  1. Wait and see what the investigation turns up, and the outcome of the trial. As there are complaints on this thread about chants of bloodlust, i will refrain from expressing my personal view on what should happen to them if they are guilty , but stories like this make me sick and depressed. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  2. I do not profess to match you with legal expertise. What I can say (and I am not applying this specifically to the legal profession) is that our culture has developed into a culture of victimhood, and that very culture is exploited by people in all scenarios including the legal system. Having had a family member seriously injured by the actions of another person where the race/victim card was played and the guy basically got off with a slap on the wrist I stand by my position. You routinely hear defence lawyers in the news (not on TV drama's) portraying their clients as being someone we should sympathise with, or who has been treated unfairly by the investigators. Now if that is simply being done for the benefit of the camera and not in the actual courtroom I cannot possibly know. I am also constantly reading about sentences that are ridiculous considering the crime. I tend to equate one with the other, or at the very least with the fact that we are a culture of victims. If the flaw in my argument is one of correlation vs causation then I am all ears. We have a ridiculous young offenders act here that basicaly says a 17 year old who commits a brutal crime is a mere child and cannot be held fully accountable. A man here managed to avoid jail for child molestation because he was victimised by some sort of stress disorder. Fortunately saner heads prevailed and that decision is being appealed. When we had a police cheif (Fantino) who was actually willing to crack down on gangs while not kowtowing to special victim groups, the spineless mayor decided (in an obvious attempt to woo a certain victim community) to fire the cheif, and replace him with someone who would not try so hard to do his job. When a bunch of gang bangers decided to turn Yonge street into their own personal shooting gallery on Boxing day and a 15 year old girl was killed, the general public responded by demanding an end to the usual thug coddling. In response the spineless wonder of a Prime Minister (Paul Martin) made a statement to Canadians reminding us that "these shooters are victims of exclusion" in an apparent attemp to woo special interest victim votes. This does not just apply to the legal profession. in a case where I was a witness in an academic misconduct case, both myself and the professor in charge were found to be partially at fault for not having done enough to "protect the guy from himself" No biggie, I was not offended, and I suppose it must be frustrating from your perspective. I just hate when a thread that could lead to a discussion turns into a shooting gallery. Even if it is happening to someone else I find it disappointing. If I am wrong, tell me why. I just jumped on you because from the outset you seemed to be firing nothing but one liners, and appeared to be looking for a confrontation. . I do not hate lawyers, nor do i have contempt for the legal system as a whole. I (and many others) observe that whatever the argument, it does not seem to be serving our interest. Since I pay taxes which fund the criminal justice system which makes decisions that affect my life, I will not apologise for expressing my cynicism. If I am not supposed to voice my misgivings about the justice system simply because I am not a member of the legal profession, then I suppose I should not offer criticism of the government since I have never been a politician, I should not comment on our health care system because I have never been to med school, and since I am not a professional chef I am not qualified to complain about a meal I order in a restaurent. Rife with errors? I suspect that no matter what profession you are in, people outside your profession who discuss it (and have the right to if it affects them) will probably be basing some of their arguments on common misconceptions, even if they may have a valid point about the macro issue while confusing some of the micro issues. If you are tired of responding at length why not avoid comment at all? Again you came on here immediately jumping on the condescension bandwagon. Thats not an attack on you, just an observation of a trend on SC that ruins many a thread. Incedentally I do not mind answering repeated whuffo comments (although in fairness I have not been at it for as long as you so maybe I am just not jaded yet). Anyway, to clarify. Are you suggesting that the criminal justice system effectively provides justice to victims of crime? That is not an invite to a battle. I Just do not see it that way, so I would like to hear the argument for why victims of crime should be content with the status quo. 3. Yeah, your right. It is kind of irritating in retrospect. Sorry, won't happen again. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  4. Oh here we go. The expert bit. Hate to tell you there sunshine but one does not have to be a lawyer and/or know subsection whatever of such and such a code to pick up a paper and notice that these kind of dickheads always seem to get ridiculously light sentences and that the disadvanteged victim bit is always played up. Nor do I have to have studied law to notice that there seems to be an unfathomable unwillingness to hold these clowns fully accountable for thier actions. Incidentally, I did not profess to be knowledgable in the law (and as a matter of fact on another recent thread I amplified the fact that I do not have a law background) but you shouldn't let that stop you from putting words in my mouth so you can jump on the condescending expert bandwagon and inflate your sense of manhood. If you are a lawyer then why did you not simply offer a counterperspective and make your point like an adult instead of snipping away like an ankle biting heckler? Does it require that much thought and effort to offer a constructive input rather than simply doing the speakers corner court jester routine? If I felt that I had offended you and you were genuinely upset at something I said I would have clarified and/or sought a polite resolution, but since all you have done on this thread is snip at people with remarks like "flying spaghetti monster" and a sarcastic response to someone elses not being surprised, I just figured you were the type who only comes on here to beat on your chest and pick fights. Therefore I treated your remark with the contempt it deserved. In fairness I can't complain. People like you add to the entertainment so don't let me stop you. Feel free to get in the last word.

  6. I second that. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  7. I agree with you, but unfortunately his lawyer will pull out all stops to make the jury see him as some kind of disadvanteged victim of exclusion who is merely misunderstood. By the time he is done the judge and jury will be crying their hearts out for this thug. I would not be surprised if he did minimal jail time. Heres hoping that I am wrong on this one. 8. Anything short of being gutshot and left to die screaming in agony means he is getting off easy. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  9. Knocking him out will not shut him up. Dickheads like that allways turn around and sue over the fights they start. Not to mention a criminal record which will be a hindrance to employability. Unfortunately in the profession you are in there are not a lot of resources to deal with this sort of crap. Try telling your boss you are thinking of quitting. Come to think of it can you not just ignore him? Maybe he stays on you because he can see he is getting to you. There is nothing stopping you from verbally abusing him back. If all of this changes nothing then ask yourself if this job is worth your health. 10. Check out this article. There is a link to the video in it. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/10/elderly.robbed.ap/index.html It was just sickenning to watch this video. It would be really lovely if this thug ran into a Bernard Goetz type or at least got killed by another loser thug. With luck he will "resist arrest" if caught thus forcing the cops to "use the neccessary force to defend themselves" and perhaps trip and fall several hundred times on the way to the station. If he gets in front of a judge, his lawyer will undoubtedly scream all kinds of crap about him being disadvantaged and all that bulshit, so the guy gets some joke of a short sentence, thus denying any real justice. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  11. While a cop may not be a lawyer it amazes me how many people feel that they are more legal savy than the cop they are talking to. Buddy of mine and I got into a wee bit of trouble when we were young and the cop had that look that he was going to just scare us and then let us off with a warning. Then my budy with all of one or two whole college law courses under his belt started smat-assing the cop with all kinds of legal bulshit that sounded like it came straight from Matlock. The usual shit terms like warrant, probable cause...etc. I think the fact that the cop saw the oh-shit-don't do-that look i gave my freind and it saved the moment thus allowing us to still get off with a warning. Why the fuck do people think they can outwit a cop with legalese (lawyers excepted)? 12. Thats why the gangs in quebec are so violent. They need to be able to keep up with the cops. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  13. I don't know, the Surete de Quebec (recall their handling of OKA) have some real winners, not to mention the hull police force. A native woman in hull was hit by a car and when her freind tried to get the cops to help they looked at her unconscious freind and said "She's not hurt, she's just another drunken squaw" and they picked her up, carried her over to the curb and left her there. She died of internal injuries and as I recall, neither lost their job. On another occasion a man was walking a great dane off the leash to prep it for a dog show and they came and gave him a hard time. When he tried to explain, things got rough and nauturally the dog started barking at them so they unloaded 13 bullets into the dog on a crowded street in the nightclub district and then finished it with a shotgun blast to the head (caught on tape). No reprimands. I always be real carefull around quebec cops. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  14. Police in Quebec have a bad reputation. I have personally had a run-in with one yet I am law abiding to a fault. They have had a history of intolerant attitudes and excessive force even to the point where pro-cop types find them to be too much. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  15. I don't get why some people need to argue with a cop. If you are right then sign, appear in court and state your case. Even if the cop is a goof, why push a confrontation? Too easily avoidable. He overreacted but she is still an idiot for argueing with him. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  16. Oops sorry. Looking at my post a second time I see it might have come across as sarcastic, but that was not my intent. I was just making fun of the lady you were describing. 17. Wow. It's got to be true then!! You must immediately send a check to that particular televangelists ministry if you are to be spared from hell. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  18. Pretty much. I try to avoid putting down those who do beleive in it though, or saying it's ridiculous. I can say that absolutely nothing I have experienced in my life would support any of this paranormal stuff, so I draw an inference from that. As for God, I won't say that I don't beleive. I have my beleifs but I do not subscribe to a specific religion however. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  19. True but you would think that religious groups would be all over it if it happened. Imagine what an effective marketting tool it would be if you had some guy on one of these religious shows talking about how he was going to hell until the defibulator slammed him back to life. It could so effectively play on fears, particularly when he talks about how unlikely it is to get the second chance that he was lucky enough to get. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  20. That is so completely speculative and subjective that no, it doesn't stand to reason at all. It is simply what you happen to think, probably based upon your own personal values. I don't see how so. I am not really religious and have no strong feeling or values with respect to this issue. I just feel it is logical that since most of us have both good dreams and nightmares, it seems that someone who has some degree of religious beleif but has some unresolved issue could potentially have a bad afterlife dream instead of a good one. Why do these hallucinations only go one way? I do that every morning at 5:10 a.m. Then I turn off the clock radio, take a shower, and get ready for my day. Me too. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  21. Ok so your position is that these are merely dreams or hallucinations. But since dreams are somewhat influenced by your real life experiences, subconcious urges/fears ..etc, would it not stand to reason that a person who has lived a terrible life and is wracked with some sort of repressed guilt would have a hallucination where they did not see a white light and all the loved ones who have deceased? Has anyone like that had a dream where they were being sent away by St. Peter and dragged down into hell by demons? If not; why? If so; why are we not hearing about it? Why is it that everyone hallucinates about a white light and all the feely goody stuff? Why don't some wake up screaming in terror begging for a second chance? 22. A freind of mine was doing it and he told me about it so I went to his dropzone. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  24. I've heard many versions of that warm and fuzzy experience. I wonder if anyone in a near death experience finds themselves facing hell. Do only good people have near death experiences or are there terrifying near death "afterlife" stories/experiences out there? 25. I'm sorry but i do not understand your point. can you please clarify. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
