And this relates to an understanding of the pope thinking that gays are damaging humanity.... how? It was in reference to kallend's sarcastic comment about priests. Who for the most part devote their lives to serve God and help people. The Bible warns us that there will be evil people disguising themselves as good in order to hide the evil things they do. They do not neutralize the contributions of the good. ...

--They WERE priests. Ordained, touched by the bishop, direct line from Peter, the whole deal. I think Jude gave the best description for these type of people. "These men are stains in your gatherings when they feast with you, without fear, caring for themselves, clouds without water, autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead. Wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the blackest darkness has been reserved forever." Jude 1:12 & 13 ...

As if we needed more proof that religion nuts are crazy!
maadmax replied to Remster's topic in Speakers Corner
I think what he's getting at is amazement at the muppet that willingly gave that up! Can you provide a translation to accompany your statement? ... -
--Yes, I'm sure that in the current global climate, it is gay people who will lead to the destruction of humanity Quote I am not much of a Catholic, but I can't really blame the elderly gentleman for how he feels. After seeing the carnage a handful of gays, parading as priests, caused his church. And as far as the imaginary harm that might be caused to children exposed to that behavior, I guess you could talk to some of those alter boys for a first hand report. That is of course, if you still have an open mind on the subject. ...

As if we needed more proof that religion nuts are crazy!

So what is it Remster, are you jealous or just a prude? -
Do you agree with Bush or not? Is the Bible 100% true, or not? There are passages that I question. I place these in one of two categories. Either the truth contained eludes me or they were introduced erroneously in the transcription/compilation process. So to answer your question, I consider both possibilities. In my experience little is ever black or white. ...

--My original question was this - if only parts of the Bible are true (which has been stated by Bush, and I think by you), and everyone gets to decide for themselves which parts are true, doesn't that undermine the credibility of the entire religion? A religion which bases it's entire foundation on this supposedly historical book that seems to change a lot? For me the credibility of the Bible remains intact. As a young believer the Bible was overwhelming and contradictory. Initially some of the information was immediately usable, other passages were just bizarre. Over time, more and more of the strange passages have started to fit into a big picture. I see the Bible laryered like an onion, I peal off the parts I can use now and leave the parts that l can't for further study and meditation. I will be the first to admit there are some parts of the Bible that I will probably never get any benefit from. ...

I wonder what he did to make people hate an entire religion? It is not him of course. It is the reaction some people experience when the evil they harbor and cherish is exposed by the Truth.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/12/15/national/main4668216.shtml[/url] Not very surprising considering how pinko Oregon is.Quote Instead of expressing your repressed anger about a system of Truth that contributes greatly to many peoples lives, why don't you figure out what is bothering you and state that. A nut case bomber does not represent Christianity, but the way you titled your post does expose a problem in your thought process. ...

Does anyone ever learn something from these discussions to the point that they can: 1- Agree with the other side (I.E. left/right) 2- start thinking the other way? I learn a lot. Where else can you interact with people with so many different view points.

Maybe I am mis-reading the tone of your post, but it comes across a bit condescending. If that was not your intent then I apologies. I have heard many Christians talk that way in the past though. Once they find out that you dont believe in the bible, they tend to look down on you. That doesnt sound very Christian to me. No condescension meant. I wish all the best of luck in their spiritual pursuits. There certainly are a bewildering number of choices regarding the correct spiritual path. Regardless if that path is inclusive, exclusive, or a combination. Anyone seeking, has my highest respect.

I am a non believer, but it still interests me in the way that people can believe in a bible that supposedly is the "true" word of God, when there is really no evidence that it is true and correct. Speaking as one who has heard and responded to the Bible's message. The proof and power of the Bible is the way its wisdom enables the believer to experience a much better life than they otherwise could have. Without understanding the unanswered needs of ones soul, the Bibles message must seem chaotic.

That is what the bible says. According to these "facts" I have posted. Some of that was said of Buddha as well. Well then I guess it must be one or the other. I can't see attempting to reconcile both as being very productive.

For discussion lets say that they are all accurate....... then it comes down to the "tweaking" of the message. Maybe God said, "ok, they didnt bite on the no afterlife thing, lets send Jesus down and tell them they can all come live with me if they believe." This would go to the belief of some that God does not have a perfect plan and it is all just a big experiment. It is really pretty simple, the differences between the two clear up the confusion. "Jesus is the way the truth and the life, there is no other name under heaven where by you might be saved." & "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that who ever believed in Him would not perish but have ever lasting life." ...

And then there are the guys who sit on the touchline flinging shit at everyone, content in their own cozy moral superiority engendered from the knowledge that they're not one of the two shitflinging sides. ...er what?

--Ah yes, the "Truth (TM)". A classic case of false advertising. Just because people don't buy into the "Truth (TM)", doens't mean their life is devoid of meaning, or truth. That topic is continually being discussed and re-discussed. The question is, is life special? Are we any different than a lump of coal? ...

The funny thing about this thread, is observing the pack mentality of atheists, like hunting dogs who have gotten the sent of their prey. Who have only weak humanistic philosophy to answer the important questions of life. Take what you have and go in the peace and contentment you claim to have. It won't be but an instant, geologically speaking, before we have an answer to our differing opinions. The Truth will probably be stranger than anyone one of us can imagine. ...

Goodness, that was exhausting. I knew it was a stretch, hoping to find some commonality in the uniqueness of life. The ability to know Truth makes life special. I guess if ones life is devoid of meaning, it would be hard to find anything special about them. ...

Nova's judgment day: Intelligent design on trial

Nova's judgment day: Intelligent design on trial
maadmax replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
Because wisdom and awareness don't even exist in the way that matter and energy do. You can't go and quantify a bit of awareness, you can't make any laws that describe the behaviour of wisdom. In case you haven't noticed, we are still in the metaphysical stone age. We have some handed down bits of wisdom on how to manipulate the metaphysical environment, but lack the knowledge to describe and measure it. Just saying "it doesn't exist then", is lame. Just think of the enlightened discussions we would of had around the camp fire 10,000 years ago regarding natural laws. ... -
Nova's judgment day: Intelligent design on trial
maadmax replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
I see nothing obvious about it at all. Do you have any evidence that awareness and wisdom came from a singularity? The fact that you are sitting there and discussing the issues is evidence of some sort. Assigning your creative self awareness to a favorable chance combinations of quarks and electrons can't be proved, and is to much of a stretch for me. ... -

The problem is that some people fulfill the destiny that God laid out for them by strapping on explosives and walking into a shopping center.Quote So they say.
