A suggestion... If you go down to the bottom of KTLA's website, there is a "Terms of Service" hyperlink. A little more than halfway down is the phone number and email address of their Copyright Agent. While meandering; one might look at the second paragraph at the top of the page regarding their "Copyright" Clause to compare/consider it to the existing DZ, Base, Rock, etc. .com's "Terms of Use." Thanks. I'll try to contact them once they hit office hours.

I'm not sure that's correct. Is KTLA.com affiliated with the OC Register?
-
I've sent a second message to the KTLA webmaster: I'm not sure there's anything else I can do here.

More news: ktla (the article cited above) is not the station I put in touch with Karen Lewis. Apparently there are multiple TV stations involved here. I put Karen in touch with kabc. I've never had any contact whatsoever with ktla nor any other station, news outlet, blog, etc. I'm still trying to find out why the hell it's credited to this site, but their website has nothing listed for a contact number, except a main line, which is useless. It is entirely possible that they were in contact with Karen separately and she gave them permission, though that doesn't explain why it's credited to DZ. If they're not in contact with Karen, then the photo is being used without permission. It's that simple.

It seems incredibly strange to me. The TV station emailed me this morning for permission to use it and I told them specifically that permission is not mine to give. I did, however, put them in touch with Karen Lewis, who owns the shot. She emailed back (CC-ed me) saying they could use it if they met certain conditions. That was almost two hours ago, so it's possible they did. Regardless, I just emailed the TV station again and told them that if they did not already have permission, they need to remove it immediately, and if they do have permission, I need the photo credit to reflect it correctly. And that's the end of my involvement with this. I don't know if Karen gave them permission, BUT I CERTAINLY DID NOT. If I had that would make me about the biggest dickhead I can possibly imagine. Obviously, many of you can also imagine it. [sarcasm]Thanks a ton for that. [/sarcasm]

YES! Although not terribly soon. We may (MAY) be able to launch something like this by the end of the year, though. It's actually already on my big ideas list.

Before I respond, please understand that I'm not in charge of the forums yet. We're just yakkin' here, right? Over on rockclimbing.com, where I am in charge of the forums, we moderate a lot less than they do here. Now, some folks might think that's awesome, but quite frankly, our forums there are a lot less useful for climbers looking for climbing info than DZ's forums are here for jumpers looking for jumping info. The signal-to-noise ratio is far worse there. I'm currently trying to change that, but the culture is so entrenched that I have to find ways of doing it that don't involve more aggressive moderating, lest I have a sitewide rebellion on my hands. If that site had been moderated like they do here all along, I wouldn't have the problems I currently have. So, while yeah, the mods here are more willing to moderate than they are on RC.com, I don' think that's necessarily a bad thing. Anyway, the point is, DZ mods have always done what they feel they need to do to keep the forums focused and on track, and I kind of surprised them with this additional functionality -- they weren't looking for it. So, I don't think this will result in a net increase in moderating, just a net decrease in how intrusive that modding is. Bare in mind, however, that on both sites, transparency is important. If you want to know what happened to a post, just drop a note in the PM box of the forum's moderator. I'm sure he or she will be happy to explain. Don't take this to mean I think things are perfect. We're all humans. We all make mistakes, but the forum rules outline recourses if anybody thinks a moderator went too far. And, like most of the rest of us, moderators respond far more favorably when users phrase objections in a non-accusatory, non-insulting manner, just like you've done here.

Quality feedback, JohnRich. Thanks. When the new tool was in development, I opted for the most superficial hide we could get, so as to interfere with the flow of the thread the least possible. Looks like we need it to be a little less superficial, though. I'll pose the question to the developers and see what they come up with. Maybe there's an easy way to hide those posts from the search function, too. J

There's a high possibility that this what PhreeZone said, but I did get in touch with our ad guy about five minutes ago and tro be safe, he's going to pull down the non-google, non-campaign stuff, and we'll look into this further Monday morning. I'll be on the road for the next several hours, but I'll check in again once I get back home.

3 mb doesn't seem like a whole heck of a lot does it? I think I'm required by law or something to say this, but premier members get 50 mb of email storage. Okay, now that's done, I'll look into upping it some. In return, please realize that DZ has a LOT of registered users and it really does add up quickly. Stay tuned. Jay

I'm going to keep looking into this, but initial word is that zero new ads have come on line since the Coors thing.

I'm pretty curious about this, too, since I'm also not getting a thing. If you can provide a little more info, though I'm sure I can help. What does your warming say?

Hi all, I just want to thank everybody for being part of the sites slightly weird 2008 and say I hope you'll be part of our sure-to-be-slightly-weird 2009. (That's how we roll .) Anywho, happy whatever holidays you celebrate! I hope the season is filled with fun for you and, of course, blue skies. Jay

I think this is taken care of. Is this still happening to anybody? -
I submitted a bug ticket for this. Anybody seen this anyplace else on the site?

I'll put a ticket in right now. Is it happening elsewhere? -

I don't understand. Were they posting the same thing over and over on purpose, or is that the bug? Is this happening anyplace else? -
Thank you for your kind words!
-
No way! If I cheated, I would have gotten it right.

I don't have any skydiving toys, so I posted one of my favorite non-climbing toys. (That's not me in it, though.)

Snap! Oh wait. Are you talking about me?!

Looks like my reasoning was semi-sound, but no cigar. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/If_a_ball_is_throw_and_bounces_off_the_upright_and_back_into_the_field_of_play_is_it_a_live_or_dead_ball
