Scotty B, Jeff N, Johnny U at Sebastian lately...some good birds over there ATM.

Really? so you know it was a Tram vs a C3, 892, or mx150? Biden played with his tie a lot, and a uni vs omni (it was a live environment), easily has level fluctuations without anything being touched. A broadcast compressor will only make this more evident (and doesn't require help from anyone's hands). Toss in AC3 compression, and any number of things, it could easily explain this away. Fox annoys me, but I sincerely doubt anyone torpedoed Biden's mic.

It appears you've made a good decision. Fastex' under load are very difficult to release.
-
How did you train for this? Do you have a cutaway? Or are you relying on being able to release a Fastex connector?
-
I've used BASELINE (used to be called "Flight data". The engineer is from my DZ. Yes, it does GPS mapping, although I occasionally have issues with exporting data. It's a very good app, the author has put a lot into it.

Sony Action Cam - GoPro competitor (HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15)
DSE replied to soulbabel's topic in Photography and Video
Friday evening, I'll have a few more examples up, from all 12 cams -
Perhaps someone honors their commitment to DZO's that have asked for confidentiality as they wish to remain "on the down-low." Given how USPA headquarters manages safety conversations, probably a good thing. -Outside of that, public details are: -What kind of aircraft -Suit model -Experience level of wingsuiter -Injury type (where known) -Cost/damage (where known) to aircraft A circulating rumor says that the strike chart includes "a foot hitting the door on exit." This is not accurate. A wingsuit tailstrike by definition is "A portion of a body or rig striking a horizontal stabilizer." It can't be defined by "exit" as there are also one confirmed historical strike (not on the charts) where the vertical stab was struck through a combination of pilot error and wingsuiter error after launch had occurred. Repair cost was nearly 100K$.

The CX100 (if you can find one) in NTSC, CX110 in PAL, up to the 760 are all good choices. -

I haven't seen/accessed this cam (never heard of it til this post), but it's probably time to stop. Jumping with 12 is fun, but also a pain in the neck (literally and figuratively) and 12 is enough. We've got all the "popular" cameras, and I've started comping the footage for the review already. Too much work to add another cam and do more jumps. :) -
Check out our Level 7 (Not kidding)

nope. Once the color pass extracts chroma from the image; you're married to it.

I usually agree with you, Twardo, but here I respectfully disagree with your assessment. Here's why: I'm not sure that you have evidence that what we're doing now is not correcting the problem. (Hear me out): In 2011, we reportedly had one wingsuit-related aircraft strike every 28 days. I'm not going to harp on the fact that those stats were apparently worldwide statistics, and included things like people catching their foot on the door while exiting. - for our purposes here, let's just assume they're all legitimate. Every listed tailstrike is a body part or rig making contact with a horizontal stabilizer. In nearly all cases on the public chart, the cost of repair, type of injury (if any) is noted. "Catching a foot on a door while exiting" isn't uniquely listed in the chart, unless the foot catch resulted in a body/rig to making contact with the horizontal (or vertical) stabilizer. Yes, they're world-wide. The broad majority of them are in the US. There are a few not on the list because they've either surfaced after the last list was generated, or they are not confirmed. "more" doesn't seem better in this conversation.

That's kinda my wonder, is WB on power-up. Played with it a bit today, pointing at a blue or green card to fool it. Fail. Might be yours is bad? One of mine is a pre-production model, other two are production units, so hopefully mine is like everyone else'. -
Standardized Wingsuit Instruction Opinion Poll
DSE replied to DSE's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thinking that the USPA creating a program will make the insurance companies happy is flawed. The insurance companies only care about one thing and one thing only.... Protecting their bottom line. It will take a track record of proven performance to make the issue dead to the insurance agencies. This can happen with or without a USPA created program. And this issue is not even brought up in this new rating program. Actually, it is. This can be done without creating an entire new program at the USPA. And that is the primary reason why the USPA should NOT get involved with WS instruction. The USPA does not even correctly handle its current responsibilities. 1. The USPA has a terrible track record of creating any program. 2. WS is such a small aspect of the sport that other much larger issues still exist... Canopy flight collisions for example (they have killed FAR more than any WS issue). If someone like WickedWS, or DSE wanted to create a private program like SDU to certify WS instructors, it would have the same actual benefit as the USPA doing it and it would actually be run by experts in the subject matter. There are 5 of these private programs, one manufacturer program. Of those programs, only three individual holds at minimum an AFFI rating, let alone a USPA Examiner rating. The three that hold an AFFI rating are all part of a manufacturer-sponsored program. There are methods that encourage tailstrikes, methods that discourage tailstrikes. Most instructors seem to lean towards encouraging tailstrikes. But tailstrikes aren't the only issues. They just happen to get a lot of focus because of the recent insurance company letter/threat. The USPA has a terrible track record of creating programs. * AFF was banned till Ken Colman did it anyway. After it was shown to work the USPA adopted it. * Throwouts for students were banned till Nelson (among others) did it. The USPA later adopted it. Yep, and it's worked well * Tandem progression was ignored by the USPA till several DZ's were readying doing it. Then the USPA adopted it. and it's worked well * SDU created a coaching program. Then the USPA pretty much adopted it. And it works, quite well * Windtunnel training is still pretty much ignored by the USPA. to their peril. Learn more about what's happening at IBA tunnels What I'm hearing you say is that USPA is very slow in responding to advances in the sport. The standardized program is not new, it's been in play for 3 years in current inception and five years in development. USPA is "creating" nothing. We're merely tasked with enforcing standardized training as presented in the SIM, SEC 6.9. And the simple fact is that WS is such a small percentage of members of the USPA that the USPA could save more lives by focusing on canopy related deaths. People are dying because they text while driving, so we should no longer focus on DUI's, is that it? -

GoPro also is saturating the color, seeing this in the Drift (added today). While some probably see this as a benefit, I see it as a losing proposition. All of the cams have their advantages, but the one thing I like is the more "true" color to the AS15. GoPro has the best image at the smallest resolution in bright areas with low movement, but it also has bloom that none of the other cameras have. Personally, I prefer being able to have more control in post vs losing some of my options due to camera settings. 10 cameras being jumped at once...learning a lot in this process. -
Standardized Wingsuit Instruction Opinion Poll
DSE replied to DSE's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
While USPA's mission does not specifically say "advanced training," it does not specifically disclude it, either. Nor does it specifically mention "first-time skydivers." The mission statement doesn't say anything about Hertz car rental discounts, yet USPA provides for it. Training is training. Whether it's advanced or not. And "training" is part of the mission, isn't it? USPA is the *only* major skydiving body that does not have requisite wingsuit training standards. Is there any other discipline that has generated an insurance company threat letter? What other discipline that can exit the aircraft 5 miles (or more) from the DZ and show up at point of deployment 4 minutes after exit, roughly 6 minutes following pilot notification of skydiving activity?. Additionally, all forms of skydiving use essentially the same equipment excepting Tandems and Wingsuits. What other discipline has demonstrated an increasing number of tailstrikes, that in the worst case may drop an aircraft onto a home or business? Faced with rising insurance cost, no assurance of skill, training, and knowledge, could possibly inspire a DZO to continue to allow wingsuiting? Several DZ's have now banned or severely regulated wingsuiting. This isn't a beneficial trend in the sport, IMO. Most every person on the board has realized error in the response to canopy issues, and most feel that error began 15 years ago. This is our chance to prevent wingsuiting from becoming another canopy issue. We can be ahead of the curve and not play "catch-up" like we are with canopy incidents. How many pre-BSR deaths were there of low-time skydivers wearing wingsuits? At least 5 we can prove, nearly double that in related incidents. How many post BSR deaths of low-time skydivers wearing wingsuits? Zero. The excellent and oft-asked question from an earlier post is responded to in an FAQ about the standardized training proposal. FAQ- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y-Exdt_44nB2AgINM7MEWkZ-SytVM-HuyzK_HNRWtD0/edit PowerPoint presented to board- https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/13nX758ZMGlcsOMnRJxopHCDRWuhK60FKHr6yivLQNN8/edit Proposed Proficiency Card- https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BxhZWxju4_IleEc2ZkhpNjR5eHM Proposed Evaluation Sheet-https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BxhZWxju4_IlZFA4MEJTaXh1REk The original proposal in 2008/2009 in person and over email. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eQjtRcfi7yLimcf8xTqu1QoX0cH-u7MiyQ4nX8QKEIs/edit For some reason, dropzone.com doesn't always cooperate with the Gdoc links, apologies if you'll need to copy/paste. In 2010, USPA generated a poll, sent out to the general membership. This online poll produced a result of 65% of all respondents in favor of a required, standardized training. In 2012, USPA sent out a request for responses to this topic, sent over Twitter, Facebook (several pages) personal emails, and here on Dropzone.com. Greater than 80% of respondents have asked for standardized instruction, administered by USPA. There is no cost to USPA for these materials, the proposal, and there are no additional costs to develop the system as it's been tested for 5 years in development, 3 years in actual implementation. The safety record of 600 test cases is demonstrable both by numerous DZO's and other documentation. The system we use, although it is not tied in any direct way to the USPA proposal, demonstrates the quality of training materials used for the proposal. https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BxhZWxju4_IlYVhTc2lFdzNPM0k In short, the proposal merely asks that USPA adopt a required FFC using the same syllabus provided when I submitted a proposal to change SIM Sec 6.2 into a new section now seen as Sec 6.9, with all aspects of a proper FFC included. It's deplorable that this has become a tailstrike conversation. At the same time, the industry now has a different perspective and contributor to the conversation than it had 30 days ago. It would be a sad day in skydiving if the only exit points for wingsuiters was a cliff. Even in BASE, there are regulations being proposed and insurance required at certain exit points. It's not just a skydiving issue. -
Hey Gang, quick heads-up for those not on the FB pages; Performance Cup 2012 registration is now open. November 9-11 Call Manifest: (951) 245 9939 60.00 in advance or 75.00 after November 1. Includes meal catered from The Alligator Pit (Well known restaurant in the area), T-Shirt, and other items. You know what the prizes look like, but we've just added a coupla cool cameras to the mix too. You are able to use your own flysight. It will have to be erased and firmware verified the night or morning before the comp. We have a repeater for the AC, and will file a NOTAM for the days prior to and during the event as a testing exercise. Judges Randy Connell, Klaus Rheinwald, and Michael Cooper will be on hand to keep things smooth. Every now and again someone posts about their bad-ass speed, time, or distance...come prove it! We've also opened the comp up to Tracking Suits this year. This means nearly anyone can come compete. Been keeping my eye on a coupla guys with home-made tracking suits out there... No limit to the number of jumps; the only requirement is two jumps minimum in your declared categories. This year we've also added an overall for Time/Distance/Speed. Lots of categories, lots of awards, and a heck of a lotta fun. Sponsored by L&B, Paralog, Phoenix-Fly, Skydive Elsinore Wingsuit School,Sony Electronics, Sony Creative Software, VASST.

The most interesting images are the multicam screengrabs where you can see 8 cameras. The Sony p60 and p120 images are out of sync because of the speed flags, but the rest is all the same frame, same everything. There are inside and outside shots. More to come... -
A difference at the Performance Cup; you're exiting at 11K vs higher. This is a step towards better leveling of the field. See you in November!

Both Android devices are JB. Google bricked my Nexus with the JB upgrade but it got me a free GIII. -
No tracking suit during the camp (not safe nor useful in a small formation unless everyone else is wearing them). However...You'll learn more than you're already doing, and will be able to apply it to the tracking suit.

Therein lies the problem. You're messing with source, which destroys the integrity of the test. I jumped with 7 cameras today, testing every setting possible given the 7 I had to work with. WIFI works perfectly on my iPad, Galaxy III cell, Galaxy 2 tab. No smearing, and in overall picture, the unanimous decision of all people involved (several) was that the AS15 was superior in picture. I'm not so convinced in the controls, housing, or menus, but in image... it's significantly better. I have both a PAL and NTSC model, two production and one pre-production. Size comparison: https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/133223_4177023057193_855070472_o.jpg Screengrabs (jpg compression) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ETq_jRZV0LNgAfbVEhSJupq1ILEP7kc6GF7B1NAsXVc/edit The images on the Gdoc are not modified, so they do go off the edge of the page, sorry about that; google limits page sizes. It is by no means the review I'm writing; it's just some fast screengrabs from all the cameras (not even all synced up yet). -
