  3. Notice how Quade doesn't come around here any more? Hey Quade, have we become District Nine? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  4. Snow would pay a little more attention to Sigourney, especially back in her Alien 1 days. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  5. You wouldnt believe the "pranks" jumpers have pulled: 1. dumping someone elses reserve in freefall 2. swiping the keys on exit leaving a Cessna pilot engineless on a NIGHT JUMP! 3. tossing hypoxic jumpers out to "wake them up" 4. planting a pack of condoms in the back seat of a straight up family guys car. I am sure Twardo and Guru have even better examples. Don't jumpers have great senses of humor? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  6. What always amazed me is the very accurate description given by the airline pilots who spotted him. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  7. Larry Walters was a really sad case, ended up killing himself with a shot through the heart. Manny (Manuel) Real, who was later appointed as a very controversial federal judge, was the Asst. US Attorney who prosecuted Walters. Manny was a hard ass and had no sense of humor or tolerance for minor infractions. I dont think Walters ever talked directly with the FAA on CB. Do you have contrary info? It was a miracle he survived his aerial adventure and a tragedy that he later took his own life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Walters Larry had a US Forest Service connection, but let's not get carried away. He wasnt a viable Cooper suspect. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  8. 2009 was a pretty good year, only 16 sport jumpers died. That's a 40 year low! Did they miss one in 1971? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  9. I and many other skydivers spent Thanksgiving day at home, eating turkey, secretly disappointed that the FBI was ignoring us as Cooper suspects. The futility of their investigation is so clearly shown by their reaction to Guru's ad. Mayfield reminds me of Duane. Bad guy, often caught, arrested and convicted. FBI has cleared both as not Cooper. Duane had more 727 knowledge. Mayfield was a better jumper. It's really a coin toss. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 10. Jo, No US mass sport jumps were made from 727s until long after Norjack. The first I know of were in the 1990s at Quincy Illinois, at the WFFC event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyNwr_Cb--I 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  11. From hangdiver's Marana article: That has to be an error. Perhaps Douglas A 26s? There were no surviving "squadrons" of B 26s. Few survived scrapping after WW 2. Very rare plane today. Still lots of A 26s around. A 26s fought in WW 2 , Korea and Viet Nam. Bay of Pigs too. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  12. I agree but that isn't necessarily intuitive. Also one might expect that large a surface area delflected downwould cause a big pitch moment affecting controllability. If it was a no brainer then Boeing would not have done extensive tests to see if it was feasible. Don Kirlin went through a huge hassle with Boeing to get the test data so that he could get FAA approval for 727 jumps at WFFC. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 13. Sluggo, Ask the Continental 727 pilot how he knew that plane was jumpable. I have a thick Continental Airlines 727 flight manual for their version of the 727-100 series. Not one hint in the hundreds of pages that the stairs can be lowered in flight. The NWA pilots and FE didn't know it. How did this guy know? Even if I thought the stairs could be deployed I'd figure they'd be pushed up against the fuselage by airloads making egress difficult or impossible. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 14. We had an Aeronca Sedan jumpship at Livermore in the late 60s that didn't look much better. It was called The RAT. Any old timers remember Perry Steves' RAT? Made my first jump from her. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  15. Take a look at that photo of Ckret and the reserve. I wonder if you could fasten a reserve container to a non D ring equipped harness by using the pack opening bands and bringing them around behind the reserve container. They have hooks on the ends. Could you pass them through the harness webbing then connect them hook to hook? The POBs have poweful springs inside to hold tension when they are stretched. Riggers, your opinions? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  16. Cossey was right. That is not a bailout rig pilot chute. They have a big entrapped spring. Wonder what it was? Parachute flare canopy? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  17. I haven't spent half my occupational life chasing pink fish. Salmon are ORANGE. Got it? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  18. Di you know that pink in a rig or canopy reduces its resale value by a lot? Isn't that crazy? Even a pink reserve gets discounted in the used market. A reserve is like underwear, nobody's gonna see it unless things get frantic. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  19. Snow wrote: Snow is right. Do it now. Bundle up Baby O and take her to the DZ. Get her used to the intoxicating colorful chaos. It really does get harder later. Seems counterintuitive but it's a fact. I was going to wait for my kids to get older before I started travelling to distant boogies. Instead I went to WFFC for 6 years before it folded. I still took my kids on fun vacations, but 1/3 of my vacation time was used for boogies. WFFC had jet jumps, DC 3, DC 4, Carvair, Herc, CASA, Skyvan, Schweizer sailplane, AN 2, Beech 18, Helos, Balloon, B 24 and B 17 bombers, etc. Plus anachistic hedonistic chaos of the highest order. Although great boogies still remain, like Lost Praire, Couch Freaks, etc., WFFC was the tops IMHO. Also, try to find those rarer jumpships now. Almost impossible. 377 says: good times and convenient times dont run on the same schedule. Plan accordingly. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 20. JUMP THE HERC Orange, wild fun. You'll see. You mean you didnt get the jumper marriage vows? In sickness and in health, in Hercs and in Cessnas... 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  21. Duck hunters and mudflat fishermen have reported for years seeing an elusive flock of wild Flamingos in obscure sloughs around San Francisco Bay. Bird experts explained it as a combination of fog, pelicans, and hinted at intoxication. Finally someone got a photo of at least two of them. The older and much larger flock is reputed to be just barely pink. I have talked with several fishermen who saw them and said there were at least 20 birds back in the 1980s. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  22. What are the chances of getting some bigger jumpships down there Orange, something that a Flamingo will respect. If you keep flying those tin cans they will keep jaywalking right in front of you. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  23. Like I said, reasonable levels of drugs and alcohol in pilots are OK, enough to see the same Flamingos your jumpers are seeing, but not so much that you cant do a successful evasive maneuver. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  24. yeah, it is. Jumpers dont care about FAA licenses, they just want enough time in type to handle the acft in tough situations and reasonable blood alcohol and drug levels in the jumpship pilots. I didnt say ZERO. I mean that would be hypocritical, 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  25. First we have JERRY's DEATH WOODS and now MAYFIELD's DEATH DZ. Follow your "vibes" sense Amazon, it's obviously tuned to the right frequency. Pretty heavy to get homicide convictions over parachuting accidents. Facts must have been REALLY REALLY bad. I assume none of the fatalities were reserve malfunctions... A bad main pack job shouldnt turn into a fatality with a student who had decent training, even with a first jump student. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver.
