I once was a big believer in neither for flying camera. However, after seeing all the idiots with GoPro's on their helmets with no cutaway... I've re-thought my position a bit. Cutaways should be on any helmet that has a camera on it, IMO, and this should be a primary consideration before removing an RSL or Skyhook from a rig. Sure, an RSL or Skyhook might make a bad day worse; but the odds/statistics are more in favor of it making a bad day better.

With the military around, Elsinore is open most Tuesdays in Dec. Both are terrific DZ's, both have good organizers, Perris has a better restaurant/bar, Elsinore has better landing areas and view.

This time of year, you'll find more wingsuiting at Sebastian (usually).

[email] You can refer this guide for mts into mov on your Mac. http://www.ilikemall.com/how-to/convert-mts-to-mov-mac.html I am using this video converter to convert my camera mts files, works well on my MacBook. Bear in mind, you're losing a fair amount of quality (and time) in the transcode.

Looping is on by default. You can disable it, and save it per project. Most people actually prefer it vs a freezeframe. You can also permanently disable it by going to Preferences | Editing tab, and in the top selection, disable looping by default.

Mesquite is a very good DZ; Brad runs a nice place. Not a lot of outs, but they also have good instructors there. Elsinore and Perris are a short distance away too. We have a lot of jumpers come spend a week or so at Skydive Elsinore, getting skills in a large landing area before going back up to the much smaller area in Mesquite.
-
I'm betting you have Looping enabled, and are dragging the clip/event past its end point. right click, Choose SWITCHES, be sure that LOOP is not checked.

"huge" is relative. Which setting are you using? 4k isn't a huge difference from 2K in file size out of the GP3 (for example). Either way, the compression is what it is, all you can do is reduce resolution.
-
Trying to finish the "part 2" of the camera shootout, which includes the GP3, but a short comment...you might as well by a GP2 for the huge cost savings, if you're considering a Silver or White. Two GP3/Black have been returned from our DZ in the past week. I'm keeping my two in hopes of an update, but the image quality comparison between the GP2 and GP3 in p30 and p60 modes is negligible. Certainly not worth abandoning an existing GP2 over.

I have a Mac. 25-30 of them, in fact. My work requires a Mac. I hate it, so do run Bootcamp on it so I can run Windows, too. Gotta love Apple; "Creative freedom!! (as long as you create the way we want you to). One huge benefit of my Mac (and FCP), is that if I charge by the hour vs by the project, I can make some real money. On the PC side, charging by the hour makes no sense because I can work so much faster.

Sony Action Cam - GoPro competitor (HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15)
DSE replied to soulbabel's topic in Photography and Video
Agreed. The RePlay offers haptic feedback, Drift Ghost offers a remote with feedback. However... a lot of people are turning to POV cameras for tandems, whether some of us like it or not (I'm not one of them). -
contour vs gopro mounts for minimum snag points?
DSE replied to mixedup's topic in Photography and Video
Why? it's not that much lower a profile than a GP. Cheaper, but there isn't much less of a snag hazard. Sorry to hear you got bit too. -
Skymama still owes me n' Billvon a spanking...

8K will be the end of most of our lifecycle...We'll see other things creep in, but at 8K, properly acquired, we've hit the end of what we can resolve. Bigger screens, better codecs, transparent displays, wall displays that auto- scale based on viewing distance, large format touch screen interactive ability, voice control, asset management and embedded ads in the broadcast video (imagine seeing a box of lucky charms, touching it, and having it auto-order you a box, no text in the ad). SmellOvision is likely coming back in a different form (fourth attempt), and displays that are 100% integrated to computer tasks as wall displays are already here. But...don't expect resolutions to go past 8k in our lifetime. There isn't even a proposed research format any higher than that ATM.

Gee...and here we are putting off-the-shelf desktops in a lot of DZ's and remotely managing them. :) The editing machine is ENTIRELY based around the acquisition format (is it uncompressed 10bit, RED, AVCHD, AVC?) and the application requirements. Some apps/hardware want specific hardware, others simply don't give a damn. In today's world, an off-the-shelf system is plenty good enough for most folks use. Disable anti-virus or create a profile that doesn't use the internet/antivirus, and you're usually great to go. Set up one guy that is a hard-core Mac guy, but hates FCP and FCPX, got him a 400.00 Windows 8 laptop, he's finishing a long-form with composites and a lot of overlay, mixing RED, AVC, and AVCHD on it. editing at full frame rate all day long. Measurbating is fun tho
-
The GoPro is a waste for 4k, due to the frame rate. Things that hold still or move veeerrrryyyyy slowly will be fine in 4K with the GoPro. You'll struggle with editing on most configurations. 4K is the next big thing, the PlayStation 4 will make it even more household. However... We're a ways away from it being common.

Do you have 4k display ? a 4K display won't affect whether it will stream (but you already knew that)

Congrats to the winners and participants at the Performance Cup 2012! It was incredibly smooth, weather was sweet, some new records set, and some heavy metal taken home. Overall winners were Scott Callantine (Open), Joel Hindman (Intermediate), and Ken Murphy (Tracking). Thanks to Sony Electronics, RePlay Cameras, Sony Creative Software, Adrenaline Obsession, L&B, CEA Artists, DeltaGear, VASST, Phoenix-Fly, Paralog, and FlySight for the sponsorship of the event. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/169427_432635086802974_482930279_o.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/617140_4393216461893_1194551381_o.jpg See ya at the Performance Camps, coming to a DZ around the US near you in 2013

You likely got the PC size right the first time....OTOH, we've had guys show up here with 24" PC's on 5' bridles. And at least two where they've got 32" PC's on 12' bridles (measured from pin) Neither end of the scale is optimal for WS.

Which OS are you running? Keep in mind, you'll have to lot/import using iMovie no matter which OS you're using.

The GoPro 4K isn't useful in skydiving at all, IMO, except as an effect shot. 15fps is useless; marketing buzz hype for a camera that doesn't warrant the excitement. The 2K is a cool feature.

Sony Action Cam - GoPro competitor (HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15)
DSE replied to soulbabel's topic in Photography and Video
Please elaborate? -
And even if you have thousands of jumps; I watched (and video'd) Jonathan Tagle chopping his Velo on multiple occasions, while jumping a wingsuit. For FFCs at our school, nothing higher than 1.3. We'll loan you a canopy/rig if we have to.
