  1. While it can be argued that Carter was not a very good President, he has been an excellent former President, and generally an outstanding ambassador for our country. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. Hamas won the majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council in the 2005 elections. Ismail Haniyeh appears to be the legal caretaker prime minister. In March, Mahmoud Abbas said he was suspending talks with Israel. It seems Hamas is exactly who we need to be talking with. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  4. You may want to consider refining your definition a bit. Our Founding Fathers felt the need to replace the Articles of Confederation because it did not give the central government sufficient control over the states. If we use your definition, the Constitution for The United States of America was written to usher in communism. I'm reasonably certain that was not what you intended to imply. 6. Ok i thought that hot water would make the bottle break...no? The ice will remain at 32ºF/0ºC as it melts. It has to completely melt before the temperature begins to rise. Hot wash clothes would be rather unlikely to cause the bottle to break. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. Google revealed that all that statistical software is available on the Mac, but it appears there may be issues with HML on a new Mac. It is supposedly not compatible with Intel Macs, but if that is the case, it would be the first piece of software written for OS X on a PowerPC (the chip architecture Apple used prior to moving to Intel) that does not run properly under Rosetta. I also saw that they would not certify the reliability when used with Windows under virtualization programs like Parallels. At any rate, new Macs will support dual booting Windows or Mac OS X, so that Windows can run natively. Personally, I prefer OS X over Windows by a very wide margin. I find it more intuitive and user friendly, and enjoy being able to go without any anti-virus or anti-malware software. OS X also comes with XGrid, which offers the ability to fairly easily set up a distributed computing network, which allows other networked Macs to share the work involved in a single computing task in the same manner that some supercomputers work, which might be very useful for heavy use of some of the statistics software you mentioned. Note that I don't know if the software has been written to take advantage of this capability or if the software even needs to be written to take advantage of the capability. One issue with Macs is that Apple chooses not to compete in the low end market, so sometimes users have to buy more machine than the really wanted. However, with respect to price, when compared to PC's with similar hardware features, Macs seem to be competitively priced. They are not always the cheapest, but usually not the most expensive, either. (When I bought my MacBook last September, I was unable to find a hardware equivalent PC for less money by any manufacturer.) From your limited description, it sounds like a MacBook would serve your needs. However, I would recommend a trip to an Apple store (if possible) to test the video capabilities against your video needs. A MacBook Pro would have no problems at all with any but the most demanding video requirements, for which all but high end gaming PC laptops would also struggle. Personally, I think Macs are better, but at the end of the day, you have to make a decision based on your needs. Good luck!
  8. JackC posted the correct answer (assuming constant acceleration) and logic in post 37 of this thread. Without assuming constant acceleration, the correct answer would be infinitesimally less than 60 mph. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

    FLDS Raid

The more I read about FLDS, the more realistic the comparison between FLDS and the Taliban appears. Apparently others have also recognized the similarities. "I have a corner of my state that is worse than [under] the Taliban," Utah Atty. Gen. Mark Shurtleff acknowledged. The question isn't why this raid took place; the question is why didn't it occur sooner. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  10. OpenBSD is free open source software, and likely the most secure operating system publicly available today. Publish the application criteria, and the open source community will undoubtedly make huge contributions to that also if it means a transparent electronic voting system. Secure, transparent electronic voting is possible, and not at a great expense. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  11. I'm fairly certain that an active general is not expected to discuss the legality of policy he isn't involved in with Congress. His oath is to the Constitution, not the Congress. His chain of command goes through the executive branch, not the legislative branch. If Congress want to question the legality of an Iran invasion (and I certainly hope they would) they need to question the President, or someone sent on his behalf who can speak authoritatively, not a general with only a tangently related command. 15. Agreed. He listed many questions about Iraq without giving Gen. Petraeus the opportunity to answer, and then expected an answer to a question that was non-topical. No good non-retired general is going to tell the Congress that his commander in chief cannot legally do something. If that opinion needs to be expressed, it will be expressed via the chain of command, as is expected of all US military servicemen. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 16. I agree that that is how things are. But that's not how the should be. That's not what is best for voters. If electronic voting is to be implemented, it needs to be completely transparent. Proprietary software does not generally allow that, since someone is always worried about intellectual property rights. Transparency in a voting system is far more important than the intellectual property rights of the software developer. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  19. The Congress will push me to raise taxes, and I'll say no. Read my lips: No new taxes. -George H. W. Bush I did not have sexual relations with that woman. -William J. Clinton I think what we need to do is convince people who live in the lands they live in to build the nations. Maybe I'm missing something here. I mean, we're going to have kind of a nation building core from America? Absolutely not. Our military is meant to fight and win war. That's what it's meant to do. And when it gets overextended, morale drops. -George W. Bush October 11, 2000 Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  20. I'd happily give up my cell phone. I never wanted the damn thing to begin with. However, I'm quite fond of my made-in-China laptop. 23. And WOW! Typical users are playing WOW -- damn near 10M subscribers now. No doubt about it, WOW is a popular game, but 10 million users is few compared to the number of people with computers at home. Nearly any new consumer level machine has adequate power to play it; the requirements are fairly low. (If gaming is a priority, Windows is definitely the OS to use.) Math tutoring available. 24. If you look back, I acknowledged that the examples I had seen with my own eyes were anecdotal. The "benchmark" that was offered as a counter-example lacks too much information to be anything more than anecdotal. Even if it didn't, a *nix OS still used the least power of the four tested. I am, however, now more inclined to suspect that it is a combination of a more efficient OS with hardware technology that more easily takes advantage of that efficiency that can offer the most energy savings via OS selection. I would also say that energy settings within any OS are more important than OS selection in terms of energy savings. My post that is being nitpicked was simply a list of a few different things that individuals can do to save a little bit of power here and there. It was in no way intended to promote one OS over another (they all have their relative strengths and weaknesses), except to the extent that if one watches tech forums, there is an abundance of posters who are not pleased with the amount of system resources their new Windows machines use. Many of those users subsequently switch to a *nix OS, and the resource usage by the OS drops. Since my own observations are consistent with that, combined with the fact that I rarely (if ever) read about anyone switching from a *nix OS to Windows only to have more system resources available, I added the OS switch to the list. I was not trying to convince everybody to switch from Windows. For a typical user that uses their home computer for internet, email, and maybe some word processing and spreadsheet usage, there's no real functional benefit of one OS over another, with the possible exception of iPod/iTunes syncing abilities, since iPods tend to be rather popular.
