Supreme Court to decide on Use of Deadly Force in Police Pursuits
Richards replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
I know the idea of letting a fleeing suspect get away is galling, but if it's obvious the suspect isn't going to slow down, is it worth it to, say, pursue him at high speed to the point where he runs a red light at an intersection and t-bones some innocent motorist's car and kills him? Especially if the driver isn't some felon but only committed a traffic offense? So the question is: why did the officer force the offender's car to crash? If it was a reasoned decision that that was what was minimally necessary to prevent imminent harm to innocent people, then the officer's act may be reasonable. On the other hand, if the officer's main motivation was simply to apprehend the driver for the offense of speeding, then the use of deadly force was excessive. *** If he didn't stop the kid, there could quite possibly have been an innocent bystander hurt or killed. The level of force was reasonable. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -
the bad, "Yes, I know I'm going to hell" joke thread

I'm sorry but I cannot see the humour in that. It is both disturbing and repulsive that you do. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -

When your conduct threatens the safety of others then stopping your conduct before you can harm someone takes precedence over any of your rights. This is not to say that there shouldn't be restraints but this story would reall piss me off if some guy/girl with two kids to feed ended up paralyzed. From a moral perspective this kid has no argument. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -
Does anyone here (besides me) think this is ominous?

Now is education fully funded in India and China (I honestly do not know)? I would be curious to see if it just relates to engineering or if this pattern persists in other feilds, and if so how much is due to the rising cost of education in the west? Are those countries simply investing more in their human capital than us or is it purely a function of them having a more motivated population? Warning: Grisly Hate Crime Unreported In Major Media

Sadly I have run into many people with exactly that attitude. It really is unfortunate that the desire to see whitey get his comeuppance gets in the way of any constructive dialouge. Oh, those poor put-upon white people! He asked a fair question. Why is it that crimes committed by white heterosexual males against anyone else seem to be paid specific attention in the media while the media is also pressured to avoid bringing attention to crimes by minorities against whites. For that matter why is it that everytime a white person offers their own greivance about double standards they are met with mockery? Does that fact that another group faces challenges that white's don't, mitigate any greivances that white people may have? If we are truly interested making diversity and multiculturalism a success then I would expect that we might wish to stop getting off on every opportunity to see white people "getting theirs". I am no sociologist but in my humble opinion (based on personal experience and observation) this sort of "stick it to whitey and mock him for whining about it because he deserves it" mentality serves only to breed resentment and ultimately backlash thus furthering the divide between races. In case you haven't looked around most big cities, there is tremendous diversity. One of the groups that has to coexist respectfully with all others (and be equally respected by all others) is the white demograph. As they are no longer the majority in big cities they too can be victims of race based crime and racism. If they cannot voice their concerns about racial issues like every other group does without risk of mockery then they will seek to further seperate themselves from people not like themselves. Why would I want to live with a group of people who are allowed to live under a seperate set of rules and expectations than me? If that happened I would probably just move further out to the suburbs. Why not keep this sort of debate constructive? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -

Unfortunately, I think you and I both have a pretty good idea why it was not applied. Remember it is only hate/racism if white people do it. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -

Hate Crimes Legislation is stupid. Rape is rape, assault is assault, and murder is murder, regardless of the colour of the victim. Just another dumb law apparently designed to make special interest groups happy. I guess it comes down to personal choice. I disagree with criticising the senior citizen in the article because he may very well have felt it neccessary, but then I still do not know enough about the situation to say he made the right call. I will generally make the resist/submit decision based on which seems most likely to get me out alive at the time. Fair enough, I shouldn't project my risk limitations on others. I am just not the overly heroic type, so I will not be inclined to take a risk unless I absolutely have to. I am not an experienced street fighter so if I tried to take a weapon out of someones hands I would very likely get injured. In fairness Kamikaze82's argument does have merit. While I would kill in a heartbeat if my life depended on it, I might be inclined to try the passive approach if I felt the guy only wanted my wallet. If it seems that the guy simply wants the money and will leave if he gets it, then for the $40-$60 I have in my wallet I would rather not risk my life, he can have it. Not to mention his actions could have had consequences for other people in the group. If I had my wife with me then my decision would be based on which option caused her the least risk. If it costs me $50 bucks to get her and I out of danger then it's a bargain. That said if I felt that he was going to do harm anyway then I would have to attack. I would have to know exactly how the events transpired there before I could say whether or not I would have made the same decision. Bit of a straw man argument. Having a gun handy in case the bum does mean harm and pull a weapon of his own does not mean blowing away everyone who looks intimidating. It simply allows you to not be a victim if he does mean harm. I could be wrong but i do beleive guns are banned in Columbia and Northern Ireland. If that is the case I would speculate that both of those places have a history of minimal gun violence. So I take it... you're not black? As a matter of fact no. I have heard somewhere that there is a 1 in 10 Gazillion chance with some sort of gene issue ( is recessive genes the term?) that two white people could have a black baby, but come-on. Trying to say it is mine when the baby has the ethnic identity of the father. It would have been amusing if it wasn't so sad. An ex of mine who seemed to always expect her "boat to come in" and got into one of these multi-level marketting scams, dumped me for a black guy she worked for. He got her pregnant shortly thereafter and dumped her. Some time after giving birth she had the fucking audacity to claim that the kid was mine despite the obvious fact that the kid was also black. Not entirely sure what I ever saw in this particular rocket surgeon. Last I heard she was on welfare...no big surprise. So... Where does this touch on CONCEALED carry rather than the Right to Bear Arms? Mike. Well, if I cannot carry it on me I do not have the means to protect myself when I leave my house. As for the concealed aspect, I personally would not feel comfortable openly displaying a firearm for a couple of reasons. One if someone is still willing to harm me regardless of the gun he is at least forewarned about where I have it (hip, shoulder) and stands a better chance of preventing me from pulling it. Also I would fear that there may be some crazies out there who might see that as my trying to look like a tough guy and it could provoke an incedent. If it is hidden, I do not make myself a target, nor can anyone who wishes to harm me prepare themselves for it. I simply have it there as an unpleasant surprise for Mr. thug if foresight and/or the ability to run fast cannot get me out of harms way. My comment was not directly a right to bear arms argument so much as a right to self defence argument which includes gun ownership and the right to have it accessable if neccessary.
