  1. present doubts or questions ... okay... question. How inclusive or exclusive is "to be in Christ?" Some would say it is VERY exclusive ... my denomination, my doctrine, dogma, etc. others will say it is very inclusive i.e., Carlton Pearson and his "universilism" teachings. Or is "to be in Christ" some where in between. Which is it? doubt. My understanding of theology is good enough to realize people misuse certain quotes of JC to do harm, but they fail to ask do these difficult passages follow the gist of his teaching. In other words, they interpret a difficult text in its own light instead of interpreting it in the light of JC's clear teachings on a particular subject. IMHO that is their error. However, here is the doubt ... many of the commands attributed to God in the OT are hard to rationalize against the teachings of JC. If I use that same principle of exegesis, then that leads me to doubt that what they wrote was the literal word of God, but possibly more of how they understood it in the context of their world view. steveOrino
  2. what questions are you asking? Presently or in the past? steveOrino
  3. I for one have no problems stating I have had doubts and continue to have questions. I think being a guy that questions doctrine and theology moves us closer to God not farther away. (At least it seemed to work for Martin Luther) I use to think the original poster's methods were invalid as they tend to polarize people, but experience has revealed there are many methods that work in far as "evangelizing" While some are not my cup of tea, I should not stand in judgment of them or their methods. However, if one is to follow Christ they would do well to observe how he gave the good news. He typically went to people who were prepared to hear from God. It is interesting to see how that comes about. For instance in the story were Christ heals the demonic man from the Gaderenes he refuses to let the man follow him, but instructs him to first go home to his people and give his testimony. Christ was aked to leave the region by the former demoniac's people (ticked off by losing pigs no doubt) Christ did leave. Later he returned to that same general area and they were very receptive to him this time. It is there he fed the multitude again (the first was with 12 baskets left over - one for every tribe of Israel -- in this case there were 7 left over, one for every canaanite tribe in that area) I wonder why they were receptive to his message this time? A nice theory is the former demoniac prepared the way by his testimony. The lesson I learned is -- sometimes you break up the fallow ground for others, sometimes you plant, and at times you harvest -- even what you did not plant yourself. steveOrino
  4. What's up with the PINK jumpsuit? steveOrino
  5. After a recent engine problem I had to bail out about 2K. I knew I was above my buddies house and he was laying out by the pool. It would have been nice to land in his backyard, but there were too many obstacles to land my Stiletto 150 safely. I chose his neighbors yard instead. He came over to me and said I thought you guys were jumping in my backyard to get me to skydive more until I saw two of you on their reserves.

  9. Tom, what did you find out? Are TM who have an "I" rating but only a maufacturer's tandem rating going to have to go through a TI course? steveOrino
  10. steveorino

    Why did you...

PRO - I love jumping into a FB stadium -- my narcisistic personality I guess TANDEM - I was getting bored with doing video. It was either wing suit or TM. I took the TM course and it has made my jumps alive again. I love to jump with people who are jumping for the first time. Advice for AFFI -- get plenty of practice eval dives. steveOrino
  11. It is not flaming when you point out the obvious irregularities in his statement and the added risks ANY camera poses on guys with low jump #s. Flaming would have been something like "You have no business jumping ANY camera at 130 jumps! yada, yada, yada" I didn't read anything like that. heck the closest thing to that was mine -- it was far from a flame. steveOrino
  12. Okay, aside from the fact that there are dangers with ANY camera strapped to your head, especially for someone with 130 jumps ... that camera is a major snag hazard, and videographers have yet to find a non DV tape camera that functions that well in skydiving. I'd leave it for the bike trail. In other words. Get another 100 jumps minimum under your belt and then if you are ready buy a real camera. steveOrino
  13. Exiting from 1k, I going straight for the reserve. If your main has any snivel to it, you're screwed. If your main doesn't have snivel to it, you're still likely moving too slowly to pop a Cypres in the event of a mal. Even a high speed mal isn't going to give you much time to deploy your reserve by the time you figure it out. Remember that we fall 1000' in the first ten seconds. Your main is already going to open slowly due to the slow speed at which you exited. You *really* think that exiting at 1K and going for your main first is a good idea? Doug, read his jump #s and consider the source ... steveOrino
  14. Thanks ... I appreciate that. And truthfully, I don't mind the Afghan War not being front page news every day. steveOrino

    Tipping

No tip is necessary. I don't think twice about whether i wil receive a tip or not, but when I do I'm very surprised and happy. Funny thing, my very first paying tandem was a 20 year old kid and he tipped me $20. My tips are usually $20, but I've had a $5 tip and a $50 tip. steveOrino
  18. YOU are the reason I became an Instructor. Well, people like you. I don't know when it wears off. I'm not sure there is a #, but the pull can wane. Mine did when I had about 1000 jumps. I was going to either get a wing suit or get my Tandem rating to "change things up." I got my TM rating. I love it! IMHO The key is to keep it fresh. There is always a skill (FF, wingsuit, CrW, etc ...) or rating to get that keep everything fresh. I'm glad you're a part of us.
  19. Thanks for the reply Tom: I understand USPA wanting TIs (or TMs) to have a USPA rating. I really have no problem with it. I seldom gripe about fees and other such BS about $. I'm more concerned about what must I, as a USPA IAD-I, and USPA coach, do to get a TI rating along with my TM rating from the maunufaturer? As far as I can tell I must go to a USPA TI course somewhere ... okay. I don't agree with the rationale since I have an "I" rating, but I will if I must. Is that what I have to do? steveOrino
  20. To me ... opinion coming ... it seems silly to make a TM who is already an IADI or AFFI attend a class to be be a TI ... just my opinion. steveOrino
  21. I really don't think my question would classify as bitching. I was simply trying to find out what I must do this year to keep being a Tandem Master at my USPA DZ next fall. steveOrino
  22. I guess that idea is subjective. I've videoed lots of TMs over the years and some made the video boring --- it looked like THEY were bored. Others made it look fun and some made it look silly. Donna Wright was always fun to video as she made it look fun (to me) So did Terry Goode. Plus I think my "Helen Keller, Tandem Master" for a few seconds is funny and all the tandem students love it. steveOrino
