  1. But maybe "halfway rational". Only halfway irrational! Not bad for a GOP Governor, or Senator. (Mostly I just shut up about this stuff, but sometimes I sit here in the freezing north and take potshots) Good Luck with your election. The people are always right, even when they are left. 2. That's why is called 1dx MKII and not 2DX. Only full time pros will bother upgrading, and not all of them. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  3. That is very cogent explanation. It's not the first time I've heard the theory of fear. Some believe that love and fear are the only two emotions, all the others are just variations. Other believe in just one, fear, and consider love to be just a temporary absence of fear. I feel that many people are just willing to be led by their noses along the path of least resistance due to plain mental laziness. I really believe that America is so rich, and so safe, that people are just bored. Life needs challenges and excitement. If we don't get enough stimulation we look for it. Demagogues riling the population up provide some of the missing emotion. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  4. Not sure how you can think a performance is out of place at an event like the Superbowl. If they didn't want a performance, why would they bring in a superstar pop performer.? Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  5. They do. Sun Path for example uses two different sizes; standard length (110in) and extended length (129in) Sunpath's manual is excellent, even better than UPT's. But although I can find in it recommendations (not specs) for p/c sizes by canopy I can see no guidance on bridle length. Can you tell me where you see a spec? Edit to add---- I see now on their parts for sale page the option between these two lengths. I don't see how this constitutes a specification though. 6. That's right. Manufacturer approval is not required for a rigger to change the length of the main bridle as long as the change does not interfere with normal function of the TSO'd parts of the parachute system. Mark "If the bridle is too short, the pilot chute cannot launch properly. If too long, the snatch force is increased." Rigger Handbook p.2-12* It would seem that altering the length of the bridle absolutely will intere with the normal function of the TSO'd parts of the system. "The rigger cannot change the configuration of the bridle without approval of the manufacturer." Same paragraph, Rigger Handbook p.2-12* *correction, p.2-15 If that is so, then manufacturers need to publish a spec for bridle length. They do not. Bridles and p/c s are high wear items that are frequently replaced. Seldom by OEM parts. This argument is basically useless, but a perennial favourite in this forum. 7. This sort of judgement by outsiders is what the part of what the "Right to Privacy" is all about. It actually borders on misogyny. 1 Debauchery is not illegal, or even wrong. 2 It takes two to debauch. You are entitled to have an opinion about anyone's morals I suppose. But that opinion has no bearing on their rights. Depending just exactly what you mean by "late term" I doubt if any woman in her right mind would use it for birth control. And if she is not in her right mind you or anyone else is not allowed to punish her for her moral shortcomings. Look after your own morals. I know I could improve, you probably could too. 8. That would be because it's one of the Nanny States. It's not legal to jump in GB unless you do it at a facility that has BPA blessing. And to have that you must adhere to BPA rules. He can build all the parachutes he wants, but no one can jump them there. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  9. What we do have influence over, collectively as a civilization, is the increase in atmospheric gasses that trap heat. You may be willing to throw up your hands in surrender and say it is beyond our control, but increasingly much of the world isn't. 10. Kinda the other way around :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paJqHPHLExo Yup, at 12 FPS with full tracking autofocus the 1DX-II is clearly the new standard for sports photography. The full time pros will already have them on pre-order. But no, I don't want all that weight strapped to my head either. I don't really see a lot of reason to choose full frame over APS-C sensors for skydiving shots. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  11. At some time in the future, as sea levels threaten major coastal cities, there will be pressure to attempt controlling the amount of sunlight reaching the surface. Probably though high altitude particles from aircraft. I will be long gone by then, but it appears likely. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. 12. I was buying Tempos from Bartek. (skydiverek) He used to sell them a little cheaper than he does now. Also when I was buying them CAD was at par with USD. That made them worth it. Not so much now. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  13. Holy over exaggeration Batman. It was his own ass he handled. Are you kidding? Billvon 1 Turtlespeed 0 on that one. Maybe we need a poll. (Although your "Gotcha" was a nice try.) Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  14. If you really want to know what NOAA thinks about the weather extremes the world experienced in 2014 the 180 page summary is here: http://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/~atw/yr/2015/BAMS_EEE_2014_Full_Report_hi_res.pdf Your extremely simplified version of NOAAs report on it is incorrect and probably comes from skimming wattsupwiththat.com. It's not what NOAA said. 2014 was a very warm year overall. In the big picture the seas are rising in a measurable manner and the glaciers are receding. Keep your eye on the ball and stop looking for small details pointing in different directions and suddenly things will be a little clearer. 15. I'm not sure why you are asking about Manitoba. Rob is not from there. But I am. I've bought several 20 plus year old reserves from Poland. And I'm happy about them. But they were not made in Poland. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  16. Right on. I was highly amused by the obvious contempt he showed for the Committee of Congress. The irony is that many Americans also have a high level of contempt for the current Congress. Yet Shkreli is one of a very few people that are currently held in even more contempt. Putin gets more respect than he does. Maybe even Hillary and The President. 17. "Alarmist" is just a mocking term used to denigrate people who don't agree with you. No one will ever consider your argument if you begin it with an insult. No one is really alarming, science is looking and speaking calmly and rationally. A more accurate term would be "concernist". Record temps and unusual weather do prove little or nothing on their own. The strong indicators of change are the slow but steady rise in sea level, the retreat of glaciers, and the related easily tracked and measured increase in atmospheric CO2. Coupled with models that predict warming. The Earth does go through cycles of all these things, and there is no chance that mankind is going to cause true record amounts of any of them. What is different is the speed at which the change is occurring. And the cause of the change. We are not going to damage Earth beyond recognition, but we may very well degrade it's ability to support our civilization. It's not alarmist to recognize that fact. No one is running around in circles waving and screaming that the end is near. Instead rational people are calling for the world to work together and try to lower the rate at which we are changing the atmosphere. I would say that anyone claiming there is some sort of conspiracy of scientists somehow working against the interests of western countries in general, and the USA in particular is being the real "alarmist". 18. Humans are social animals that live in groups, form tribes and societies. This comes with rules, taboos, and responsibilities. There will always be a tension between individualism and collectivism. No man is an island. You can not enjoy the things you love without the tribe to support you. There is no right answer to this tension. Individuals drive us forward and are our innovators. But they must always build on what came before them. But be careful what you wish for. 19. You bring up a darn good point. I don't understand why some people want to argue whether the increase in green house gases is warming the Earth. The real argument and discussion should be around how much we should change our behavior to deal with it versus learning to cope with it. Clearly warming is here and is not going to reverse by itself, or even with substantial efforts. There are going to be winners and losers as sea levels rise, and agricultural production shifts. We need to be planning how to deal with it. We are a very adaptable species, but there are a lot of unknowns. I hope you enjoy your book. Is it a dead tree edition of a .pdf file? 20. I know Paul. (I'm not really sorry) Too bad George never made a Micro Raven 99 for us to recommend! The general level of sarcasm in the whole thread is pretty high. As it should be. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  21. Yes, this. And to expand on it, I don't think minds are made up or changed all at once. Occasionally an argument will get someone to pay enough attention to look deeper into an issue. Change starts for me when I begin to see that a viewpoint or opinion other than the one I already have formed may be of value in some cases. None of us have the time or inclination to be continually challenging ourselves on too many issues at one time. If we did we would constantly vacillate and never make up our minds. Add to that the fact that all too often what passes for debate is merely posturing and puffery. Most of us recognize that and ignore it as the waste of time it is. After that comes the fact that what is being argued is often of no real importance. Or the person making the argument has already made themselves irrelevant to us by proving themselves not to present thoughtful reasoned arguments. Most often when I make my mind up on a new issue I have weighed both sides and find myself not fully convinced either way. But like most people I need to decide one way or another and I go with the side I most agree with. This is the situation most amenable to change, because the balance is often delicate. But only if I find a reason to reopen the internal debate in my mind. Just thinking about this and writing it down has possibly made me understand a little more about myself and why I believe the things I do. 23. You are just too cool for a reserve, you don't need one. Just get a BASE rig. Then you won't need a rigger ticket either. They didn't make the older, now cheaper reserves in sizes that small. Because they would have landed like rocks. bullshit. the man needs a MicroRaven109. He'll be fine. Well, at least no worse than he already is. Sorry, except for Precision. They made tiny reserves for tiny people. But unless you are a tiny person, you will land like a rock. (But apparently you don't mind that. I assume you are tough enough, and not just uber cool.)
