Skydiving: Sport or hobby?
skyjumpenfool replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Try participating on a NSL 4 way team, or 2 or 4 way CReW team… then give us a call! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
I recently received this as a PM>>> -------------------- "How 'bout posting the video? And did they get any points built? The jumper separation during opening was probably just as scary." --------------------- The video shows very little of the stall except for the horizon disappearing from the scene just before we were ejected. Otherwise, I would have already posted. We were able to finish a really nice formation and watch a nice 4way (the last 4 out) falling beside us in the distance. However, this brings up a really nice point!! What do we do with "unexpected" separations??? My reason for reporting this incident was for education! Thanks for all the great posts and suggestions. It has become very clear that PAC's have issues with stalls. That does NOT make them bad aircraft, but, we need to be ever vigilant about these issues so they can continue to fly us to altitude SAFELY. Not sure of the aircraft... what I'd like to know is, who is the idiot running in front of the spinning prop?? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

Yuck! Yuck! I hear getting caught in a Storm is also dangerous. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
QUOTE "Four years ago we had some issues with silly string and beach balls," said Lukas. Well, that would explane the overreaction. God knows we can't have any of that "silly string" and "beach ball" behaivior! Damn kids! Ah yes... whatever happened to the good ol days. It would be good to point out also that on this load, one of the floaters is a very big guy. And, the video pointed out that he and the front floater were very high on the step. They were probly creating quite a burble for the horizontal stabilizer. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

Agreed! But let me clarify a few points... 1) One of the jumpers, the one nearest the front of the aircraft, is also a commercial pilot. He would have much to share here. And those who know him respect his opinions. I don't know if the pilot is also a jumper?? 2) All on the load were to exit together. 12-way RW plus 1 camera man (myself). So, all were crowding the door. 3) I don't know the exact airspeeds. But, it was very apparent that, on a later dive, the pilot made a correction and the airspeed was noticably higher. There were 12 other folks on this load who have a version of this story that I would like to see shared. Also, I'm hoping the pilot is willing to talk. When the aircraft stalled, I (rear float w/camera) was very nervous about the tail. It didn't seem to play into this scenario. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

There are several factors that make these points moot. My point in posting this was to have a well needed discussion. My reason for pointing out that there were experienced jumpers is that they will have valuable insight to share. And, hopefully, they will share. Let's not look for fault here. Rather, let's share info and discuss how to avoid this situation in the future. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

Saturday June 13th, 2009 – Waseca, MN PAC 750XL flying 13 skydivers (12 way w/camera) stalled on jump run w/several jumpers hanging outside the aircraft at 13K. The jumpers outside the plane were pealed from the plane and all the jumpers inside were able to get out. The pilot did a nice job of recovering from the stall. No one was injured and to my knowledge no damage was done to the aircraft. However, with the growing popularity of the PAC’s in this sport, I think this incident needs to be discussed. The pilot and DZ management took the incident very seriously. Much was discussed and pictures were taken of the jumps exit order etc. The video shows very little of the stall, except for the horizon disappearing from the frame. There were very experienced jumpers on the load along with a commercial pilot/jumper. So, IMHO, there’s much to be learned from this incident. On a subsequent 13 way, jump run speed was noticeably increased. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

In case you’re planning on trying this, I can tell you from experience, it is relatively easy. Once a round is open, it’s fairly stable and messing it up would be tough. The hard part is getting two rounds at the same altitude within close proximity. However, I can also tell you if you break off low, there's this thing called "oscillation"............... Nothing calm about it!! It's the sheer terror that spins our minds into slow motion mode. It's like time slows down and we are able to focus on the problem at hand. It's hard to explain, but it's like every sense becomes more acute. What's weird is you won't recognize what I'm talking about until after the event is over. Looking back and reflecting, you’ll understand. And........... I hope none of you reading this will ever experience it. Be Safe! I took time off when my kids were young. I would go out to the DZ from time to time just to say hello to friends. When I got back into the sport, it was very helpful to have a couple friends willing to bring me along. Talk to your local DZO. Bring an old friend along if you do not know the DZO. As for the jump log, that's a bummer. But, it doesn't mean you can't jump. When you go to get your next license, you'll have to find another way to prove proficiency. You may even need to redo some jumps. At any rate, take advantage of any opportunity to retrain. Don't look at it as an unnecessary hoop to jump through... think of it as an opportunity to learn more about this sport. And remember above all else, HAVE FUN! Welcome back! I totally agree! There always hitting on me in the bars. They say things like, "excuse me sir, are you sitting on that stool?" Or, "Excuse me old man, can I get by you?" You know, suggestive things like that. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

Darn! Based on the subject, and the OP, I was sure this thread was going a completely different direction??? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

So, you were cruising the Craigslist personals???? There's the problem right there!!! You just need to get out a little more. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

There's really another aspect of this to consider. Years ago, when most canopies were CReW friendly, just about everyone did CReW. Nowadays, you need to travel to a dz that has a few CReW dogs if you’re interested in learning the discipline. The Storm could change all that. After making several jumps on the Storm and being an older CReW Pup, I enjoyed the softer openings, flight characteristics and particularly the soft landings. Plus, the Storm could be used as an "everyday" canopy! No need for a second or third rig just to do CReW..... I for one can't wait for the transition. I'd be very happy jumping a Storm as my everyday canopy. It could very well bring in the young bodies needed to keep CReW alive and vibrant. At the last 4 way competition, one of the team members brought along a second rig in hopes that I could then video a second team. I agreed, but was a little nervous about jumping borrowed gear. Not about jumping a hotter canopy (that was great, thanks Sandy) , but about how I would replace it if I messed it up. All went well, but still, it added one more dimension to the jumps. Just something else to think about?? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

First things first!! When you borrow anything to anyone, state (clearly and firmly) the terms. i.e. "You’re welcome to borrow it. However, if you break it you own it!" If you can't afford to replace it, you probably shouldn't be borrowing it. It’s worth about $750.00 so be careful. Then when something does happen, you’re covered. If you want this to stand up in court, get it in writing. That being said, by all means if you break something you should "buck-up" and take responsibility for it.
