  1. I think Obama's always been quite clear that he thinks taxes should go up on people who make more than $250k. I don't remember him ever saying that the cutoff should be $1M. - Dan G
  2. In all fairness, I bet the friends he grew up with were from the same part of the country. - Dan G
  3. I knew that was coming, I really did. I'm not saying people can't have a giant truck to go to the grocery store. It's just stupid. There's a difference between saying that people don't need something, and people can't have something. If they want it, then they can buy it, but they shouldn't simultaneously bitch about the fuel bill whilst driving a three ton dualie around with 10 pounds of groceries as the big haul of the week. - Dan G
  4. I didn't say that no one needs a truck. I said that a lot of people don't need a truck. I don't really understand why Toyota can't make a hybrid Tacoma or Tundra. I think they'd fly off the lot. Of course, I don't understand why they don't sell diesel versions of those in the US either. - Dan G
  5. I doubt it. If that were the case they would have dropped the price when tax incentives did not prove attractive enough for people to want the car. I think they priced it at $40k because they generally suck at making and selling cars. - Dan G
  6. Cigarettes still sell pretty well, too. People don't always make the best choices. Putting the climate change aspect to the side, I'd bet that most people who buy a large truck or SUV don't really need one. The household budget impact of an F-150 is probably twice that of a Prius, depending on driving habits. It always boggles my mind when I see people driving giant trucks that have clearly never left the road, and probably never had anything bigger than a suitcase in the bed. These are the same people who slow down to 2mph going over speed bumps in their vehicle designed for the Baja 500. - Dan G
  7. You didn't use the word 'failure', you just said: So, you're now in support of the Prius. Aren't you the one who posted the old 'Hummer is better than the Prius' thread? How many Hummers do you see driving around these days? - Dan G
  8. Exactly. It's not the concept of the Volt that's the problem. It's the shitty execution. - Dan G
  9. Yeah, the Prius is doing really poorly: From http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-29/toyota-prius-escapes-niche-to-surge-into-global-top-three.html I find it amusing that you want for alternative technologies to fail so badly that you'll delude yourself into thinking a successful car like the Prius is actually a failure. And yes, the F-150 sells better. It's not in competition with the Prius. The F-150 sells better than anything, does that mean that all other cars are failures? - Dan G
  10. It's overpriced, doesn't perform very well, and is ugly. How do you explain the success of the Prius? - Dan G
  11. Give me a break. You served in Vietnam, and for that I thank you. But since then you've been a hippie drug addict and substance abuse counselor. If there is anyone who doesn't need to know, it is you. It's obvious you are blowing smoke. There was nothing lost by Obama announcing the results of the bin Laden raid. There were also no essential TTP revealed in subsequent interviews about the raid. The former Special Operations guys bitching about the loss of security from public discussion about the raid are full of shit and anyone even remotely connected to the community knows it. - Dan G
  12. I'm sure you're quite the expert. It always makes me laugh when posters with military experience assume they are the only one who ever put on a uniform. What, prey tell, would have been gained by denying the raid on bin Laden's compound when everyone in the world knew about it from non-US sources? - Dan G
  13. You are the personification of the character Stephen Colbert plays every night. I thought that character was a caricature, but apparently it's an accurate portait of todays conservative. You've got to be joking. Do you think the Pakistanis were keeping quiet about it? What?!? The sanctions against Iran are the strongest they've ever been. And right now no one, except France which I assume you abhor, is providing support to the freedom fighters in Syria. Obama got shit for the very limited support he provided in Libya, including suggestions he be impeached. And now you want him to do the same thing in Syria? Get your story straight. No he hasn't. He hasn't done anything but support Israel. Support does not mean refusing to question them, especially when their actions break the same treaties you seem to hold so dear. - Dan G
  14. No one says Obama gets a pass on his past. It's something to take into consideration, but it's not all there is to the man. He's obviously capable of changing his mind, which some people see as a virtue. Anyway, everyone does dumb shit when they're young. Hell, I was a Republican. - Dan G
  15. Get a video of your next dive. Ask the videographer to get shots of you from above and from the side. You probably have some asymmetry that you can't even feel. If you just can't fix it, the wind tunnel is perfect for this. I once had a student in the tunnel who's right leg was stronger than her left. When I got her legs even, she automatically kept putting them back uneven becuase they felt even to her. She simply couldn't believe that they were uneven. It didn't really click until she saw video of herself flying with what she thought were even legs, and they were nowhere near each other. - Dan G
  16. Yes, that is exactly what the government meant when they said domestic terrorism groups are likely to recruit veterans because of their military skills. - Dan G
  17. Was the British art house film about killing Bush really popular here? I must have missed all the fanfare. - Dan G
  18. I don't think fear is the right word. One of the reasons I quit was that the risk/reward equation didn't add up. It wasn't that I was more afraid for my personal safety, it was that the reward was less than is used to be. In other words, the risk side didn't really go up, the reward side went down. If you need to call that fear, then whatever. - Dan G
  19. You've got to agree that there is some role for government in regulating product availability. You simply must! For instance, most people do not have a problem with the government banning the sale of nuclear weapons, or anthrax spores, or nerve agent. The use of all of these things would harm not only the user, but others in society. Some people think that the widespread use of incandescent bulbs harms others in society by requiring more powerplants, more pollution, etc. You may draw the line at a differnt point, but I think you agree that one of the core roles of government is preventing the actions of one citizen from harming another citizen. - Dan G
  20. Sorry. I get heating talking about Afghanistan. Everything else in the post stands, care to respond? - Dan G
  21. It's going as well as can be expected since we ignored the conflict in favor of dick dancing in Iraq for the first seven years. At this point, however, we might as well pull out and prepare for the invasion part II, which I predict will happen in about ten years. That will be in response to the next terrorist attack on US soil planned by the Afghans or with their support. I wish the US had the balls to devote the proper resources to Afghanistan, but it looks like we'll have the 1990s all over again over there. Thanks in large part to ignoramuses like you. - Dan G
