if you cross 'behind' the airplane, keep in mind that there is a wake of turbulent air there. If the plane is in a REAALLLY steep dive and you are directly behind it, it could actualy mean that you crash onto the airplane, cameraman-meets-RW4-team style.. Do be carefull..:) I think Perry is also quite an authority on flying with planes, maybe he could enlighten us with some wisdom and do's and don'ts? JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Anyone jumping Sony's HD camera yet?????
mccordia replied to basehoundsam's topic in Photography and Video
The HC1 has several different auto-focus speeds that you can choose from the menu. Another cool thing about HDV. You can deinterlace 50/60 (PAL/NTSC) fields per second HDV footage, to 50/60 FRAMES per second slowmo's, and still have a more then 100% quality broadcast-res image.. Makes for beautifull slowmo's. And you can take HDV footage, and actualy crop and stabilize shaky camera footage for better framing. I'm currently editing some (non skydiving) HDV footage, and the quality is amazing. This is definately the future.. buyng the A1E (both for work and skydiving) is on my 2do list for januari/febuari next year.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? -
Here ya go..(attached) Quoteand I'll have to agree with what he said - it is definitely hard on the arms, in my S3 at least. *** What was hardest to me was to get the right pressure on the arms wings, so I could fully open up the leg-wing. In the beginning I was flying it with my legwing closed halfway, which flies pretty stable, but goes down pretty fast. It took a few jumps to learn and fly it completely 'openend up' Putting my head back (something I'm not doing in these pics) and stretching my back, so I'm completely flat, helped a ton. But I'm also still learning... We should try and get Andy Ford to post here..if there's anyone that can comment on backflying, it's him. And seeing Omars recent video's, he's also one that could probably shed some more light on the best way to learn...? There's also an older thread somewhere (where I was asking for tips on learning to backfly

Could you hook me up with your sugar-daddy too? I could definatly use an Acro, SugarGlider and S-Fly in my gearbag as well JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I think replacing the suit names with the flyers names would be more honest. The two flyers chasing you on that jump in S3S were only a few meters behind you, and where keeping up with you and matching your speed. Just not overtaking you. But I put this down more on pilot skill. Since on the 2 next jumps during that same weekend, the guy leading the flock in his S3S during a couple of the high speed/distance races beat the rest of by half a mile or so. Both in speed and distance..and S3S and S3 flyers came in second/third/forth...and phantom didnt manage to catch up. Even though it was all the excact same flyers on the exact same type of jump. I think there is a big difference in the way people fly when looking ahead to the flock or flyers they try to catch up with, compared to someone leading a flock, just doing a 'maxed out solo' way of flying. Mentioning that the excact thing (flyers not catching up) happened again on the next jumps, but the other way around (with way more difference in terms of distance), would have been nice too... I have a bit of difficulty with people saying it's 'the suit' when it's in ones favour...and suddenly blaming it on pilot-skill when it's in anothers favour. In terms of speed (although no doubt, phantom is fast, and rates above a GTi) I think you credit too much to the suit, and too little to yourself. Remember that you where already giving people a hard time in your classic JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I dont know whats more frustrating....waiting for your suit to arrive, or knowing it's there at home, waiting for you, when you have no way of trying it on or flying it the coming few days Enjoy it as soon as you can...(and post some standard 'making a fool out of myself pictures', arms wide..legs spread..and cool look on your face..it's illegal 'not to' when you get a new suit) JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Collapsing my legwing a bit. That's also what made a world of difference for me (both for barrel rolls and backflying) In the beginning I never closed the legwing when 'roling over', and that ended up costing me a lot of altitude. Once I started doing that it got easyer. In the beginning you could also try backflying it out of the door (something that seemed easyer to me, instead of flipping over in full flight in the beginning) Once you get it flying on your back (mostly on your arms) it gets easyer to push out and open up your legwing. After 20 to 30 seconds of backflying my right arm sort of gives out (recent motorcycle accident)..it feels heavyer then flying on your belly... Also pay attention to people 'trying' to guide you...otherwise you might end up backflying a flock into the north sea JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

If you go to Florida, come to Zhills, that's where all the birds hang out! I think you could get a couple of birds crazy anough to do a tandem-flyby if you decide to do a jump.. That way you could see a flying wingsuit in action, close-up JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I got to fly a matter suit last week, and was amazed at how much it killed my arms on just one flight. I think it's all due to the fact that it's 'new' muscles I was using, where I was way more used to the pf/bm kinda suits..palms up instead of down.. I could especially feel my shoulders burning.. How was the palms down flying on your muscles...? The position in which you fly (just body-wise, not talking flight performance) is a bit like MTR2/S-Fly suits right? Was it also heavier to you then your normal 'gripper' flying? (Or am I just a big, untrained pussy)...and if it was different or maybe lighter/easier...tell us!
-
I think Tristan has flown both Phi and Firebird at the Teuge wingsuit weekend. He only put one jump on both suits I think, but he could probably tell us a bit about how both suits compared for a first flight (in terms of speed/stability) JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Does anybody know if there was any valluable data collected (or used) from the tests that Patrick DeuG. Jean-Loic (or Matter, dont remember who that was, saw that somewhere), Adrian Nicholas and Birdman Inc. have done? It just seems soo weird, and totaly puzzles me as to why so many companies would put up the money for something that would seem to be more or less useless (in terms of the profit it would make, designwise) Did they all put their efforts and resources into that for the greater cause, or where all of those done from a PR/commercial standpoint? I think he already specified his use..."compress my video and post online, or just burn cd's for my friends" So probably nothing beyond skydivingmovies.com and home-use.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Yea..I actualy wrote about that a week ago... I only just started going more head-low last week, and managed to cover way more ground and feel way more speed (and somehow also went much, much slower down then normal..probably due to increased lift from the speed?) Went from 45 to 47 mph fallrates into 40 mph and even 35 mph fallrates... I think this is especialy advice to take to heart for people who potato-chip constantly...who try to fly it way to much head-high (at least thats what I did in the beginning) JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? -

Great article...feels good to read a bit more in depth on what is usualy covered in between the lines in the over 21.000 posts already on this wingsuit forum :) I only recently started to 'fly' more, and was quite often doing the floaty thing (as I think a lot of people are, especialy in the beginning...often slowing down almost up untill your stall-point -
I think Birdman is constantly updating their product-line. Even in S3S's and Phi's that are coming out now, there are already subtle changes, tweaks and updates compared to suits that where delivered only one month earlyer.. I saw on a few newer suits jari had with him that the new suits tabshad again to click/tie the feet/wing up when walking The soft, but thicker neoprene back (same on firebird as S3S) is quite nice..less sweaty, and feels more solid..I've jumped it (on my s3s) in warm weather, and its getting colder now...I like it :) JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I think the biggest issue is 'some' people not always keeping projects/computers 'clean' while working. Just puting your files on 20 different folders and dirs all over your hard-drive, and thinking 'I'll clean it up later'. But usually, the next project starts before the firs one is finished and the cleaning up never happens. Just take time to archive and organise.. After each project I make, I export the raw, but clean-cut footage to 2 DV tapes (1 backup:) and export the edited project back to a 2 DV tapes. Then I create a DVD MPG file of the edited project, and then clean all folders...and my HD is empty again... It takes time..and it sucks..cause it costs you a few hours...but in the long-run it saves you much, much more.. The exporting of 'raw' footage (usualy captured from 2 or 3, to sometimes 20 different tapes) to one or two clean tapes is also quite handy. That way, you can clean/re-use your orginal tapes..since a lot of times, a 60 minute tape only has about 20 minutes of stuff (or less) that you actualy want to save for later..... I spent 5 days going through all my tapes from last year a while ago. But now I jst have 6 DV tapes, all with footage ready to edit. Instead of the 50+ tapes where all the footage was originaly on... If you want to burn stuff for your friends, look for the free TMPEG encoder. It lets you add batch-jobs, so you can encode mulitple files to mpg1/mpg2 (VCD/SVCD/DVD) Fow .wmv, adobe premiere has the free included Media Encoder, and there's also a lot of seperate options, like Media Cleaner etc. Just use the search button and look for 'compression' and/of '.wmv' and you will probably find a lot of stuff already written about the subject here.. And then let him fly across the atlantic channel, and call it the first human unassisted flight... :) JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

hard wings on your back, wheels/gear on your belly... So what you are basically thinking off is an airplane that is just missing the front window/nose, with a human head sticking out? I think such a thing already exists...we jump from it on a regular basis hehehe JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I'd never... from a balloon you would need a head down launch which would consume LOTS of altitude till you can really fly. That's my opinion. In what way would that be any different then launching off a cliff (aside from the lack of non-forgiving-when-hit wall behind you?) A balloon can be exited just like you'd do a 'normal' base-exit... if you're not launching with a runway/wheels/catapult or off the deck of an aircraft carrier that they'd heli-lift up to the top at Kjerag, a normal launch from a solid piece of ground would be no different from a balloon (which you could fly to 12.000 ft or higher if you wanted to, so you have some alti to mess up?) I'd give it a few tries from a hot air balloon first JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I'm quite fond of this photo I took on a trackingdive past summer. And I'm quite happy with this photo, wich is part of quite a nice series of photo's taken during the same weekend. But I havent been jumping stills that often yet, so my selection is limited.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

From my comparisons with other suits, seeing people fly 3 or 4 different suits of several brands for the first time in a few days. The S3S actually seemed like one of the easiest suits to fly. Even though low jump-numbers will probably mean you're not flying the suit anywhere near the maximum performance, it still flies really well in even the most horrible positions of your body. And once you get to know the suit, you can start to discover and experiment with the hidden can of whoop-ass that the S3S has inside, in terms of speed/glide etc. What amazed me most, compared to the Skyflyer1 and Skyflyer3 (S1: +-20 jumps, S3: +-150 jumps) is that the more rigid wings seem to really help you at both slower and faster speeds. Even when you're bending your arms back/folding them in, or doing whatever to drop faster in 'falling-like-a-brick' flocks...the rigid wing inserts maintain a clean profile, and thus good airflow over the wing, and you don't get the flapping you see in some other suits. This means that you are still in complete controll when flying fast, or when flying close to stall-speeds and even when you're dropping out of the sky like a rock. The wing will always have a clean profile and will not distort... The rigid wings also assist in backflying quite a bit, and causes way, way less flapping then what you see in a lot of other suits when you look at footage online at skydivingmovies.com Pilot skill also comes in here, but the rigid wing-ribs take a lot of the difficulty out of it.. But the thing I'm only just discovering is the great speed and lift you can get out of the suit.. The S3S has only been around for a short time, so the true speeds top pilots can fly with it will probably take a while to surface..but believe me when I say it feels like you're flying a fast jet-fighter.. It does add some things like 'more wing to deal with at pulltime', and if you get into a spin on your back, the big legwing will definitely give you a run for your money etc...basically all the 'big suit' problems you could get into trouble with...but I think most people won't if they just take it easy, and don't rush into things without proper instruction/preparation and (pull)practice, both in the air and on the ground (before the jump) In general, I think you'll like it....
