  1. OK,Just a thought. How many of you completely inspect your main parachute every start of the new year?Probably not enough! It takes about an hour.Inspect every sem.Look for any unusual wear.Report any problems to your rigger.
  2. Both Scott and Brian will give you all the tools you need.Scott is closer.Have fun, land safe.
  3. Too many to list.(lol)Suppose the worst was my last hook turn.(I mean the really last 1)A bruised kidney and a week off from jumping will cure that bad habit.Plus the DZ manager let me have for doing it!Yikes,be careful out there!
  4. Brian, talked to Jim Crouch about this.Yes,canopy flight does deserve more study.Coming up with a set of standards means USPA plans to take more of a leadership role?As of this date it's more up to You Scott M. and Jim S. to pass this knowledge on by way of your courses.I know it doesn't make much sense does it?Oh Well,we don't know everything?
  5. Tom,night jumps are just about the coolest jumps you will ever make skydiving.I love them.Have 9-10-11(not sure exact # without logbook search.)The first night jump is usually made between 5000-3500"Solo".Solo is important as not to get overloaded by the new experience.A novice flying in (freefall and under canopy)at night can be really dangerous to other jumpers.Go through the briefing.Have fun,Land safe!Later, rabbit
  6. Learn more about flying my main parachute safely.Have fun at the same time.
  7. The center stows make for a more predictable, consistent on heading opening.Still trying convince some side stow people to change over to the center stow method. It makes a bigger difference on the smaller canopies.Anybody having a high wind loading, jumping a small canopy should seriously consider the center stow method on their bags!
  8. I love my Jedei 97 Swept wing (no.1) Model no. 1070 built feb.97.Still feel like I'm test jumping it.Don't get to jump as much as I'd like.
  9. O.k.,normally I'm to busy(packing) to notice the women in for tandems.Last weekend a young ladies mom showed up wearing the tightest pink pants I'd ever seen a shapely woman wearing.Just happened to look up to see her facing me with the"Biggest Camel toe" i'd ever seen!Whoa!Didn't passout, but made that mental note for when winter sets in.Sometimes you just gotta love your job!
  10. Part of me says go for it(Dick)part says forget it!(head)Hell,I don't get that lucky! When you work with as many people as I have over the yrs(26 yrs.),you stop and think more about what can go wrong.I like things casual.Hoping this means I respect my work mates enough to not push a relationship where it might not need to go?Think,Drink, then think again!
  11. Friday's out of the "Fireball" 182 really work for me.Work packing Sat. and Sun. so that is when I have my fun.Cool.
  12. Sure. What really bugs me most is someone who should know better doing something really stupid.2 or 3 times landing your parachute and yourself on top of the clubhouse for example. When you miss(without an out)it is ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. Good Luck. It's a great way to make some jump money. You will learn new things about gear and parachutes.Never hesitate to ask a rigger a question. If it seems like it needs attention, seam stitching, holes, rips whatever inform your customer.Have Fun.
  14. Have just witnessed Scott Millers course. Was real surprised about how jumpers thought after each jump.Come backs like"I didn't know that" and "That was really Cool",made my day.It is a more interesting course now that I have seen it working.Learn as much as you can.He even answered a long standing question I had about "Stalling" ellipticals. You Don't!When he explained why,(I knew it was unsave)I was real impressed with his knowledge of what happens when you try to recover from such a radical input. My hats off to him!
  15. Very Cool!Glad to hear that there are still some of us left. Why back in the day, late 70's we could and did make jumps from 2,500 for just $2.50!Being that I was mostly poor at the time this was a very attractive way to make jumps.Hey,I might even learn something? Not sure how many low jumps I do have?Several Hundred I guess?Even now I open between 5,000 and 8,000 to just fly my parachute. It's all good.
  16. 8 Years ago.1,600 + Jumps on just about every square parachute ever made.Mostly learned what was different about how each design flew.Figured it was time to try some of my ideas on how it could be done better. With much help form everybody involved,I managed to be a test jumper, builder of chutes for 18 months. This was a unique learning experience!I still feel that I have yet to master my elliptical? It might be 2-3 more years before I do?Anyway,go slow, learn much, think within yourself when you go the "Elliptical" route.
  17. Humm, not sure I would like to pack at a place like Perris?Having been packing steady now for nine months,I finally feel comfortable packing any sport rig! Some things I just learned.Like, you don't pack the "Smaller Rocketships" like the big boy parachutes. For some reason I could not figure out that once in a while a "Slammer" would occur with the smaller, faster chutes.I started asking questions,Rigger,Former builder of PD chutes. What was I doing wrong?Seems that you can rap the tail tighter on the larger chutes but,"Most Certainly Not" on the smaller ones. Now just 2 or 3 twists on small chutes,5-6 on bigger.Did You know that?
  18. Cool, sometimes when you least expect it or want it,you will learn about how to better fly the parachute to save yourself. When I have to fly near folks(mostly Tandems now!)I first let them know how high I will be pulling.(WELL above them)If they can,t see me I make sure I put myself were the can "SEE ME"!Usually I spiral down and land well before them and well after the more experienced groups.Knowing where everybody is and what their intentions are is what it is all about. As always head on a swivel is the best way to see everyone! These other people who caused you some stress need to be reminded the sky is not "THAT BIG" after all and especially when it comes to landing in an off field situation.
  19. Humm, been thinking about this 1 for several yrs also. How does 1 person get to a safe opening altitude?Have several Ideas but can't tell you any of them.Sorry,a patent could rest on me me keeping my mouth shut!(lol)
  20. Humm, this is a tuffy?Twice I took myself out of jumping for a week to ten days to heal.Smacked the ground pretty hard outside the pit at Deland.(my own dumb stupid mistake.)Started walking on bruised foot after three days of rest.Got on the bicycle as soon as possible even though it hurt like hell! After ten days raped the foot and ankle and continued on with my Accuracy practice jumps.Bruised a kidney on my"Last" hook turn ever and stayed on the ground a week at Z-hills until it was no longer painful. This is a judgment call.
  21. Brian, working on reading it.Alot of the first half I knew already from my NASA intro to aerodynamics class.Of course the most important test pilot info you taught me!(Is this area covered enough?)This basic material should be required reading for "All Canopy Pilots" regardless of experience level. My only gripe so far are the mentions of "Airlocks"(selling reasons?)and your ability pat yourself on the back too much?Is that really important to "Getting the needed information out to who might need it"?Again, nothing personal,I am enjoying your book.As Always being honest.
  22. I,m just now reading Brian Germains new book,"The Parachute and It's Pilot".While most of the beginning is stuff I already knew from my NASA aerodynamics intro class, the basic info is the same. Not trying to push brians book either. It has good information that every canopy pilot should know!
  23. Good Answers for the most part.Glad I had Crew training back in the late 70's,when it was really new and cool to do crew. How about how many dedicated canopy jumps do you have?A good "Canopy Pilot" understands his/her limitations also.I must wear glasses to skydive.Have rap-around sports goggles.Proper Vision is mandatory for any canopy flight (High Performance or not).Lastly, make reasonably smart choices on when to jump and not to jump.Which conditions are potentially dangerous? What have I yet to learn about my how my canopy flys?Recently(2 jumps ago),worked on cross wind landings).
  24. Some days are just better than others!Just this past weekend I noticed alot of the jumpers "Not" paying attention when it came to landing into the wind.Days when the wind speed and direction can and do change repeatedly seem to give almost everybody some problems.Notice I said almost everybody. Some of our most experienced jumpers "Always" land into the wind! These are the ones who always follow the "Landing Pattern" and should be watched from the air to help if your not sure.I,m sure some others have noticed this and know who to follow and who not to follow.Think about that the next time the beer light goes on and there might be some education coming out of talking about landing procedures.
