Since safe is relative, it will as always depend on who you ask. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

So only 1 person on the load was creative enough to avoid the clouds by using the old lightning line. I thought more people knew about that one, it's the oldest night jump excuse in the book. That sounds like a good idea, and could work for alot of us mortals. What about those unlucky guys who nobody can keep up with?? They would have to be filmed from a plane flying next to them. For the 182, between 500 and 1500 ft per minute, depending on the prop and engine configuration. Average/mean is 1,000 ft per minute most times. Alot of this depends on the pilot's skill/experience as well. edit: and of course also varies with air conditions (temp and pressure). I thought the S5 Blade was supposed to be next in the series, but I'm not really up on all the latest...perhaps the S6 project showed more promise and was chosen instead of the Blade. Patience Yuri, maybe he's got something in the works for next year. I know that's what I'm waiting on. Good things come to those who wait. I'm sure it takes time to produce quality. BOD meeting notes by Mike Turoff for the Feb. 06 meeting

I agree, looks like vigorous huffing and puffing of hot air so far... "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957 -
That's hilarious. Now to justify this post with speculation related to the topic: I think it's just more fun and dramatic to do the "dive then plane out" technique purely for the flat glide feeling. But the potential energy at the start is the same, and if they open in the same area then overall there is no increase in efficiency of transfering potential energy to horizontal kinetic. It's merely track swooping. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Exactly what I was thinking... this could be interesting. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Well, of course it's possible; I mean, looking on the bright side, even with a total mal you still have a backup. Hopefully they're at least close to the same size bags. Recommend you get your local rigger to look at it and help you out. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

So my description didn't match your specific and particular experience perfectly to a t (everybody's different). Naturally how much brakes you apply will depend on your WL and other factors, and I'm not gonna argue over semantics cause I don't want to feel like I'm running in the Special Olympics, as they say. Getting back to the point I was trying to make, I feel a suit flying in brakes next to a canopy doesnt give a good approximation of it's maximum glide capabilities. I never said all pilots will have the same speed, only that a canopy will not keep up with a WS in full flight, therefore the WS puts the brakes on. If you disagree then please show me a canopy docking on a V1 in full flight and my hat will be sincerely off to you and I will stand corrected. It's clear in the Canadian WS-canopy dock the WS had the brakes on. It's really not rocket science. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. horizontal speed of WS in best-glide flight is in the triple digits, and I'm gonna go out on a weak limb and say that's much more than the canopy's forward speed. Perhaps I'm underestimating the forward speed of this 40 sqft canopy? "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Typically known glide ratios for canopies are in full-flight, not in the many other flight modes available that are likely to be employed when docking. and even so, when docking on a canopy the WS is in deep brakes anyway, so that's not a good measure. Haha.... 20%: walking, talking, red-blooded hetero guy. Just way too straight for these modern times mate! apparently not gay enough... "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Maybe this doesn't really count, but Robi told me once that a Phantom is a baby Vampire, so I'm hanging on to that. This one apparently hasn't grown wings yet. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

I think if you rub the blades quickly they get excited. The pilot will like it if you don't push off the skid, too. edit: and don't forget to buckle that seatbelt behind you. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Just a shot in the dark here...test jumper could wear an approved harness under the test harness with an approved chest mount reserve? "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Yea, same thing here. Until recently I was jumping a Dolphin with totally open corners, never had a problem (but that also was a statistically small sample;not 1 or 2 thousand jumps). edit: when I got my new rig I wondered why the corners were only partly open and perhaps this is the reason why. You are correct. I checked the Phoenix site and there is a PFI in NY and also one in Chicago. Looks like those are the nearest wingsuit instructors to you (assuming you are right that there are no BMIs in your neighborhood). Good luck. www.phoenix-fly.com "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

I fully agree with you there, each jumper should be responsible for their own gear. It is very unfortunate that the staff are forced to babysit licensed jumpers. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Sorry to confuse you... I wasn't speaking of regular corners as frivolous fashion, but rather dynamic/open corners as such. I'm a fan of them because like Mr. Campos, I use them for my wing flying. edit: the confusion probably came in due to the satirical and rhetorical nature the post was written in. Speaking of that, we should really be ashamed of ourselves, Scott, for following such a frivolous old piece of silly "fashion" sorry, couldn't resist that one... "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957

The drawback is it takes an extra 5 seconds or so to pack, and since most people don't do WS they don't need this extra step. Other rigs that have open corners besides WS rigs are BASE rigs. You cannot tell the difference from the outside, you have to see the opened main tray to see it. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. Don't forget one of the most important parts: post pictures. "The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it. " -John Galt from Atlas Shrugged, 1957
