Wait, I'm confused. It's either, "will acomplish absolutely nothing," or, "is ruining the country with his new socialist laws." You can't have it both ways. - Dan G

I can see why you're getting out of engineering. I said $20k, not 20%. It was significantly more than 20%. I'm not offended, because, once again, you're dead wrong. My company works with technology that it is illegal to export without a license. Military and very high tech work has to be done in the US. And if you think the quality of work you're going to get out of SEA is the same as what you get domestically, I feel sorry for whatever company you end up managing. With that attitude, nothing new will ever get invented. For you, maybe not, but your experience is far from a universal truth. - Dan G

With all due respect, you have no idea what you're talking about. I got a few job offers right out of E-school. The private sector job I took was $20k higher than the equivalent .gov job. Our company is currently going through a ton of cost cutting measures to improve efficiency. The jobs that are getting cut are HR, accounting, secretarial, you know, overhead. Engineering is not overhead to an engineering company, it is profit. You don't cut profit to save money. Geez, I though you were getting an MBA. You should think about what you're saying before you say it. - Dan G

Pro-tip: You don't have to date/marry another engineer. Stereotypical, and not true. See above. I still use my textbooks as references regularly. BTW, if you didn't actually read your books, you were probably not much of a student. You school sounds like it sucked. Or maybe, once again, you weren't much of a student. Yeah, engineering school is time consuming. If you don't like it, go get an English degree. Hmm, I made over that right out of school with a BS. And I've gotten way more that 2% raises per year since. In the private sector, good work gets rewarded. You sound like you hate engineering. Maybe you schould get into another line of work and leave the hard stuff to the rest of us. - Dan G

Terrorists don't need to put a bomb on a train to take it out, they just have to take out the tracks. Having a "Do Not Ride" list will just assure that no terrorists are accidently on the train when it plummets over the side of a mountain. - Dan G

No one is making you take your old sticker off your car. If you don't want the new one, throw it out. I was only a USPA member for 14 years. If you need a few dozen of the old stickers, let me know, I've got a frickin' box of them somewhere. Some people are not happy without something to bitch about. - Dan G

Farmers now required to have a license for 'bird bangers'
DanG replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
Only ugly ones. - Dan G -
Yep, it probably was. You kep claiming that 25 minutes of tape (as if anyone uses tape anymore) was erased. News reports, on the other hand, say that communication was disrupted for about 25 minutes. The two things are not the same. And the likihood of the public ever seeing unedited video of the raid is about zero. Operators aren't too keen on publicizing tactics and techniques. - Dan G

Tell me you don't believe that the real world is like 24 and The Bourne Identity. - Dan G

Nice example, but there's not enough detail there to say for sure. If they suspected an ambush was imminent, they would have changed tactics in response anyway. I'd like to hear more about this story. Maybe when I have time I'll look up more details. - Dan G
-
I don't recall anyone in authority ever saying the helicopter was shot down. Granted, those bits changed. I think the original story was that a woman believed to be his wife was killed. The only thing that changed was the fact that she wasn't his wife. This one's new to me. All I remember hearing was that one of the ways they determined it was him was from his body measurements. That doesn't mean they got out a tape measure, it means that the dude they killed was the right size. OBL was very tall for an Arab, so checking to see how tall they guy they killed was makes sense. It's unlikely the SEALs had tape measures, but I suppose it is possible. - Dan G

For me, the moral and legal arguments push it over the edge. Soldiers don't take an oath to defend the people of the United States from harm, they take an oath to defend the Constitution. Using torture, IMHO, is a threat to the American ideal, and as such should be off the table. - Dan G
-
I wish I could. Read most of the responses to this thread, and its obvious most people want some seriously twisted revenge. Sorry, I meant to say, "yous guys." - Dan G
-
Do you not realize the difference between 25 minutes of communication loss, and going back to "erase the tape" later? The communications with the States would have been by satellite, which is notoriously fickle. Having used mobile satellite communications devices, I'm not at all surprized that video was lost during the raid. Frankly, I'm surprized they had semi-real time communications with the White House at all. - Dan G
-
That sounds good, but if you're going to take that much time, you might as well use the tried and true techniques that don't require torture. "You guys" who want to use torture always trot out the ticking time bomb, "we don't time to be PC" scenario. Trained interrogators can make the informant want to share their knowledge if given enough time. They get much better intel that way, and if the guy ever gets released, he won't have gruesome stories and scars to use against us. Besides, torture is illegal and immoral. There was a day that those things mattered. I'm sorry that day is passed. - Dan G

"Stealth Helos Used In Osama Raid" - Aviation Leak
DanG replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
And the next time you (not you, Dave) bitch about defense contractors, keep in mind that the helicopters aren't built or designed by the DoD. Defense contractors make and design all the cool shit that helps keep our military on top. - Dan G -
The "ticking time bomb" scenario that people love to trot out is not from the real world. In the real world, terrorist operations take years of planning. The chance that we happened to catch OBL mere seconds before he was about to put an operation into action is infinitesimally small. I'm willing to take that chance and use longer term methods that have been shown to be much more effective. I'd prefer to save the lives of all the people who would have been impacted by the dozens of operations planned for the next few years instead of trying to save the lives of the people who are going to be killed before the next commercial break. - Dan G
-
Like I said, the only changes to the story were armed vs. unarmed, and using the woman as a shield. Shot while resisting hasn't changed. If you really think they were giving you an engineered story, don't you think they would have worked out all the details ahead of time? The fact that there was initial confusion and people got their facts wrong indicates that the story was not pre-scripted. - Dan G
-
Exactly. Just because he's not releasing them now, don't mean he can't release them later. I agree with the decision to hold the photos. - Dan G
-
That insult makes no sense. Try harder. When you come up with changes to the story, let me know. - Dan G
-
Did you think you were replying to me? - Dan G

I've been reading the stories all along. There wasn't anything new in your Google search results. Obviously you don't have any examples of changes to the story. - Dan G

I'd go with take him alive (if possible), and use effective interogation techniques (not torture) until he told us everything we wanted to know. Try him in court, and if found guilty, let him rot in solitary confinement for the rest of his life. When he dies, return his body to his family to be buried as they see fit. I put the importance of American values and security above the importance of sick revenge fantasies. - Dan G
