  1. It looks like there's a booming economy in Florida. Boom periods tend to cause labor shortages, which in turn make minimum wages issues irrelevant. It's when the cycle heads south and unemployment rises that the impact of mandatory minimum wages are felt. Also, the businesses that do hire at minimum wage are a relative small portion employers, so the overall impact to an area is relatively minor. That doesn't change the fact that those minimum wage employers do get hit.
  2. Considering you heard this on the radio, asking you to provide a link or a transcript would be out of the question, eh? How convenient. Was it on NPR? The radio is very convenient when I'm commuting. How predictable that you miss the point. You mean these people? http://www.npr.org/about/people/board.html Tim Eby is a Republican? I didn't know that.
  3. It depends what your definition is. I know of many illegals I reckon would not fit your definition. I think people would be surprised what the number of illegals coming from Western Europe, Canada, Australia, NZ, etc... is. They don't count. Why not? According to who(m)?
  4. It depends what your definition is. I know of many illegals I reckon would not fit your definition. I think people would be surprised what the number of illegals coming from Western Europe, Canada, Australia, NZ, etc... is. It sounds like you're basically talking about white people. They make up something like 6% of the total. More than four out of five (81%) illegal aliens are hispanic. Fifty-seven percent of all illegals are Mexican. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet to say the average illegal is an uneducated, hispanic male, who doesn't speak English above a rudimentary level.
  5. Speaking of adoring media... compare and contrast:
  6. It's not always that clear cut. I was an "illegal" for 7 years. I reckon during these 7 years, I may have contributed to society as productively as some "legal" immigrants have, and I'd venture at times more than some plain old corn fed nationals. Are you representative of the average illegal?
  7. It's not a matter of who, but how many and the fact that "how many" has grown 1500% since 1970 (when the total number of illegals was 750,000). This huge influx of predominantly hispanic illegals has helped create numerous areas in this country where people speak no english, are completely ignorant of American culture and have no interest in assimilating. I don't fault the illegals for trying to come into this country. From a risk/reward standpoint it's a no brainer. Our government has been enabling this situation for quite some time. Both parties have an interest in not cracking down. There's a net cost to this country by not remedying this situation. Hopefully, someone in Congress will stay focused in the actual problem, instead of catering to partisan interests.

  9. Probably off telling some school children, singing Christmas carols, to shut the fuck up!!! I keed.
  10. I know this is a little off topic and I'll probably get labelled with the obvious, but did anyone catch The Biggest Loser last night? It was some kind of ultimate grand finale for a reality show about who can lose the most weight. I loathe reality shows and this one has always seemed cheesier than most, but last night they had all these fit, nice looking people who were almost half their previous body weight. A bunch of them were under 60% of their former weight. One guy had lost 55% of his previous weight. 330 to 150. They all had these depressing stories about their obese former lives... and now they're all fit. It was impressive.
  11. Although I do not justify it, I don't think that holding a flag upside down is half as bad as wearing your own Country's flag in underwear, bikinis, and just about any other object. That depends entirely who is wearing it.
  12. Apart from the statutory definition (and ramifications such as taxes), what makes an illegal immigrant different from a legal one? Is there any difference? Would the difference evaporate if we abolished artificial immigration restrictions? One group came to this this country through legal channels. They met specific criteria and respected our laws to gain access. The other completely disregarded the process. All industrialized nations have immigration laws. These laws exist to protect the general welfare of citizens. Look at it this way. If you have a home, that you pay for and maintain, do you have the right to say who is allowed to come into your home? Do you have the right to attend college courses for which you have not paid tuition?
  13. More reading on the subject. It's ill-informed remarks like the above, imo, that characterize the anti-immigration position. _______________________________ I read what you posted. Once again, the author is confusing 'legal' immigrants with 'illegal' immigrants. I'm referring to 'ILLEGAL' immigrants. I wish to God, folks would get that straight. Get your facts straight then, come back and we'll discus it. Chuck Chuck Come on, Chuck. You know and I know most of the arguments made on behalf of illegal aliens don't hold water if you separate them from the arguments for all immigrants.
  14. And God said: But the cost for this perfect companion will be an arm and a leg. Adam replied: What can I get for a rib?
  15. What a gem. This one's also a beauty. Perhaps you should read up on the history of immigration. Ever heard of the "anti-coolie act"? Are you familiar with Castle Garden or Ellis Island?
  16. Love the hyperbole. If the laws of SD say the governor has the authority to fill vacated seats in Congress, then he can do whatever he wants. Governors appointing replacement canditates to Congress is nothing new. Typically, they appoint someone from their own party, regardless of the previous member's affiliation.
  17. How did that Great Society initiative work out?
  18. I can remember a number of illegal alien amnesty programs beginning in the 1970's (when I worked for the food stamp office, and it was a significant issue for us). Maybe because I'm in Houston, but I think that illegal immigration has been with us as long as the long border and unequal standards of living and opportunity. But now with increased security, people can't go back and forth as easily, so they stay, hunker down, and bring family up, instead of just working and sending money home. Wendy W. IMO, the reason this is such a big issue has to do with the number of illegals entering the US each year. These numbers have dramatically increased in recent years. Although I admired Reagan, his Amnesty program was a major screwup.
  19. Maybe, in '08, the Democrats can offer up someone who isn't an arrogant, cardboard, twit. Face it... in '04, it came down to who was the less undesirable. Your guy lost. Hey, Senator Kerry.... why the long face? I am NOT a Democrat. I am an anti-neo-con. Foley wasn't my guy, although I'm quite sure he wouldn't have fucked up as badly as Bush has. What does Foley have to do with this thread? Just another of your attempts to muddy the waters? BTW Do you think I'm a neo-con?
  20. Wow... sending erotic emails to people above the age of consent is pedophilia? What are they calling what Studds did, then? A couple of months ago you neo-cons were falling all over yourselves trying to get distance from Foley. Now he did nothing wrong? Please explain. You seem to have a knack for overstating your point, while completely missing others.

  22. The operative word here is "credible"... which doesn't apply to any of your examples, but overwhelming does apply to the claims of Clinton a sexual predator. Your analogy is the poorest I've seen in a while.
  23. I agree. What most people fail to note is that up until about 15 years ago, the overwhelming majority of immigrants who became citizens, did so through the proper chanels! That's the kicker. Legal immigrants and illegal aliens are two distinctly different groups... the later being criminals by their presence in this country.
  24. What's the comparison here? For every American who goes to Mexico and pays for medical care, one million Mexican illegals get medical treatment in the US, for free? Seems like a fair trade.
