No, not jumping. Last night, I made did my 25th platelete donation. I have a standing appointment about every 3 weeks. If you aren't familiar with the apheresis process, check out this link. It does take extra time compared to a standard blood doantion, but it is so worth it when you know the need. The demand is always higher than the supply. I'm lucky in that my platelete count is really high and my one donation can be used for as many as 3 therapeutic doses. I have family members who have received plateletes when they were recovering from cancer or after suffering burns. For me, it is a very personal way to give back to the community for what was done for my loved ones. If you used to be a donor or have never done it, I highly encourage you to contact the Red Cross or whatever your local organization might be and schedule an appointment. Whether it be whole blood or plateletes, even if you only do it once a year, your donation really can be a life saver. And as much as we get injured in this sport, it might just be for a fellow jumper. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

Not a regular CRW dog, but have done a handful of jumps. From my training, looks like they did what I was taught. Upper jumper was in lower jumpers lines= entanglement. Try to communicate. Assess available altitude to work the problem. Upper jumper should try to clear lines if possible, if not, communicate that he will chop before cutting away and hopefully fall clear of lower jumper. If lower jumper chopped, slack in lines would be a bear for upper jumper to try and clear. Looks like they did it "by the book". 50 donations so far. Give it a try. Nope. Not nearly as cool. Unless you were standing right there watching when Stony belly slammed right on his face, then you don't get it. Total commitment. Chuck Stoney's landing deserved respect. Plus a couple Advil washed down with some good hooch. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity

Reserve size/wingloading for newer jumpers
monkycndo replied to catyduck's topic in Gear and Rigging
I bought a new rig and chose to go with a larger Optimum instead of a smaller container. When the fit hits the shan, no one ever says, "Damn, wish I had a smaller reserve!!!!" Yes, the Optimum is a great reserve, but more fabric over your head is always better. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity -

What should a new jumper start with in terms of gear?
monkycndo replied to DrDom's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A well fitting helmet with padding tight to the ears will help with wind noise. I wear my helmet on the climb to altitude to protect my ears. A full face can have the visor removed to allow for the feeling of air on the face and some chin protection. Make sure you check fit before you buy. The shape of your head makes a big difference on full face helmets. I am a member of the freekishly large head club and only a few full face helmets fit. Have many more options in an open face. Regarding rigs, I am in the club of buying used as soon as you can. Gear sized to new jumpers is always in demand. You can buy used, put a bunch of jumps on it and sell it for just a little less than what you paid. Buy it for the size you want to jump know. The culture in skydiving tends to push people to downsize. If you like slow long flights, good for you. I didn't downsize until I had 350 jumps on my first canopy, which I made my first jump on at jump 36. Keep on asking questions. I found a great way to learn was once the beer light is turned on. Have two cold bottles of good brew, walk up to a mentor on the DZ, pop the bottles open and hand one over. You should have their attention for about 12 ounces. I have learned a lot with that technique, which I learned from a mentor. (Thanks Cliff). 50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity -

The saying dress for success is true for skydiving. Your weight/height isn't that far out of the norm. I am 5'8" and around 215# out the door. My BevSuit is a mid range suit with spandex arms, suplex front and large grippers(innies and outties on the legs). I have extra fabric(mini wings) in the arm pits so if I need to slow down, I can open my arms wide and get some extra drag. If I need to go fast, I fly a tight mantis and the extra drag disappears. Other options if you really fall fast are vented booties, double layer fabric on the torso, and swoop cords. Bev, Tony, EG, they all have a variety of suit ranges. Give them a call or email and see which one gives you the warm fuzzies. Between a suit with a little more drag and just more time flying your body, you will find that sweet spot of suit and skills. 50 donations so far. Give it a try. Convince a DZ to buy custom helmets with radios in a variety of sizes. Plus cost to maintain them. Doubtful. SkyDance in Davis uses the pocket on the upper arm of the suit. Easy to check/turn on for instructor, radio can be moved from suit to suit, pocket fits any standard off the shelf radio, and no snag hazard. It also puts the radio right next to the ear when student has arms raised holding toggles. Cost= low. Looks like a no brainer. 50 donations so far. Give it a try.
