to Spain to attend a skydiving school before going on to California to take part in altitude training sessions. Joby is hoping to reach 150,000ft using a helium balloon, similar to the one used by Richard Branson during his attempt to travel around the earth non-stop. He is currently in talks with ITV and Sky in the hope of commissioning a documentary about his training and world record attempt. -
wingsuits in USA today on friday.

unfortunately there are 1,000 to 10,000 times as many of those "birdies" as there are us birdies ....Birding has emerged in recent decades as a popular hobby in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of people consider themselves to be serious birders, and several million regard themselves as casual birders.... -
....yup. I started jumping in '91 and I started to see BOC either in '91 or '92. I remember thinking the concept of BOC was crazy but after a few jumps with it the deployment was indeed much much more natural and fluid. Yes indeed....you still see a lot of rigs that have a permanent velcro covering where the leg PC bridle used to be.

Good question. I think the airport is about 20 KM (13 miles) from Mt. Washington. I haven't been to this boogie yet (this is the 3'rd year) but from what I understand from people who have been the scenery is jujst amazing. Lookinmg forward to some nice relaxed end of season flocks with the scenery in the background.

I ditto replies 1 thru 5.....went to Mesquite once and would definitely go back.

I have 2,800 jumps of which about 500 are Wingsuit. My first 100 or so I was pulling between 4,500 and 5,000. I stayed at 3,000 to 3,500 for my next 350 or so and only recently have become very comfortable pulling at 2,000. Perhaps a spin-up cut-away on my 10'th WS flight made me a little more cautious than I otherwise would have been but as I fly a tame Spectre 150 I am now perfectly happy opening at 2,000.

For all you New England wingsuiters Skydive New England is hosting a boogie at Mt. Washington on Wednesday Sept. 24. A bunch of us from Flock-U will be there (Steve, Rick, Justin, Riccardo, P. Mike, Jeff, and possibly quite a few others). I believe Scotty Burns will be coming up to film. The scenery will be spectacular and we should be able to put together some awesome cross-country flocks. Take the day off from work and come join us! Rain date is Oct. 1. Is there a video of this swoop posted anywhere?
-
Absolutely....we even have a police chief at our DZ
-
The last jump was a loose load and a couple of people thought it would be fun to fuck with P. Mike by burbling him. After the third burble he flew away. This was the load DSE had a chop on. Matt, thanks again for coming up for our boogie. It was great having you here. I still cant believe we had 40+ birds at Pepperell. In October of '06 we were absolutely stoked when we put together a 7 way.

What do you mean "can't post the final assembly?" ....and how about a pic of the 25 way diamond? ....and who is going to post videos? What an awesome weekend. The weather was perfect and we did some of the best dives I have ever been on. It was very cool seeing Scottie's video of the 16 way, having it be completely built by the time he got down to it and keeping it together and tight for the whole jump. Sweet!

Today didn't suck! The "Casa-less" boogie turned into the Casa boogie when the big bird finally came in mid-afternoon after some delays in the Carolinas. We have 36 wingsuiters here and more showing up tomorrow. Did some great jumps today including a beautiful sunset formation load. The weather has been phenomenal and tomorrow looks to be the same. First jump tomorrow is a free load courtesy of Tony Suits.....definitely looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

There is also a direct Bus that goes to Nashua if you want to avoid a car rental....someone can come get you from the bus stop. Call manifest for bus info...I don't have it handy.

Danny, glad you are going to make it!. As Spot and Scott posted Motel 6 and Holiday Inn are both fine are are the same distance (about 10 mins) from the DZ. Some people do camp at the DZ but truthfully I think you'll be a lot happier if you shell out a few bucks for a hotel room. I think Motel 6 is about $55-$60. See you this weekend.

Incredible that the top 5 teams broke the world record and the the sixth team was better than the world record prior to the prelims of the '08 Olympics. Amazing.
