  1. Do you try nicely first? I always took criticism with the utmost humility because I figured the person doing so was trying to prevent an accident. That said, I think if you start by being abrasive you may cause a receptive student to shut off. You may have seen a certain error 10000 times and are fed up with it but the guy you are correcting is new and is making it for the first time. If you at least try to treat this person with respect (this does not mean to sugar coat the criticism), he might see you as a valuable source of info and may use you as an example for his own development. Had a skygod shred me for an honest mistake and I thought I was the dropzone pariah untill one of the instructors came over and told me he does that to everyone, and to take him with a grain of salt. He was quite experienced and I could have developed a tremendous respect for him, but he ruined it by doing that to me (and every other newbie who he felt like flexing his dick on). Why not give newbies the benefit of the doubt and then if it becomes apparent that they are not heeding your advice then go with the "dickhead" remarks? 3. Your right. I tend to use a selective filter when being given advice. I am usually quite humble and gratefull to anyone at the DZ who helps me with any aspect of the sport including those who were criticizing me (I felt that meant they wanted me to live long). That said there is always going to be a skygod who will dump on you to make himself feel better, but 90% of e people I ran across genuinely wanted to help. Anyway thanks for the input, Cheers My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  4. Why does everyone equate effective teaching that adds clarity of instruction to spoonfeeding? I agree entirely that you need to make the standards high and people should have to earn thier marks but I go nuts when people say that students learn the material better if they are forced to struggle to figure it out. For example in many undergraduate business courses (accounting, economics..etc) there is a tendency to not provide solutions for end of chapter questions even though you are not marked on these. Some professors feel that allowing students to compare thier solution against a solution manual so as to get effective feedback qualifies as spoonfeeding. Why? How do you measure your progress and know if you are missing the point unless you have a means of doing so? Some of my favourite profesors were hated by other students because they apparently gave killer exams but as far as I was concerned that was fine because up until the exam they taught in a manner that made complex ideas seem understandable. Test hard yes, but teach poorly no. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  5. Never going to happen here. Speakers Corner behaviour will always pop up as soon as someone says somethng that others disagree with. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  7. Of course this is typical. Doesn't everyone do that? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  8. It might not be that simple. Granted neither you or I know what actually happened and maybe it is possible that she initiated this. In fairness I don't even know what carbon dating is so I cannot say whether that was a reasonable question on her part or if she was just being the obnoxious student looking for attention. Neither you or I know whether or not his in class response was appropriate or even accurately described in her post. What is of concern is the apparent fact that he seems to not want to let the issue go. There are procedures in each university for discipline and if he feels that there should be some long term consequense to her for whatever transpired then he should go through the proper channels. Deciding that he will block her out for the rest of the semester is not acceptable. She is a good student and his conduct can have a serious negative effect on her grades and subsequent application to other programs. If she fears that he will screw with her in the long run then it does not hurt to at least bring that concern to someones attention so that if it does happen then at least she is on record, and she is not going to come across as a student who is simply pouting because of a bad grade. If she cannot go to his office for help and other students can then she is being put at a significant relative disadvantage to her classmates and that is unnacceptable on his part. If I was in a position of authority over you and I was making it hard for you to advance out of some personal rift, and nothing you did seemed to change that then you would not be satisfied to "suck it up cupcake". She should try to talk to him in a non-confrontational manner to seek resolution but if that fails then she may need to seek help from someone in the institution. How successful she is as a student should be dictated by her ability, not by him. Again she may have been in the wrong (I don't know) but she has the right to be given a fair chance at progressing as a student, or at least a fair hearing. 9. Sorry, I did not mean that it did not matter. I just wanted to remind you not to let the frustration of this course spill into other courses. If you allow this to eat you up then it can impact your performance in the other courses. 10. That can be a short term solution but if she is struggling with the material and needs more regular attention then other professors or TA's might not be willing to regularly help her. Not a bad suggestion nonetheless. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  11. The problem is that he refuses to see her during office hours. If she needs help but cannot get it while others can it does put her at a significant disadvantage. Even if he grades objectively, he is indirectly causing her problems by not making himself available. I would normally agree with the idea of "don't start anything" but in this case if she lets it go he can indirectly hurt her grades. 12. If he is a dick about office hours with everyone then so be it, but if the students he likes are able to drop by and you are not then you may wish to seek help at the university. As I stated before I had a professor pull that crap on me and I did not fight her on the issue because her husband also worked there and was quite senior (strangely me and him got along fantastically) but I regret that to this day. To avoid getting into conflict I gave up the opportunity to demand a fair shake when it came to support and did not get as much out of her courses as other people. In retrospect I should have been more willing to stand up to her. You may wish to approach him and try to see if he can agree that he does not need to like you to be a good teacher. As Bilvon pointed out he cannot directly screw your grades but if you cannot approach him for help you will be at a disadvantage to your classmates. Guy just sounds like a goof. Try to seek resolution. If that means treating him like you respect him while you think he is a bowel movement so be it. Do not seek conflict with someone in his position. Remember...tenure means that while his decisions can be reversed by people higher than him, there are no serious consequenses to this clown if he causes you problems. It is just one course, so do not let it destroy you. Incedentally, if chemistry is not your area and you are in the 80's how are you doing in the courses you are good at? 80's are not to shabby for a course that is not your strong area. Wishing you the best on this one. Hey, with any luck the guy might have a heart attack. Cheers and good luck My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  13. I hate to say this but I would avoid going to the Dean. It could cause more problems than it solves. You may want to speak confidentially to another professor that you trust just so you are on record but do not go starting anything (and going to the Dean qualifies as starting something). Universities are powerhouses and if this guy has tenure he is pretty much untouchable so don't tempt him to prove that to you. Be polite to the clown and regardless of how he may try to needle you in the future do not take the bait. If he cannot get you worked up he will move on to another student. It may just be that he is a dink, but not malicious with grades. If he blatantly marks you differently than other students he will have a hard time explaining that on an appeal. What he can do is be significantly less helpfull to you during his office hours than he is to others (I had a professor who did not like me and she pulled that shit on me). If he pulls that on you then you will need to take action. Again do not take any course of action unless you have to since you can get on the blacklist as a problem student if you go above his head. At some point in thier student life every one has to deal with at least one goof. 14. The risk you take when you surf random threads. But I guess thats an IOU for 1 beer as a courtesy. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  15. Maybe they did not see the sarcastic smirk you flashed when you typed it. Now I know you are joking about that But seriously, even if the singer is serious I think most people have the intelligence to realise that extremist views like that are not reflective of christianity as a whole. I really doubt that most people in our society are that willing to smear an entire group based on the actions of a few dickheads. For example no-one that I associate with beleives that islam promotes terrorism, despite the fact that we hear muslims complaining about that. Some will judge all christians/muslims based on the actions of a few, but it wouldn't hurt to give people a little more credit than to beleive that they are predisposed to stereotype based on hysteria. 16. Then the issue is one of not recognizing the role of african americans in general American History period. Would it not be more constructive in the long run to integrate their role in our history into existing history classes, rather than having a seperate emphasis on thier role? I see the need for acknowledging how they took part in shaping history but my personal feeling is that these sort of racialy specific recognition months/ceremonies/awards etc serve only to amplify the divide between people of diferent backgrounds. The end goal is admirable but the aproach is flawed. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  18. Possibly Maybe. Again there are freak extremists in every religion. Some "muslims" fantasize about killing infidels and getting 72 virgins, some "christians" scream about how god hates gays and even go so far as to protest at soldiers funerals. Very distinct possibility. Many others on this thread have made that comment. 19. Maybe there is truth to the claim that the extreme anti-gay crowd are closet queers. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  21. In keeping with my last thread on intolerant islamic cab drivers, here is a christian fucknut. Religious nuts! I wonder of he is one of the losers protesting at funerals http://break.com/index/homophobic_christian_rock.html My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  22. Bless you for having the courage to confront him with this. He will thank you some day. Still shaking my head thinking of how close he came to an immense offense to alcohol. 23. Precisely. I don't understand how any religion can be so intolerant (and I don't mean just Islamic faith, I've seen my share of wackos of every faith)...just blows my mind. *** It is a sign of the times I guess. I didn't know it qualified as intolerance when a minority did it though.
