It's a sign of the politically-correct times. We'd rather be killed than to be called racist. Same thing happens with terrorism legislation. We can't profile muslim terrorists because we'd be called racist, and we have to strip search grandma's to appear to be fair. "Muslim" isn't a race. Your right. It's a state of mind. Depending on who guided you to that state of mind it is much more dangerous. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. I don't buy that. Are you honestly saying that the decline of the family unit and the effect that it is having on our kids, mainly their lack of discipline, inability to finish school, and teen pregnancy rate isn't a problem? What about 80% of the prison population coming from broken homes? Not a worthy goal? are you serious? "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. Let me start by saying I get what you are saying. But what I don't get is when given a choice between a party of "try and occasionally fail" and "don't even bother trying" they vote for the "don't even bother to try" group. I point to the schools as an example. Do you really think less discipline and family values will fix the kids not graduating form school? Not all the "party of family values" politicians are closet gays or having affairs, despite what Amazon says. A good home, loving parents, and happy well disciplined kids are a good start to solving a lot of problems. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. Does Cameron Get It? Or Will You Call Him a Bigot?
jgoose71 replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
I agree that Englishmen, along with Americans, come in all colors and creeds. I think the questions kind of asinine though. Do we really need to point out that the things that need to be left behind are the preaching of hate, intolerance, and violence towards others? Sharia law has some very extreme, one-sided laws that need to be left behind. Is anyone going to argue that the appropriate penalty for converting to Christianity should be beheading? People generally leave their old countries to find a better life. Why then do they also bring the traditions that created the life they are trying to escape? (I.E. honor killings. Is that really OK?) If you have ever watched law and order you would know that the writers and actors are left wing..... And if the school officials were right wing then: a) there wouldn't be teachers unions full of lawyers righting these crappy laws and b) the real issues in schools that are causing the problems would be addressed, which is lack of discipline. Why do you think that 1 teacher was able to teach kids how to read, write and do arithmetic using only a chalk board 60 years ago? The kids were paying attention. If the teacher didn't beat that ass, there would be a mother and a father at home with a belt that would. Bring back the paddle!!!! "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. Does Anyone Realy Respect the Ninth Circus Court?
jgoose71 replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
Even if they are the largest, that the Supreme court shows this much of a difference between the ninth circuit and the next highest, the second circuit to me indicates a problem. Maybe breaking them up along with firing a few judges would be a good start. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. Agreed. Zero tolerance is an excuse to not to have to make a decision. If you got people on one side saying "he's a criminal" and people on the other side saying "he's just a kid," it gives the bureaucrat a chance to say "it's out of my hands." Never mind the kid or what really happened, or if he is a good kid or not or any facts in the matter. As long as the Bureaucrat has his ass covered. Thank a lawyer for that. Why does it have to be "End of Days?" The Incas and the Mayans said Dec 21, 2012 wasn't the end of the world, rather the beginning of a new era. I tend to agree. With technology and communications shrinking the world, forcing new beliefs and old to come together and face each other, ya, we got conflict, but things will come to a head and work its self out. -In the series "Jericho", the nuclear bombs don't wipe out everything. -Nostradamus predicted a 1,000 years of peace after everything came to a head. Are we at a critical point in our history? I think so. Is it the end of the world? Probably not. Put yer tin foil hats and bubble wrap suits away for now, Haley's Comet didn't stop to pick us up this time. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. Does Anyone Realy Respect the Ninth Circus Court?
jgoose71 replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
I ain't gonna lie, the 9th Circuit Court of appeals has destroyed my home town so I am biased, but, you do have a very valid point. A better way to judge them, I think, is how many cases do they hear from the 9th Circuit? If they over turn about 70% of the cases across the board, what is the ratio of cases heard from the 9th Circuit compared to the rest of the country? Do they feel they need to look at the 9th more than any other appellate court? "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. Another Court Rules Obama Care Unconstitutional
jgoose71 replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
So opening up your choices by allowing you to purchase different health care policies across state lines might be a good idea? I wish there was a political party out there pushing for something like that. I guess the republicans had noooooooooo good ideas...... But Mandating that you buy Volt technical because that is what your company uses, that will fix everything. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. Another Court Rules Obama Care Unconstitutional

So does anybody know how many people have been exempted from Obama care to date? I'm thinking of this as just a waiver for the country. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. S Dakota: Law to Mandate Buying Guns Proposed
jgoose71 replied to Kennedy's topic in Speakers Corner
Nope, not at all. I think is a good example of you missing the point. I agree wholeheartedly with the guy who proposed the bill, and hope it never becomes law. See the post above yours that quotes the rest of the article. I read the bill, and passing it would be as bad as ObamaCare. The difference is I'm consistently against this (and in good company with a number of courts). You seem to be a bit hypocritical in picking and chosing what the government should tell people what to buy. I whole wholeheartedly agree with you. But if Obama-care passes, should take this law a step further? If you choose not to buy a gun, you should be fined. If you can't afford to buy a gun, the government should increase taxes on the rich to purchase a gun for you. And if you can't afford ammo, you should be given xxx rounds of your choice for your weapon. Your going to need them for your mandated shooting classes. After all, it's for your personal safety right? It's the governments job to keep us safe. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. I don't think it is nearly that easy. Mental Health practitioners are not able to predict with any degree of accuracy which of their clients might become violent. About the only reliable predictor is when somebody has become violent in the past. That is probably an accurate predictor for people without mental illness as well. Then you would have to even identify disqualifying conditions. Do you want to prohibit gun ownership for anybody who has ever been treated for depression? Anxiety disorder? Adjustment disorder NOS? Pretty much anybody who has ever had counseling has been assigned one of those diagnosis. Would you limit it to the Big 3 (Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia)? On what basis? It would make a very good start if the state kept a reliable database of people with disqualifying conditions, and ALL purchases required the same background check as purchases from a licensed dealer - ALL purchases, no exceptions. Have to agree with Southern Man. Please further define "Disqualifying Condition." The Human psyche isn't that simple. And then to follow on with what Mike said, we have now started to place limits and conditions on gun rights, what's to stop the government from placing limits and conditions on other rights? You have to be screened to carry a gun, next, will you have to be screened before you can start talking in the main stream media? Wait, this could work out....... I agree. A friend of mine is a veteran and has done tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He suffers from night terrors every now and then. Anyone who knows him though knows he is a great guy and would never commit any violent acts. Janet Napolitano would consider him a greater threat to the US than a Muslim extremists though What protections would he get when everyone is required to produce a card that says "screened and suitable to own a gun"? +1 You got to hyperlink to the the actual first few minutes of the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSROlfR7WTo&playnext=1&list=PLD7AE5D4B0EB3FED0 Yes, this is the direction we are going. There has been clear cut cases of the media doctoring shit, but I don't know if this is it without seeing the whole thing. They may have edited it for clarity. He may have meant Robert Gates and said Bill on accident. Without the whole interview it's hard to say. Is Bill Gates and Microsoft working on a project with an F-35 in it by chance? Still some un-answered questions. I think the media can clarify things, but hey shouldn't be making shit up or change the meaning through selective editing as seen with MSNBC here- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoikNVzesGc There is editing for time and clarification, and editing to downright lie and deceive. Oh, was that it? So it wasn't anything to do with the 'with us or against us' rhetoric, the labelling of any opponents as un-american, anti-american, communist or muslim. No, it was the spelling and grammar slams. It's all a part of it. Any lawyer will tell you, if you can't punch a hole in the argument, punch a hole in his credibility. Here in Speakers Corner, that's done by pointing out spelling and grammar errors. In the real world, it goes like this against republicans: http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/bushquotes/a/dumbbushquotes.htm And the same web site when using the same search parameters will have these as examples for democrats: http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/barackobama/a/obama-quotes_2.htm Strange how none of his foot-in-mouth moments are caught. Like I said, when the facts don't go your way, start attacking the person. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." Life, the Universe, and Everything

And here it is. The "I really don't have a come back so I'll call this guy a blithering idiot" response. No one is saying that an education, spelling and grammar are not important. Sometimes though, when important issues are being discussed, the ADHD members of the group allow the less important things overshadow the more important things. Nietzsche. So you are saying "Potatoe" may be correct? "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." Life, the Universe, and Everything

Well, actually yes it is. This is the key point you keep dancing around. It is what is really needed if you want to stop the shootings. Just because you give free mental health care to everyone, doesn't mean they will use it. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Way to justify your left wing arguing tactic. It all goes back to Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals." "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon." When there is no good argument, attack the person. If you are able to reduce the man, you diminish the message. You see this all the time in the media. Barrack Obama mispronounces "Corpsman" and he is only human and anyone can make a mistake. Anyone on the right does it, they are a blithering idiot. The left just can't stay on the subject at hand. Anything to distract from the actual issue. And they wonder why the mood has gotten so toxic. Oh yea, I almost forgot, Alinsky's last rule- "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." "One acts decisively only in the conviction that all the angels are on one side and all the devils on the other." "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." Life, the Universe, and Everything

And here is the conundrum that brings me back to the point I made several post ago. Unless you mandate mental health screening for everyone, it ain't gonna happen. It's why I say right now, it's about as good as it's gonna get. The "Gun Genie" is out of the bottle, Pandora's box has been opened, no going back now. A gun ban is not the answer. You will only disarm law abiding people. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." Life, the Universe, and Everything

Oh I hear you. Tell you what. I can agree that if we provided free mental health care to everyone in the US that it may lessen the crime rate IF you can agree that law abiding and responsible gun owners having a fire arm on them when a crime occurs can lessen the impact of a violent crime. I think that is something reasonable people can agree on, don't you? "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." Life, the Universe, and Everything

Yes, if they volunteer to go or are mandated to go. Even though you can look them up in the yellow pages and they are free, we still have drunk drivers. Face it, any example you provide, there will be people that slip through the cracks. That is my point. Unless you mandate everyone get regular mental health tests, some one will slip through. Actually the health costs associated with mandatory mental health screening of every man woman and child in America would cost more. Not to mention the treading on of individual rights. Yes as a mass group we are predictable. You can predict a lot of things and come up with a lot of accurate statistics when you are dealing with groups. And as a whole, we are capable of better. But that is not what I am talking about here. I'm talking about an individual. There are billions of individuals and each one has his own story and his own path following his own free will. You can predict a group. What we are talking about now for these unspeakable acts of evil is picking the individual out of the group. Out of a thousand people, there will be one bad apple. Now pick him. You can only do that if you subject the whole group to mandatory psychological counseling. You really can't do that in a country the size of America. Damn free will. It will get you every time. Once he has committed a crime though and pops up on the radar, that is a different story. He has to commit a crime first though.
