Yes, the data exists. Now there is a fight for whether or not a court can demand access. Given that with a proper court order nothing else is so sacred that it can't be subpoenaed it's hard to imagine the law will allow us to refuse a legal order to our data. The DoJ will win this fight. Completely and irrevocably. For better or worse. There is no right to privacy that is absolute for anyone or anything. The only thing that will limit the damage is the procedure that will be required to issue the order. If we are lucky we may be able to avoid having LEOs go on fishing expeditions whenever they can lay their hands on a device. Hopefully there will be a fairly onerous burden of proving a need first. I don't fully understand encryption either, but that is irrelevant. The phone exists, and the data that is on it exists. Apple may or may not already have the tool that the government wants, but they are capable of making it. Apple will lose in court eventually. I can see both side in the struggle, but big brother has the big stick, and he will use it to get his way. Time Cook is being a Condescending Prick about this. (Can we just start abbreviating it as CP?) Apple is protecting it's brand, not the general public, and as large and powerful as Apple is, it will lose this battle. The courts are bigger and stronger, and they have many precedents on their side. This case is not about this phone. It's about control and precedent. As far as the disaster scenario goes, China could use the above method of sabotage. But there are also many other ways it could put malicious code into that theoretical switch. If you have a drink at lunch, and then try to jump where I jump we won't let you, unless you don't tell us. It's not because we will think you are drunk. It's because we have a zero tolerance policy. And one drink is exactly one more than zero. It does not matter if you are impaired or not, that's beside the point. The reason we have that policy is because then we do not have to make any judgement calls. If you, or anyone else, have a problem with that, it's okay. But it won't my problem, it will be yours. No not kidding. I am not going into detail on a public forum, but instructors being stoned is not a big surprise to me. Out of all the activities I have been involved in throughout my life, skydiving has had, by far, the highest involvement in drugs. There was more in the past. In the present era of commercial DZs advertising to the general public and treating tandems like carnival rides, professional DZs no longer tolerate drug use. Especially in staff. I hope you're kidding. I've seen some of that, but far from rampant. And snuffed out ASAP as soon as found out. Large professional operations like that in the US do random testing. Saying "The instructor looked like he just did a big bong rip" is crap. It's an extremely subjective thing to say, and is the lowest kind of unsubstantiated garbage. How the hell could anyone possibly get through that process without lying? Politicians are people, voters are people, people lie. Some people call it "bluffing" so they don't have to use the L word. A politician that does not lie would be incompetent. You can't handle the truth, at least not all the time.
