IMO Putin is allot like trump except he is intelligent and cunning. He wants to line his pockets first. Beyond that he wants to re-create as best he can a Russian hegemony wherever he can. Distraction, the use of proxies, realpolitik actions are all designed to boost Russia and knock down the US.
