Oh really? Try to give us an estimate as to how many times. I ask because I've been living in NYC for 11 years now and I hang out at jazz clubs in Harlem frequently. For one of those years I actually lived in Harlem. NOT ONCE have I had a bad experience. When I did live in Harlem that year, some people in the neighborhood and their families that I got to know greeted me by my name when they saw me. In no other neighborhood in Manhattan have I had that experience. I think being a stupid redneck has even more drawbacks. Fearing people because they're different from you and projecting your stereotypes is a form of disrespect that might egg on a good mugging. I think you need to get over your fear -- sounds like you're full of it. Next time you visit NYC, take a nice long walk through Harlem at night -- no pickup truck, no hummer, no guns. You'll see it's really not that bad at all. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

#1: two years ago when I visited Vietnam -- doing what the locals do: drinking the beating heart of a snake and its gall bladder in 120 proof rice wine. The Vietnamese say it gives one sexual fortitude. #2 Rumpelminz with Milwaukee's Best as a chaser. Was so bad that I lost it all 30 minutes later. #3: Coors Light Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I can bet you the majority of the people on strike don't even want to be on strike -- they want and need to work, but since they're stuck under the terms of the union they have no choice. Oftentimes in these cases it's about the higher-ups in the unions playing their games and not about the thousands of workers all being greedy people. Because the USA is replete with ignorant rednecks whose idea of America is the gun, the flag, the church, and hating France. My guess is that these Americans you met were NOT in America; they were in your country or somewhere else. That's because the majority of rednecks have no desire to travel to places where people talk and look funny. Would probably explain why you haven't met many Bush supporters. It's because Kerry sucks the big one. To give you an idea of just how badly he sucks, our f.cktard president won a second term. There is a large number of Americans that support this f.cktard president -- slightly over 50%. They relate to the stupidity and find it inspiring that a redneck like themselves can occupy the oval office. He appeals to his supporters' idea of patriotism by exploiting issues that have no relevance in peoples' lives (gay marriage, for example) and by making war. Materially, there is no reason whatsoever for the majority of his supporters to support his policies since his economic policies benefit only the corporations and the rich. What does the word "idiot" mean to you?
masterblaster72 replied to narcimund's topic in Speakers Corner
You'd be right if Bush were intelligent, thoughtful or successful. I think the definition is quite fitting for the Clinton bashers. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -
That's a 20+ year-old Rodney Dangerfield joke....classic. I agree wholeheartedly, John Kerry is an idiot. He had all of the ammo he could possibly have had to beat a stuttering jackass like our president, and still could not. What else could he be. d'uhh... I believe that's what the NRA is for -- the second amendment (well, at least the second half of it, since they forgot the first part "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State"..but that's another discussion). The ACLU is about defending the first amendment. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I'd agree with you if it weren't part of such an overt marketing strategy. Frank Luntz, one of the republican party's main marketing masterminds (the guy who changed the term global warming to climate change, tax cuts to tax relief, etc) issued a memo a while ago that stated: The same guy who tells the president to use these three terms ad nauseum -- basically to use an emotionally loaded event to scare the public into listening to him. The same sh.t that got him re-elected. Funny how the majority of people who live in the place where 9/11 actually happened aren't scared and aren't falling for it one bit, while so much of the rest of the country is eating it day in and day out. If you don't see through this tactic and see absolutely nothing wrong with the president abusing 9/11 for his advantage EVERY single speech he's given since 2001, then I think you're not paying enough attention. Remember Faces of the Fallen on Nightline? Construed as a left-wing conspiracy, when all that was being done was acknowledging those who gave their lives to the country. Something that should be expected, yet since it went against the interests of the administration, it was painted by the right as left-wing and unpatriotic. Disgusting. I don't buy this report -- it lost me when I read that the Drudge report is left-leaning. Are they joking or what? I'm not saying that the media isn't biased. But I don't think there is an across-the-board left-leaning bias in tv news. If a republican politician is asked challenging questions by a journalist, the right cries left-wing media bias. But the journalist is just doing his/her job. Unfortunately, most journalists aren't asking the right questions, so I don't take mainstream news seriously anyhow. Maybe this is my bias, but I think that liberals are much less of a danger to free press than conservatives are, simply because (and I know many conservatives may disagree with this) liberals are more tolerant to opposing views than conservatives are. Example: the editorial prominence of Robert Novak from supposedly left-leaning CNN compared to the prominence of Alan Colmes from Fox. There's no comparison. Same garbage as always. He uses these same keywords (terror*, freedom, liberty) EVERY time he gives a speech. Americans are so brain dead that they buy it. He used the terror* keyword 23 times this time around. Surprisingly, liberty only once and freedom only three times. And of course the token invoking of 9/11. Yawn. Pimping fear as always. Dogs can indeed look up, and in places you and I wished we could. I am truly envious of these dogs that walk the sidewalks of New York in the summer. In short and at the very least, we can start by taking it more seriously and making it a diplomatic issue and using our diplomatic ability to negotiate with China NOT to send the refugees back to North Korea, perhaps by giving them some kind of incentive. At the same time, we would need to make it clear to the Chinese government that it's about saving lives and that we're not trying to create a watershed of refugees as a political strategy. Easier said than done, but I think it's possible. If an agreement can be reached there, we can set the example by granting asylum to the refugees and collaborate with other countries, mainly South Korea and Japan, to do the same. Help please. What does "so densa" mean in Japanese?
masterblaster72 replied to Brian425's topic in The Bonfire
It's a form of agreement, no precise or direct translation. Somewhat akin to us saying "correct", or "that's right", "i understand" or simply "yes". Hope that helps. Edited to add: you say "so-dess" or simply just "so", not "so-dess-ka" -- "ka" is an interrogative and they'll think you're asking a question. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -
For that reason, war with them isn't practical. But I think ensuring asylum for NK's refugees is completely doable. I disagree. I'm sure there are plenty of troops that would defect the moment they get the chance. Just my humble, civilian opinion. Again: 2100 dead after "mission accomplished" for a *very* tenuous cause results in lots of debate, and rightfully so. And it's not only liberals crying foul. Military experts like this man, for example, are pretty disgusted too. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I thought human rights is something that most colors of the political spectrum could see eye to eye on. Not to mention that our president uses terms like "liberty" and "freedom" every five words in his speeches...you'd think that we'd actually fight for what the words mean rather than reduce them to empty war mantras. Nice. But definitely do get worked up over stuff that really does matter, like "Christmas" vs. "Holiday" verbiage. Ok, you don't like LIBERALS. You make that abundantly clear. But I don't think doing something to help refugees from the most oppressive country in the world is a liberal/conservative/republicrat cause. It's a human one, and one that we should act on if we are to be morally consistent in our actions. But since you bring it up, I personally do not know one liberal that is against the war in Afghanistan. What's right is right, no matter who the commander in chief is when the war is waged. Afghanistan is right. 2100 dead after "mission accomplished" for a *very* tenuous cause results in lots of debate, and rightfully so. I also don't personally know one liberal that thinks along such binary lines like "democrat/good, republican/bad." I think that's you projecting your mode of thought. How about the North Korean refugees in China? I believe there's something we can and should do there, that's what the question is. ...never mind. The chances of that happening are zilch. People there aren't even allowed to leave their counties unless they're in with the government. There's no way for people to organize an uprising. Nor would they even have the ability or arms to do it -- one part of this film showed a hidden cam on some kids circling people dining in a public area and picking up crumbs from the ground...too much of the population is concerned with getting its next meal. Not saying that ROK likes things the way they are, but it would surprise me if ROK is facilitating a North Korean revolution. ROK is afraid of a regime collapse in NK because it would mean millions of starving neighbors knocking on their doors. It would be an instant humanitarian crisis for the region. PS your article on high altitude jumps was great reading, hope to do some myself one day. I agree with what you say, but here I beg to differ with this: Not genocide in the ethnic sense of what Turks did to Armenians or what Hutu did to Tutsi, but more like the political aspect of the definition of genocide, similar to Cambodia's killing fields. Have a look at this... Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Being out of town these days I have the chance to watch some television I otherwise wouldn't see. I saw this documentary about North Korean refugees crossing into China on PBS last night and it made an impression on me. One thing that's absolutely unacceptable in the world today is what Kim Jong Il is doing to his people. At the end of the year, by his order, the UN World Food Program will cease delivering goods to NK, which 1/3 of the population depends upon. It is the official policy of the Chinese government toward refugees that escape from NK to China to repatriate them, resulting in their certain torture/death. The UN has done very little about it, and we and our allies in the region have done little out of fear that NK will drop out of the 6-nation nuclear talks. Using the same logic as we did to invade Iraq should apply to North Korea as well, but in reality it's a whole lot more complex than that since our allies would not forgive us for destabilizing the region were we to invade. There's a genocide happening in North Korea, a systematic, ongoing one that has been happening for years, and we've done nothing. I think history will repeat itself when we feel the guilt of uncovering the death camps of North Korea once Kim Jong Il's regime finally does fall. It isn't much, but here's something that we can do. Yes indeedy -- by far the best places to find tea. Chinese grocery stores have great variety, and Oolong is a tasty and relatively inexpensive dark tea. I prefer the loose-leaf green teas from the Japanese grocery stores. A bit pricier but well worth it. My best friend is married to an Argentinian and he turned me on to Yerba Mate. I love the stuff, but try not to drink it too often b/c it wires me up. Other downside is the funny looks you get when you're sipping it out of the gourd and bombilla -- looks somewhat like a bong.
