Do poor people do things to keep themselves poor.
FallingOsh replied to XitXitXit's topic in Speakers Corner
I personally think trying to peg the American dream as an income is a lot of the problem. When someone says the American dream is dead, that tells me they don't understand the concept. The American dream does not mean having what your neighbors have or owning a nice house with two cars working as a janitor. The America dream is working your way up and bettering the situation for your kids. Your kids start out a little better than you and work their way up. After a generation or two the family is much better off then where they started. The American dream is the opportunity to better one's situation through relentless hard work and the desire for your kids to have it better than you. It has nothing to do with a certain job or a set income. Absolutely. or the government, or the 'rich' kids down the street, or the people who've wronged you in the past, or anyone else. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -
do you agree with Obama's Manufacturing Czar, Ron Bloom

After listening to all four parts of the sales pitch, I didn't notice that he said anything that was egregiously wrong. Are you referring to the sound byte in which Mao was quoted? Considering the quote was remarkably similar to Washington's "Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force.", I hardly see what the big deal is. People need to get over the idea that just because someone (e.g. Mao) is a Communist, they cannot offer any constructive insights. I think most of the children who were left behind would be surprised that a whole lot of our military has read things written by Mao, Engels, Marx et. al. That whole Sun Tzu thing comes to mind. Jobs Created or Saved’ Is White House Fantasy:
FallingOsh replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
So look at the improvement over a long period. Granted it's partially artificial via stimulus, but it could be worse, it could be that after the stimulus there would be no change. 3 quarters is long term? Personally, and with no data to back it up, I'm afraid next quarter might be negative again. I think Q3 was highly artificial partially due to cash for clunkers and the first time house buyer incentive. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -
The problem is that they don't just want to kill each other. They've sworn death to any infidel and the west in general. What lies led us into Afghanistan? So in short, I do know there is a good mission. I know we can accomplish it if we put enough resources to it. And I think that the political climate doesn't prevent that. *** Waiting months to make a decision, any decision, isn't preventing it? If you think it was Bush's lies that took us there then what good mission do you think there is to accomplish? -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.

Well, here ya go. A nicely summerized chart so discrediting sources is easier (or harder). -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.

No. It's not. If the will of the people is really your concern, which it isn't, then you should change the tone of your rants. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.

I was unaware the Nobel Prize committee qualified as any of those. They barely qualify as the Nobel committee right now. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.

47% of al households will pay not tax in 2009
FallingOsh replied to rhaig's topic in Speakers Corner
So you could say that because the poor don't have basis HC as would every other NORMAL industrialized nation does, they don't have the same ownership feeling as they have been disenfranchised and don't care. I like your logic, counselor. I could say that people who will receive 'free' HC won't worry about how it's paid for as much as those who are actually paying for it. Which is NOT the same as the claim in the OP. I wonder how many here received "free" public education but didn't care how it went. Do you get a better education in public schools or private schools? Compare the dropout or GED rates between public school students and private school students. How many people from public school go on to college compared to private school? Well, speaking only for myself, I got a better education than about 99.9% of private school students, and mine was ALL FREE through PhD. Not that your question is related to the topic at hand. It was your analogy. Agreed it was lame. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -

And the Jeapordy answer is : "No amount of depleted Uranium is considered safe for human consumption/ exposure." Blues, Cliff No amount of steel is considered safe for human consumption. FallingOsh replied to rhaig's topic in Speakers Corner
Yes, I understand that. I also understand that overwhelming the system is breaking it. Offering free HC will not reduce that. Requiring insurance companies to pick up more patients who will undoubtedly have more claims will not reduce costs. It will do the exact opposite. The people who weren't paying before won't be paying now so cost isn't reduced for them. The increased patients and associated costs will be passed on to people who do pay so cost doesn't decrease for them. Nothin about that reduces cost. It increases cost and shifts it to others. Like it did in Hawaii? Why isn't that done now? You think enrolling tens of millions of new people in a government run program will reduce clerical costs? They're not in the bill so it's invalid -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -

All? No. Some? Yes. Don't start the sensationalizing again. I don't understand why you think opening up free HC will reduce costs or keep hospitals from being overwhelmed. Increasing taxes on the rich, insurance companies, and businesses will not reduce costs. It certainly won't reduce the number of people going to the doctor. What, specifically, in the HC bill will reduce costs? -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -

When should Obama stop blaming Bush?
FallingOsh replied to downwardspiral's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, since he's telling the truth, I don't see the problem. What's your opinion? When can Obama take full responsibility for success and/or failure in Afghanistan? Success or failure? I think it's a little premature to start talking about the end. I also think now would be a good time to stop blaming Bush and make a Presidential decision on how to move forward. I fully understand he inherited the war, but it's not like that was a surprise. The war started before he was a senator. He wanted to be President, so be President. Make a decision and get the job done and stop worrying about reminding people he didn't start it. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -

Utter nonsense. Really? Ever seen someone drive a rental car? ... Imagine my surprise you chose to ignore everything else I said or the point I was making. If you want to get into the semantics of my comment then that's fine. No, I don't pay for rental cars. It's covered under insurance or business travel expenses. That doesn't change my point. No sense of ownership = no respect. Just like the women standing in line for free money. 'I don't know, I don't care, just give it to me.' I bet if someone showed up at their door to take their money they would suddenly care where it was going. I bet if it was their money being handed out to the masses then they would suddenly have an interest in where exactly the money was coming from or where it was going. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -
That comment caught my attention. Why? What's the thinking behind it? And it's fine by me if it's speculative.

86 yr old WWII veteran speaks about gay marriage

Well, of the WWII vets and people of their age I've spoken to, this gentleman is in the minority. Not saying he's wrong by any means. Just saying I wouldn't lump the entire generation in with one man's opinion. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. -

Utter nonsense. Really? Ever seen someone drive a rental car? It's human nature. No sense of ownership = no respect ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get it? WOMAN #1: I don’t know, his stash. I don’t know. (laughter) I don’t know where he got it from, but he givin’ it to us, to help us. ------------ ROGULSKI: Where’s the money coming from? WOMAN: I believe it’s coming from the City of Detroit or the state. ROGULSKI: Where did they get it from? WOMAN: Some funds that was forgiven [sic] by Obama. ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get the funds? WOMAN: Obama getting the funds from . . . Ummm, I have no idea, to tell you the truth. Why does it have to be a public option? Can't there be some tort reform and a few new laws regarding pre-existing conditions instead? $1T is not a small amount of government funding. Nor would a small amount ever fund a public option. Hawaii's program was concelled because so many peopled dropped their coverage for the so-called free option. Throwing money at the issue doesn't fix it. And there you go throwing in rape as a pre-exsting condition to garner a little more sympathy and call the other side insensitive. Rape is not a pre-existing condition. Some possible effects of sexual assault such as PTSD and STD's are possible reasons for denial and that should be seriously considered under tort refrom. It's been said several times so far, we don't know why this woman lost her coverage. We don't know what policy she wanted or what other options she had after she was denied. It's sensationalized for the same reasons you keep saying rape... for the same reason you left out the last sentence in the paragraph you copied and pasted. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.

Excuse me... Which language is 'the language' referring to? The United States has no official language. Perhaps YOU should learn Spanish, so that in 10 years, when it's spoken more frequently than English, you'll be able to effectively communicate your ignorance. Well then we'd have to make more people learn English because they would be the minority. Anything not to offend the minority... The cop was wrong. No question. You can live in this country without knowing English. Thinking you can live in this country, very successfully, without knowing any English is ignorant. English is without question the dominant language and (I'll go out on a limb here) Spanish will not be more common in 10 years. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.

Do you want to go tit for tat on horror stories from the medical field? I'm sure we could find plenty of articles about people suffering on waiting lists from other countries, but those are just anecdotal, right? If you want to drag out stories for people to cry over then drag them out from both sides. Of course there are flaws in the system. I'm personally in favor of serious tort reform to get medical costs under control. However, for each one of these horror stories, there is one to match from government run systems. For each one of these insurance injustices, there are are thousands who do fine with their health insurance. If you want reform then bring something realistic to the table. Anecdotal evidence from you is no different than anecdotal evidence from the other side. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.
