  1. In this room, there's got to be a bigger porn-search expert than me.
  2. I think he'd still be -- ahem -- screwed on the h, a, r and d.
  3. Since kicks can bounce off the post, go through and still count, I'm going to say that the post is in bounds. The defender makes the catch for the interception. If he doesn't down it for a touchback, then I think the fumble is a live ball. Touchdown: offense.

    The Sharp End

Some days, that's exactly what I call it, too.

    The Sharp End

I've seen it. Speaking from a climber's perspective, the angle, e.g., exploring what the "sharp end," means to various disciplines, felt contrived. However, the cinematography was hands down the best I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot. Peter Mortimer is a film maker at the absolute top of his game -- and the entire industry. The footage of Dean Potter BASE-soloing (climbing unroped with only a BASE rig to protect him if he falls) is nothing short of stunning, both visually and conceptually. For those not up on the lingo, "the sharp end" is the end of the rope you're tied into when lead climbing.
  7. This has nothing to do with DZ.com specifically. I just thought I'd throw out there for all you Exploder users. Sounds serious, but what do I know? http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/12/security-experts-stop-using-internet-explorer-now-msft
  8. FYI: I Just posted an Announcement.
  9. There's a discussion here if you're interested. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3423239;page=unread#unread
  10. If you haven't been around for a few days, you may not know that, starting Friday, we had a particularly bad ad running. It is worth noting that the ad was using the Coors brand, but wasn’t connected with the company in any way. The ad messed up the way the site loaded for a lot of people and attempted to prompt users to download a malware program. The fact that the ad launched on the weekend made it more difficult to isolate and fix. We responded as soon as possible, but the ad was intermittently visible to users between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. As always, it's a good idea to make sure your antivirus software and computer settings are up to date to block this sort of thing if it squeaks through the defenses of whatever websites you visit. If you are concerned that your computer may have been affected by the ads, it's probably a good idea to go here and follow the directions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-extra-antivir Going forward, I and the Namemedia geeks are doing a few things to prevent similar problematic ads from making it to the site in the future: 1. The ad folks at Namemedia are beefing up their tools for detecting ads that contain adware/malware/spyware. 2. New ad campaigns from new advertisers will no longer be launched late in the day, especially on Friday. This will ensure that the right people are available if there’s a problem. 3. We’ll be installing an emergency ad-kill switch that will allow me (and a couple other select folks) to quickly remove ads if a similar problem comes to our attention. Okay, that's about all I have, except for this. The buck has to stop at somebody, and on Dropzone.com, that's me. I promise I'll do my best to stop it from happening again. Thanks folks, Jay
  11. Hi all, Any information you've received that the loss of the DDL is due to a Namemedia decision is mistaken, including the info posted by bolas last night. To be completely honest, I've only ever heard of the DDL in passing, and I certainly never made a decision one way or the other regarding its existence here. Sangiro mentioned it to me once, and in fact, my initial reaction was to leave everything as it was. I don't know this for sure, but I seriously doubt anybody at Namemedia has even heard of it, other than me. It appears to me as though bolas assumed I had it on the chopping block, and then took the action he though was apppropriate. He certainly never contacted me about it. It simply wasn't even on my radar until now. Though I have ultimate responsibility for everything on the Dropzone.com, there are still several areas of the site where I don't actively participate in the management. The Forum is one of those. HH is still in charge of it, and this is his decision. However, in the last day I've heard a couple stories about the drama associated with the DDL, and a couple folks provided me with threads that gave me a little more history. Based on that and this latest weird episode, I'm more than inclined to back the decision. Jay PS: If I do only one thing well, it's maintain an open door. There's probably 50 people on here right now who I've conversed with directly via PM or email about whatever they wanted to discuss. I'm not saying the DDL would always be here if somebody only contacted me about it, or that the answer to everybody who emails me is a guaranteed yes, but making assumptions about my motives and closed mindedness is a reasonably good way to not get what you want. To those who have trusted me enough to reach out with your concerns, thank you. I hope I didn't let you down.
  12. Hi all, Just an update. I'm between meetings on this right now. I'll probably have info to post around lunch. J
  13. Dropzone has always been vulnerable to this, and to some extent or another, every website is. But you certainly have a point. I'll be with the other NM folk this week to talk about steps we can take to keep this from happening again. Now I'll ask for your patience and understanding while I try to make that goal a reality. Thanks Chris. J
  14. Crap. I hate that happened to you. I'll direct sangiro to this thread, but we've had this discussion before, the result being that it would remain the buyer's and seller's responsibility to do enough due diligence before transacting. In the meantime, I'll continue to squash the obvious ones. Jay
  15. Anything's possible, but it sounds buggy to me. Will you do me a favor and forward all of them to this email: j_ung(at)rockclimbing.com? Once I get those, I'll pass this through channels to see what's up. J
  16. Are you sure all the folders are empty (or as empty as you want them to be)? Also, check to see if maybe a few really big emails are accounting for it. Post back here, and if that didn't help, I'll seek technical support. J
  17. Hey, that link has been deleted. I'd like to read what others have experienced with this. My Mac was slow, but not compromised. Seems that Mac's using Safari weren't affected? ltdiver No, it's still there. I locked it to keep the discussion contained in a single thread. There's a little info from users on Rockclimbing.com, too: http://www.rockclimbing.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2037976; May be there for you, but not for me. ltdiver Hmm... something's wrong with the link. The thread is still in Bonfire, stuck to the top.
  18. Okay, ads will be up sometime tomorrow, minus the culprit. I'm going to spend some more time following up on things, and then get some sleep. I'll be back online all day tomorrow to make sure things go smoothly.
  19. Before today, I didn't think my opinion of Coors Light could be any lower. Those were the days. I don't think you can blame this on Coors Light. No, I certainly can't. I can blame myself, and that's about it.

  22. I'm getting reports on Rockclimbing.com that the following works for what the rogue ad leaves behind (if your own anti-viral didn't stop it). The trojan may be called Extra Antivir. Click below and scroll down just a bit. If that looks familiar to you, follow the instructions. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-extra-antivir
  23. In the meantime, please enjoy an ad-free rest of the weekend.
