Thanks for the link and the civil reply. The article didn't say much about modern celebrations. I did find a site that said: http://www.openhearth.org/basics/demographics.shtml I'm guessing the overwhelming majority of solstice "celebrations" in the US are merely the noting of this astronomical event. Happy Solstice, everyone.

Anybody wonder who the Department of Homeland Security is keeping files on? Do you have a reason to be afraid?
-
I not sure what you're talking about. I've never questioned the history. What have I said in this thread that gives you that impression? I don't.

And those brilliant chemists who cooked up all those designer drugs must be proud of their contribution to society. PCP, MDA, TCP... woohoo... let's party!!!
-
One big difference is the vast majority of the US population is well aware of skydiving. Most people I know are well aware of the solstice - I guess Americans must be dumber than I thought! Way to miss the point.

Why does there always have to be "a link". Celebrating solstice is an ancient tradition. We do it for summer too - big event at Stonehenge. I'm well aware of it's ancient tradition, but I could not find much about modern-day Winter Solstice celebrations in the US. All I did find had to do with small fringe elements.... or are Wiccans and Neopagans relatively mainstream? I ask for a link because you seem to treat it as something beyond astronomical significance and I thought you might be able to provide a source. You reluctance to provide a link gives me the impression you're trolling.

Yep, which is why I liked him too. Then we got garbage and look where we're at. Did you know part of the reason Edwards ran for President was his chances for being re-elected to the Senate were between slim and none. A senator who can not get re-elected in his own state is a good candidate for President??? Go figure. It obviously means the conservatives demand their criminal have a military history, preferably with war. Then they get their perfect criminal in Bush and look the other way. Still drawing a big blank. Why, calling Iraq a VN? Calling McCain a scumbag because he wants to pump up Iraq? So you can avoid answering the issues? I keep getting the impression you think everyone who is on the right side of the fence (and a good number of those who straddle it) all share a consensus opinion and that they/we all have a substandard intellect.

Sounds a lot like what people were saying about pretty boy John Edwards. I have no idea what this means. You sure do seem to paint with a broad (and negative) brush.

Could you give me a link on the modern day celebration of the Winter Solstice? Particularly in the US? As long as I've been aware of solstices and equinoxes, I've always noted them. It was typically along the lines of acknowledging the physical significance of the event. I know of the rare Solstice parties in the US (typically hippies looking for an excuse to party) and the crowds at Stonehenge. But the decorating trees, burning Yule logs, giving presents, having parties to celebrate the Winter Solstice is news to me. Is this actually common practice? Or are you just trolling?

Funny, Bush voters usually would write that, "Because he looks well and speaks good." Of course mine was a question, not a statement. And this qualifies him to be President of the United States of America?

WOW You do seem to read a lot into things.

Hey Kallend, Is the difference in saying someone's post is shitty and saying You're an asshole!!!, mere semantics?

White House forbids former aide's critical op-ed
NCclimber replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
True. But they blocked the author, not the New York Times. This was my point, that I have questioned all along. I guess I consider the matter of who was blocked (a contractually obligated former employee vs. a national paper) as something more than semantics. Exactly. Exactly! I thought he was more of an independent contract, who shops his pieces around. Toodles -

Were Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch in on those plans?

I'll be happy to live my entire life without seeing it's contents.

Sitting on the board of directors, years before 9/11, is not the same as being "in charge of security for the world trade center".

I look forward to the breaking story about Hoover's files on JFK.

oooohhhh! ooohhh! a semantics argument! Will you two get to the meaning of "is" next?

White House forbids former aide's critical op-ed
NCclimber replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
You can dress it up all you want. I didn't expect you to own up. Just to be clear here, you claimed the NSC blocked the New York Times from publishing the column. This is untrue... or at least unproven. Nothing has been written about the NSC telling the NYT they can't publish it. What is known is that the NSC told a former CIA (and NSC) employee, who is obligated to permit the government to review writings for publication, that his article was not approved for publication. There's a huge difference between difference between the government exercising it's right to restrict what former employees say publicly and the government blocking a major press organization from exercising its first amendment rights. Huge Difference! I'm still waiting to see proof that "the right" claimed hundreds of thousands of jobs would be lost if Florida raised the minimum wage. -
Your link says nothing about Marvin Bush was "in charge of securtiy for the world trade center".

I've noticed you like to (incorrectly) cite Tommy Franks, when it comes to the prospect of Marshall Law being imposed. Are you interested in his take on Iraqi WMDs? This is from an interview last year:

Look at it state by state, and I'm sure you'll find that by far, the largest increases were in those liberal paradise that abridge the 2nd. Did you actually look, or just guessing? I see homicides in Houston are way up. Houston isn't a state.
