  1. The odds are irrelevant. If the odds had not been overcome, we would not be here to ask the questions. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  3. Just as they moved their currency from a fixed peg against the dollar to a floating peg, they could remove any dependancy. That's probably because it is their industrial revolution. Is that pollution good? No. I agree it's a form of deficit spending, but the US is still a major polluter as well. We should add that pollution to our deficit spending, also. It serves no useful purpose to deny the importance of other nations of the world just because we don't agree with their ideology. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  4. If you don't believe that the EU or China are superpowers, economic or otherwise, then it is you who has lost touch with reality. Does the US have a head start? Absolutely. But China and the EU are very much in the race with us. It's not like the US is not suffering from our own financial crises. Additionally, much of the progress in the US has come at the expense of unsustainable deficit spending. Let's not forget that the EU has two permanent seats on the UNSC compared to the single seat of the United States. Their GDP is over 25% larger than the GDP of the US. They are also the largest exporter in the world. China has excellent growth rates, large population, and favorable price parity in their favor. Add to that the fact they they produce a lot of the goods we consider essential (do you like having affordable computers and cell phones?), and hold a large amount of US currency with which they could flood the market and cause additional financial problems for the US. The US is by no means the world's only superpower. We have the highest military spending, but that does not make a superpower. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. If you think that's true, then you're not paying attention. I don't like them much either, but that's not the topic of the thread. I would be interested in seeing that conjecture supported. How has the electoral system kept our form of democracy going, aside from the fact that it allows a greater potential of the loser of the popular election to take office? (That worked out especially well in 2000, BTW.) Nope, I don't want to see a two party anything. I want candidates in office because the people like what they stand for, not because of their allegiance to a particular party. If political parties are inevitable, then we need at least three major parties to avoid any one party having control of the legislative branch or the judicial branch of government. 6. No realistic mechanism exists. There's the option of a write-in, but that option is essentially throwing a vote away. Voting for a third party candidate is another wasted vote in terms of a third party candidate actually having a chance to win. If there were a landslide victory anticipated (at the state level, in many states), then voting for a third party candidate could increase the chances of future candidates from that party of having a legitimate chance of winning. The way the current system is set up, we have to choose between a Republican or a Democrat, the two entrenched parties. The primaries work to promote the candidate from each party that has the best chance of winning, not the candidate that is most qualified for the job. Unfortunately, those likely to win are rarely the most qualified. Different skill sets are required. Neither party is interested in changing the system to something more fair, such as ranked voting, because such a system would make it easier to un-entrench either party. So, in the end, the people lose, and often vote against the candidate they least want in office. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. This is exactly why he had no chance Too many good ideas? No, that's not the reason. His claim to have seen a UFO is what ruined his chances. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  8. Kucinich is an Ohio Representative in the US Congress who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for President in 2008. As a Congressman, he tried to have Vice President Dick Cheney impeached. As a presidential candidate, among other things, he supports ending the War On Drugs and establishing universal health care. 9. Would that one be China, EU or USA? Just because the US barks the loudest doesn't make them the only big dog. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  11. Then why bother with the primaries at all? By ignoring voters, the democratic process is defeated. One cannot claim that the two entrenched parties can "pick" their candidate as they prefer, without respect to the democratic process, and simultaneously claim to support a democratic process to select the President. It's like Obama claiming that he has consistently supported seating Florida's delegates while simultaneously claiming that the rules are the rules, and that it would be unfair to allow the voters of those two states to have a voice in the process. Clearly, one of his claims is a lie, but no one wants to believe that Obama is another example of the same old thing, politics as usual, say whatever it takes; he's just more charismatic in his attempts to dupe the public. 12. Try READING the article.....the truth will set you free I did, but apparently you only took one quote out of context. Besides, Carter is more credible than the NYT. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  13. I would have to vote no. The veterans from OIF/OEF are no more or less deserving of care than any other veterans. I wouldn't support any taxes that only offered relief to that subset of veterans. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  14. Yes it is, and it is unjust and supported by Obama, despite his claims to have consistently supported the seating of Florida and Michigan's delegates at the DNC. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  15. True. The Arabs had an offer for peace talks on the table for five years, yet Israel didn't want to sit down. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  16. Bullshit.. they were getting close when the Palestinians started the Intefada... remember??? With some degree of reluctance and some uncertainty about the reception my book would receive, I used maps, text and documents to describe the situation accurately and to analyze the only possible path to peace: Israelis and Palestinians living side by side within their own internationally recognized boundaries. These options are consistent with key U.N. resolutions supported by the U.S. and Israel, official American policy since 1967, agreements consummated by Israeli leaders and their governments in 1978 and 1993 (for which they earned Nobel Peace Prizes), the Arab League's offer to recognize Israel in 2002 and the International Quartet's "Roadmap for Peace," which has been accepted by the PLO and largely rejected by Israel. 17. I suppose you feel that it would be justifiable for the United States to be attacked for voting in Bush? Too bad Hamas' willingness to work towards peace is inconsistent with your opinion. As long as the White House and Israel don't stand in the way of peace, it does have potential benefits. Remember, it's Israel that won't step up to the table to negotiate peace. Yeah. How unreasonable to suggest that the internationally recognized borders be recognized by Israel. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  18. Couldn't find any posts to back up your claims, I guess? Yet, when they show a willingness to make peace, it is Israel and the US who stand in the way because Carter held talks with Hamas, who are in power legitimately and democratically. 19. Why bother having a Presidential election at all then? Why not just appoint the president? It would certainly be more efficient, and only very slightly less fair than what you are proposing. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  20. 'Tis a bit like the pot calling the kettle black; don't you think? I challenge to find any post in which I've claimed or implied the Palestinian - Israeli violence is one sided. It's certainly not balanced, but it's not one sided. You seem to be the one who keeps claiming that the Palestinians are completely wrong and the Israelis are completely justified in their actions. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  21. And in the context of Israel's treatment of civilian Palestinians on occupied territory, those actions are war crimes. It's good to know that you support them. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  22. Couldn't find any yourself? It sure is easy to find examples of violence against the Palestinians. Do you mean the homicide bombers that operate from the comfort of their aircraft or the apparently more courageous ones that are willing to strap on a suicide vest? Either way, the Geneva Conventions deal primarily with non-combatants and POWs, as well as civilians in areas under control of an occupying power. Well, I'm childless, so my civilian population is limited to me. I don't have a weapons launch site, and my military headquarters is generally shielded only with a hat, if that. Apparently not, according to the rest of the world. Nope, I try to make sure my idea of fair play is objectively universal. That's why I find it hypocritical that one can criticize Palestinians while simultaneously supporting the actions of Israelis. You don't know me very well. I have a lot of respect for Jews and Judaism, at least relative to other deist religions. However, I view many of the military actions of Israel to be nothing more than acts of terrorism, just committed by one of our allies, so we don't call it that (much like when we were supporting jihadists in the Afghan-Soviet war, those jihadists were freedom fighters, but now that they're not on our side anymore, they're terrorists). 23. The Fourth Geneva Convention comes to mind. You realize that you're advocating war crimes, right? Sun Tzu said the same thing long before he did. It is something all good generals understand. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  25. "Our position consistently has been that the Michigan and Florida delegations should be seated [at the Democratic National Convention] and that we should come up with a system that is fair to all the parties involved," Obama says. (emphasis mine -jcd11235) Perhaps it shouldn't. But it sure highlights how his position has not been consistent like he claims it has. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour!
