U. of Miami Football Coach Bans Gun Ownership
Richards replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
From what I read in the article it seemed like he was saying that they are prohibited at all times from having a gun, not just at practice. For your work to say "do not bring one here" is one thing, but to say "do not even use one on your own time" sounds a bit harsh. Apparently that is allowable but it does not seem right. I have no idea. I do not go to church (I think they call people like me agnostics but I am not sure), but from all the devoutly religious people I have talked to the general idea I get is that suicides go to hell no matter what. I also kind of got the idea that anyone can repent for anything and get a second chance if they really mean it. I hope you are right and that my interpretation is as ridiculous as it sounds. If not then I would be curious as to whether it is a loving God who really is compasionate or simply a God who has authority and uses it to suit his whims and command utter subservience. Either way, I have a great many misgivings about the teachings of most churches but that does not neccessarily mean I am an athiest. Understood. If what the coach meant was not to bring guns to practice or when they are travelling with the team then that is his right I suppose (as it is fine for restaurent owners to have a no guns rule). I interpreted the article as though he was saying that merely being a concealed carry permit owner was enough for him to chuck you off the team and that is where I was a bit put off. It was like he was saying that someones personal life was his business. Anyway, I guess if the law allows him to do that then it allows him to do it. I do not agree with it but hey. So if you are not accepting government money then you can ban anyone for any reason or are there limits to this? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -

Sure it may be legal, but is it right? Why not ban people for the music they listen to, or the choice of entertainment? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -

Is it illegal to carry a gun in Miami or do they have CCW? If it is legal i don't see how he can prohibit it. It is their personal business. Why tell people how to live? Hi Mamajumps, 1: I was not questioning the existence of God. I was questioning someone who seemed to be absolutely certain that it was made up. I do beleive in the idea of God I just cannot neccessarily subscribe to one specific religions version of events. Maybe Christians are right, maybe Jews, maybe Muslims...etc. I doubt that someone could go to hell for having done their best to subscribe to what they were told gods rules were just because they were brought up under the "wrong" version of events 2: I will not be flaming away at you. I do not come here to pick fights. I enjoy a good discussion/debate but I generally try to treat people with respect and courtesy. Oops. Sorry. I will be carefull not to do that again. Gosh I just don't get that. If the mother of that girl takes her own life due to the trauma of losing her daughter she will definitely go to hell while this guy gets to go to heaven. Not a fair system. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

I hope they take their time and make that sick fuck scream in agony. Wtf is he talking about with "apologizing to her in heaven". What on earth makes this guy think he is going to heaven. The right thing to do would be to cut all economic ties...but I won't hold my breath. The judge who sentenced her, the thugs that raped her and whoever else was involved in this atrocity should be whipped until they die of shock and bloodloss. I don't see that. I saw an interview debate with her and when someone started grilling her effecively she resorted to slogans and one liners. Anyone can sound quick witted when they have the time to go over a written peice of work and utilize editorial assistance, but Ann did not measure up in the face to face debate I saw her in. This question may seem rhetorical but, how then do you reduce the abuse and stop the creeping sense of entitlement that comes with such programs. I once thought that applying user fees to doctor visits (not unlike an auto-insurance deductable) might help but people wouldn't hear of it. I had apparently committed sacrilege by even suggesting such a thing. If people could realise that like any other resource, health coverage can run dry if abused, we could perhaps manage it effectively. Unfortunately it all becomes politicized and then the lobby (special interest) groups start demanding some non-neccessities become a right. Once that happens, politicians looking to gain political favour might allow frivulous use of it, and the downward spiral starts and then dollars that should be going to critical lifesaving treatments start going to things like breast implants, liposuction, fat farm subsidization, gender re-assignment surgery..etc.. If anyone can suggest how to prevent that, I am all ears. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

Agreed. The fact that ours is failing does not mean that it cannot work. Mind you the issues in each country will be different. One of our problems is there is systemic abuse of the system (people going to the doctor for headaches, sore muscles from working out, hangnails...etc) and an unrealistic expectation of what health care should cover (there was a huge scandal in the news that ours covers gender reassignment surgury for some silly reason). With American culture being what it is you might not see the abuse we have here in Canada and conceivably it might work. Had to do one mandatory law course during my B.Comm and couldn't make heads or tails of it. Drove me crazy, wondering who on earth would want to subject themselves to this torture for a living. Congratulations on having the ability to make sense of it all (and of course on all your hard work).
